NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

@Alakazam8 my feeling is that the mid teen years are hardest. Most roles are either for 'adults' or 'kids' so there aren't a huge number available for those in the middle. Then if you add in the fact that some 12/13 yr old girls can be quite mature that puts them in with the mid-teens too. DD13 is petite and undeveloped so can still pass as 11ish. In fact she's smaller than some of DD10's peers. But some of her own Year 9 peers are proper young women!

Nothing yet, but am I correct in thinking that diesanybodyhaveamap’s dd only heard/had a workshop for stage performer, not musician yet?

(That’s a long username to type can I just call you Heidi?) :)

doesanybodyhaveamap · 08/03/2021 20:52

Heidi works 🤣 😘

And that's right, no news on musician application yet. Last year it was after stage performers...

Depends. They really try to have roles on offer for all ages and plan shows accordingly. This year Billy The Kid could scoop up a lot of mid-teens, for example, as the majority of the cast are meant to be that age. All I meant when I said it is tough for 15 year-old girls is that yes there will be parts for them, but there will also be a LOT of competition. Younger kids may not be so ready to go on residentials where they don't know anyone, but by 13/14 they are usually raring to go!

chaperonemum · 08/03/2021 21:09

@Alakazam8 we applied on 24th February. When did you apply?

Thanks all for the best wishes for Sunday.

Alakazam8 · 08/03/2021 22:11

Thanks for the info- any insight is great. We dont know anyone who has been in other years so we are coming to it with very little knowledge about it.
Dd is auditioning as a performer, not musician-I’m hoping we don’t have until next Monday to wait!

Alakazam8 · 08/03/2021 22:15

Thanks @chaperonemum. We applied on 25th, I suppose we might hear tomorrow hopefully?

chaperonemum · 09/03/2021 08:09

@Alakazam8 fingers crossed for today. We are also new to this having seen BYMT through school and then NYMT popping up.

I also guess that they would have had a flood of applications nearer the closing date.

I’ve noticed a few comments about the dance being tricky. Are all of the shows very dancy?
DS loves dance but actually really struggles with all the online classes they have at college so he’ll be slightly concerned about that. They have 3 hours on a Tuesday which he’d always emerge from buzzing but at home he really finds it a bit tricky

minimits · 09/03/2021 15:19

DS struggled because of zoom lag-it was challenging as well I think but doubly hard when the timing is out as it kept freezing. DS also HATES dance on zoom. Not helped by shocking rural broadband! Show wise I’m sure @Biscuitsneeded can give far more info but it seems to range from show to show. BYMT runs the full gamut of full on dance shows and those with just ‘movement’.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/03/2021 17:28

Quiet day today. No more news??

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 09/03/2021 17:38

Nothing here. Ds has forgotten about it at the moment and is just excited to be back at college. He’s working on his genre assignment which is to take a piece of music from one genre and turn it into another.

So the Main Theme from Avengers by Alan Silvestri is being turned into a rock guitar and synth piece!

Alakazam8 · 09/03/2021 18:01

Nothing here either- have noticed they’ve extended the deadline for choir for tenor and bass voices. Doesn’t impact dd but might affect others. Hope we hear soon- just want to know either way!

Biscuitsneeded · 09/03/2021 18:02

I don't think it's the case that the dance is really impossible. It's quite challenging, but DS, who is an OK dancer for a boy but nothing amazing, could do it all in practice; it's just harder to understand when being taught on zoom and then when it was his turn the lag meant the music glitched and it threw him. I think what's really important to remember is they just want to see them move. The steps probably aren't as important as the enthusiasm and performance! There will be dancer kids who can do it all perfectly and that may be intimidating to some others, but those are the kids they may cast in the dancer roles in the show that has quite a bit of dance. Not being amazing at dance has never prevented anyone from doing NYMT if they are right in other ways. So tell your kids not to panic if there are any hiccups, as it's just a way of finding the really great dancers for the shows that need them, I suspect! I would say that not being able to act or not being able to sing would be a bigger problem and they have no problems working with inexperienced dancers as long as they will give it a go.

Alakazam8 · 09/03/2021 18:22

Great info biscuits- thank you. That is so reassuring for dc who have zoom workshops to come.

chaperonemum · 09/03/2021 19:01

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded that's really useful. My DD is more singer/actor. She can dance but I think it will be the bit she is the least confident with.

Triflefan · 10/03/2021 09:12

@minimits
That’s exactly how DS is! I’m sure they’ll take all of that into consideration now I’ve read both yours and @Biscuitsneeded posts.

I so want their lives to be back to normal.
Just sat in the car in the pouring rain at college now waiting for him to be tested.
Roll on Monday!

Alakazam8 · 10/03/2021 10:15

Totally agree @Triflefan. This opportunity seems to be another piece of normality for them.
It does make it harder to wait for the audition results (for me) as there isn’t much else going on at the moment. Been wondering, if I’ve made a mistake with sending the links to the videos, as it’s the first time I’ve used the method I used, would they let me know or would it rule dd’s application out?
I probably need to just forget about it at least until next Monday!
However I can see how much dd will get out of it, especially after how positive people are on here, so am really keeping my fingers crossed.
Is there anyone else still waiting for the result of a performers audition?

Notaclue08 · 10/03/2021 10:49

Hi. My DD has the audition workshop this Saturday. Can anyone advise what to expect? Also, do most applicants get through to this stage? Thanks

doesanybodyhaveamap · 10/03/2021 11:18

hello @Notaclue08, welcome and well done to DD on getting through to workshop! this is the first time NYMT have done it this way so we are not sure how many applicants get through but certainly some on here have sadly not been offered a workshop so they are being selective at the first stage.

NYMT are super welcoming and friendly, and very professional. You will receive an email on Friday evening with some scripts to look at but not memorise. DD will be in a group of 20 on the day. They will either do dance or acting first. In acting they will basically take turns to play out from the scripts, maybe work on little sections. Some will only read once, some more than once but try not to read too much into that.

The dance part of the audition is in 2 parts - one quite challenging and one that is more more straightforward and more movement based.

Hope she enjoys!!

Notaclue08 · 10/03/2021 11:33

Thank you so much for the info, it’s really helpful. Do you think I should let them know ahead that she has an injury -fell of her skateboard last week and ended up at hospital. No broken bones just some ligament damage. She was given crutches but has not used them this week and is insisting it is all fine but she has a massive bruise on foot, ankle and leg.

Comefromaway · 10/03/2021 11:34

Yes, I would let them know of an injury as it may impact on her ability to take part in the dance.

chuffedtolittlemintballs · 10/03/2021 11:49

Hi everyone. My DS (12) had his audition for NYMT on the first weekend of workshops. It was his first time trying out for NYMT. He really enjoyed the workshop and came out happy but not hopeful to proceed to the next round - I think that was mainly due to finding some of the dance workshop challenging and being a bit more reserved than he would be in a face to face workshop. I was just really proud of him for doing his best and keeping going - the age range in his workshop went from 10/11 to early 20s, which is probably representative of the age range of some of the companies NYMT puts together, and so the dance needs to be challenging for all of them, I guess. Similar to what @doesanybodyhaveamap says, he found one part of the dance workshop more challenging that the other, so it sounds like there was a balance.

I think it might be another couple of weeks at least until we hear something, so I hope you don't mind me joining you in the waiting room!

Notaclue08 · 10/03/2021 13:43

Thanks once again.

DalekFan · 10/03/2021 13:55

@Alakazam8 can you tell if your videos have been viewed? You could always email them and check all ok. I’m sure they would not mind if you explain it’s your first time using upload method etc.
