NYMT Auditions - suggestions please

Daughter has decided rather late in the process to try out for NYMT. We have just realised that in addition to two songs she needs to perform a piece or poem and we have no clue as to what would be suitable – length etc. Does anyone have any suggestions what might be suitable even better if you have specifically had dealings with NYMT auditions before. She is 15 if that is any help in terms of something age-appropriate. Thank you very much.

Hi there! It needs to be around 2 min, so not very long. And age appropriate. Something she can connect with. And in her natural accent. Does she have a drama or English teacher at school that could help you find something suitable? Anything she's done in the past? There are lots of books and websites out there with monologues and poems on- it just takes a bit of effort to sift through and find something they 'click' with and ideally isn't done all the time...

I would suggest the poem Blenkinsopp by Gareth Owen it will be quicker for her to learn than a monologue & the comedy will come through online. It’s a conversation between headteacher and child.

If she is thinking more auditions thus book of contemporary monologues for teenage girls has been DD's go too for a few girls.

Beachcomber74 only issue is it must be done in her natural voice which is difficult if you are trying to show a conversation? I may see if I can clarify this with them.

Loneecatwithkitten thank you will have a look.

This has made me realise how few plays either of us really know which are suitable.

Only seeing this now - I hope you found something. NYMT are very welcoming and don't want to make life difficult - they are also excellent at spotting potential. Whatever your DD chose I am sure it will be acceptable, as long as she was happy with it. My DS is 15, nearly 16, and has done NYMT several times and it is just the best organisation for young people who want to perform. Fingers crossed your DD will get some news soon.

They’ve just added another month for auditions which might mean the uptake is lower than expected? I wonder if it’s cos people aren’t sure if it will go ahead, or in what format? Bit frustrating as we rushed to get the tape off before the first deadline. Hopefully they will spot potential?!
