December Music Thread

Hi all, sorry it's late. I didn't get a moment yesterday.

Please feel free to jump right into December's discussion. We talk about music lessons, practice, exams, concerts, auditions, repertoire, instrument hire/ purchase, reeds, strings and more. There is no minimum or maximum age or standard. Beginners are always welcome.

Our thoughts are with one of our members, Tabby, at this sad and difficult time for our family. Her situation has reminded me of all the things that are really important in life - mainly our loved ones - and that while music is something which can enhance all of our lives, I shouldn't waste time stressing over small stuff like exam results.

I am mum to Goo (13) and Rara (10).

Mistigri that’s awful for your dd glad the counselling helped . We need to keep a close eye on dd she’s struggled for years with low level bullying at school - just because she’s uncompromisingly herself - which I applaud . I’m just hoping her peers at high school are more accepting of her . At the minute I think she wants to do well in these silly tests for herself , but if she does well her peers will be awful to her ( for always getting things right ) and the same if she gets wound up and can’t do it Sad

Wafflenose · 07/12/2018 10:34

Misti yes but it's hard to get any. I got put on a course for something else over the summer, and am now on another one for this, but need to talk to someone about what actually happened.

Do you mean you're getting counselling for what's going on with Goo, Waffle?
Does school have anyone she can talk to? It sounds like you could both do with support.
The teen years are undeniably hard, but if what you consider " lazy" and " energy conserving" is actually anxiety, that needs to be dealt with quickly and sensitively before it spirals into something much worse - in my ( admittedly limited experience), the teen years only get harder at 14 and 15.

Wafflenose · 07/12/2018 10:44

Gosh no - I was on a course for another MH issue, and the talk of counselling is for my social issues.

Waffle Flowers it’s all so hard . Hope you are feeling better.

Mistigri · 07/12/2018 10:56

Waffle, we paid for a few counselling sessions, but I appreciate that's much easier here than in the UK. I think what piccolo said below is very pertinent, anxious people are often demand-avoiders.

Trumpetboysmum, thank you. She's a student now and her course is full of "people like her" (she is also quite unconventional and opinionated). I don't think anxiety ever leaves you completely but she is managing it much better. She's even managing to be not too hung up about marks!

Trumpetboysmum · 07/12/2018 11:14

Yes Dd also needs to find people like her . She has a couple of great friends - would have moved schools ages ago if it wasn’t for them . Unfortunately they are unlikely to go to high school with her - but I think where she’s going will be a good fit I’m also hoping that those girls who have made her life very difficult since they were about 4 !?! won’t be going to high school with her either

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/12/2018 11:37

Waffle and Trumpetsdd Thanks hope things get easier soon.

Trumpetboysmum · 07/12/2018 12:02

Thank you Loose I really do feel for her , but try to just give her lots of positive vibes and tactics for dealing with the children in her class when they are being unkind / downright nasty !!

Wafflenose · 07/12/2018 13:42

Public Service Announcement.

Due to some inconsistencies, Tabby/Pancake has been removed from Mumsnet. Thank you to the people who alerted me to the situation, and to MNHQ for their hard work behind the scenes. None of us would wish anyone ill, so I do hope they are OK and receiving any support that they need.

I will not be entering into any personal correspondence about this, and would like to keep the thread on track.

I had noticed something, but just thought it was me.

Wafflenose · 07/12/2018 14:46

I am thinking of starting a fresh thread. I feel a bit disgusted.

OP posts:
Doubleup · 07/12/2018 14:50

Might be an idea Waffle. Too much of the early part of the thread devoted in that direction.

folkmamma · 07/12/2018 14:51

Go for it Waffle xx

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/12/2018 15:06

Wait....what??
So, were Tabby/Penguin one and the same? Was there any truth in any of their posts?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/12/2018 15:48

Changing the subject completely...
DS has the biggest concert of the school year tonight, playing in multiple orcestras and ensembles, and has just called to say his cello has been damaged by being shoved in the hold of the coach taking him to the concert hall - the finger board has come off. 😱

Doubleup · 07/12/2018 15:51

My worst nightmare Piccolo! Any way of getting one to borrow?

CruCru · 07/12/2018 15:54

God, what an arse. Yes, is there one he can borrow?

Presumably this is something that can be fixed at a music shop?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/12/2018 15:55

We're having to make a mercy dash to school to grab his cello and him, and then dashing across the city to the string specialist shop that sold it to us - they're going to lend him one for tonight and fix his.
My stress levels are through the roof - I'm wondering what other damage there might be, and why his incredibly expensive case didn't prevent it.

Lotsofmilkonesugar · 07/12/2018 16:04

Oh no piccolo what a nightmare! And I thought it was just woodwind instruments that break easily ! Hope you get the spare instrument in time 🤞

Trumpetboysmum · 07/12/2018 16:18

Oh no piccolo hope it gets fixed . What a nightmare !!

Waffle I think we should all just carry on regardless but yes a new thread might be an idea - very weird but their problem not ours ( though I admit it does make you feel a bit strange)
I did think that even by our standards pancake had super busy dcs though !! Wink

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/12/2018 16:25

Oh no Piccolo - that's a nightmare! Good luck, I'm sure it'll be ok but I can feel the stress just from reading your posts!

Wafflenose · 07/12/2018 16:56

Oh no, Piccolo. That's awful. Can you claim it on the insurance?

New thread here... I have gone right off this one.
