DS auditioned a couple of weeks ago for RCS juniors with piano as his principal instrument (Grade 7) and french horn as his subsidiary (Grade 4). I think he thinks it went well but was just wondering as obviously piano is a very competitive first study what his chances of getting in would be and if having French horn would help towards whether he gets in or not/ maybe give him an edge on people who only auditioned on piano. Thank you.

I will be interested in the answer to this too. DD auditioned there this week too for piano/oboe. Can’t believe we have to wait until May to find out !

It’s awful isn’t it! DS’s audition was on the 13th so a long waiting period for us but I would say I’m more nervous than him! Both of his cousins went to RNCM before they went to uni and they loved it which convinced DS to sign up. Now we’re just waiting and wondering what his chances are as they never gave a number of how many people they take each year.....

It’s hell, I agree!and if they don’t get in you don’t even get feedback which for a £40 audition fee I think is a bit of a cheek!

Coco, if you are close enough to RCS, there is a double reed lunchtime concert next week, we went last year and it was fab but DD has missed lots of school recently so don't feel I can take her this time. Her teacher is playing in it ( he is actually a professional bassoonist) and coaching the ensemble.

Thanks Horseymum! Just back from hols and dd is straight into studying for exams next week (she has early easter hols) so won’t be able to go. I’m trying to keep her mind off music at the mo and tied to her desk (!) as she is stressing due to wait for RCS juniors audition result and her grade 6 singing result - 4 weeks in and still waiting on the mark 🙄😡

horseymum · 10/04/2019 17:16

Hope you get the results soon!

She got into RCS juniors- got the e mail this afternoon. Lots of tears when I told her 😄

One down, one to go 😜

How exciting! I just saw the other thread! I think the oboe teaching is good there, DDs teacher said it might be on the horizon in years to come, not sure if we could manage the commitment. DD would love to be around other oboe players though as she had never met another child who plays, no-one in our council area plays!

cocopops · 11/04/2019 21:07

She is still on cloud 9- that acceptance form was submitted quicker than you could say bob’s your uncle!

Her current oboe teacher studied at RCS under Stephen West and he is meant to be brill so fingers crossed she gets him! It’s a good one to do as it’s not too popular an instrument. There are about 6 at DD’s school who play- a couple will leave school this year, freeing up more space for the orchestra and bands and that’s why she chose it really- for ensemble work - piano is so solitary!

Now worrying about extra insurance for the weekly commute on the train with her oboe 😜
