Classical guitar - where do I start?

DS aged 16 wants to quit guitar because he doesn't enjoy pop, rock, blues jazz... He's reached Rockschool grade 7 (Merit), also piano grade 8 (Distinction) and viola grade 5 (Distinction). We're looking into the type of classical music he can play with a guitar e.g. SL Weiss, but he doesn't have an instrument (he only had electric guitars). What sort of guitar should I be looking for to being with? Will probably hire initially.

I love classical guitar, takes a lot of practice ( for me anyway) . Hard to sight read as notes can be played in so many positions but if he is already good with chords that will help. It would be good to get a teacher to help with hand position, finger techniques etc as it is quite different. A nylon string guitar is what you need, can you try some at a shop? As with other string instruments, a string upgrade is a cheap way of improving sound initially. Not bought one for years but £100 would easily get something ok to start with I would have thought.

a good start is a good teacher.

he probably already has good technique but might need some adjustment for classical.

do you have a guitar shop nearby? go there, try some intruments. do not shy away from second hand. ask for teacher & instrument recommendation.
