Spring Term 2020 music thread

Thought I would start the ball rolling on the first 2020 music thread since I’m awake. Happy New Year all of you and your lovely little musicians. Carrying on the long tradition of music threads here begun moons ago by wafflenose .... hoping our threads continue to be a place that’s welcoming to all, whatever standard, experience, backgrounds or situations of music bring you here.

2019 brought incredible music experiences for us, our biggest year to date. Exhausting but incredible. We said goodbye to the year with a final music lesson to end what has been an amazing first year on a new, and now first study, instrument. We’ve had a year free from practical exams but full of auditions and performances and so much to look back on with gratitude. I certainly couldn’t have predicted 2019 this time last year! I hope we can say the same of 2020 this time next year. Happy New Year xx

Hi @bostik I don't think piano is mandatory even at Jr. I have two children at Primary Academy. There are many children who don't play piano at PA but all children are expected to audition Junior.

The RAM primary head said that second instrument is only used as a second chance for the audition if the first instrument was not enough good.

Neither of my children played piano at audition but they got in.

bostik · 20/07/2020 09:26

Thanks @wineandmusic that's really helpful!

I have some students taking ABRSM exams at the beginning of August and it feels so good to be getting a little not back towards normal.
The change to seeing them for face to face lessons has been interesting, normally I accompany them a lot in lessons and they need practice at doing this again, even though they have used backing tracks at home.
Most of the kids I've taught online in recent weeks have made better progress than usual!

Hello - has anyone uploaded a video exam entry to Trinity? Just wondering how long before the first stage of results came back. It's been 2 weeks since we uploaded and usually Trinity are quite fast, but I understand everything is different at the moment.
So pleased that Trinity made this option available. Was hoping that ABRSM would be opening up digital assessment with 4 pieces for those children doing lower grades by now.

QueenMabby · 05/08/2020 15:25

Hope you hear soon dinosaur. We’re waiting on direction for the ABRSM online performance exam although dd will wait to do it once she’s back at school as their pianos are much nicer apparently 🙄
Dd did get to have her first in person music lesson for nearly 5 months this week - a piano lesson at her teacher’s house. She was so excited and loved every minute of it. Although online lessons have worked well there’s just no substitute for in person tuition.

Trinity College Exam - help needed!
I have of course left it right to the last minute to upload my son's Trinity College exam entry, only to find we can't log in! I have only had one email from them when we initially registered and nothing since. Has anyone done this who can help with what information we should have and how to do this?

violinmama · 13/08/2020 20:10

Gladio - I think you are missing an email. The same happened to us. I FB messaged Trinity with the order ref from the confirmation email and they sent my user name and a temporary password a few hours later. Hope you get sorted soon.

Mendingfences · 14/08/2020 07:17

The new school year starts here on monday and music lessons will be starting next week and the week after so we are back to the classic timetabling issues 😱 i think i need to send some messages today and try and get some more workable timeings......

QueenMabby · 14/08/2020 20:04

Good luck mendingfences! Dd does her two instruments at school and we always have a nightmare scheduling in her lessons too - she’s picking up singing from September to add to her piano and cello and I’m dreading the lesson negotiations!

Bindle2014 · 14/08/2020 23:03

Gladio Lots of people are missing their log ins it seems. If you have been added to the system and the email has gone astray you can go to the portal and enter your email address and request a reminder. If it says you're not on the system you will have 7 days from when your password arrives regardless of when that is. I've had the same trouble! Good luck Smile

Bindle2014 · 14/08/2020 23:16

Dinosaur, Youur trinity results might be there!! they are not sending emails until the final grade has been put through their algorithm but they are releasing initial marks in 1-14 days as a mark out of 66.

They aren't easy to find though:

Go to the portal and log in
Click on courses
Go to the bottom and click where you uploaded (as if you're uploading again).
Your uploads should be there and it will either say 'not graded' or you'll see a mark sheet at the bottom.
The mark is just the mark for the pieces though and they add or remove a few marks depending on geographical and historical data (!!!) It's the same system as us causing drama with A-Levels. But the preliminary mark out of 66 gives you a reasonable idea.
Hope that helps Smile

dinosaurinmybelly · 17/08/2020 13:26

Thank you Bindle2014. I've found it now. Happy musician here.
Hope the term gets off to a good start for everyone.

Jenniraffe · 17/08/2020 13:41

Thank you @Bindle2014 - we have received our login and will try to send the video now!

Gosh are we still in spring? Still waiting on Trinity digital marks here. DD has forgotten about it but I keep checking! Guess they must be very busy. I'm so used to them turning up lesson after exam, not used to an uncertain ETA!

OneLovelySister · 18/08/2020 14:04

Gosh are we still in spring?

How about we go straight to spring 2021 and forget 2020 ever happened? Smile

thirdfiddle · 18/08/2020 15:48

Sounds like a plan all round.

Bindle2014 · 18/08/2020 21:37

Haha I like that plan!

I decided to be optimistic that something might happen in autumn: new thread here:

Mickey33 · 04/09/2020 14:45

Hi wineandmusic
I have notice you have two children who attend primary academy. My daughter has got into primary this year. I was wondering if you have received an email from them regarding news letter, timetable and fees. We had an email a few weeks ago to say we would receive further info at the beginning of September. I haven’t received anything and I was wondering if you have. I don’t want to bother them as I know they are probably very busy but just really wanting to know what’s happening with timetables and fees
Thanks

DS just starting at Trinity Laban this week on his trumpet course!
Having a blast so far!
Attended a Freshers event on Saturday night - Jazz on the lawn - outside the college and up the hill to the Observatory to take in the view and watch the sun come up with his new friends!
Impressed he could get up that early after the night before!

thirdfiddle · 08/09/2020 18:16

That sounds brilliant juggling, so glad they're finding ways to make the new students feel welcome. It's a strange time to start anything. Autumn thread that way^, keep us posted how he gets on!
