December Music Thread

Have a new thread for December!

This is an ongoing chat group for musicians, parents of musicians and anyone interested in music. We talk about practice, scales, theory, instrument hire and purchase, concerts, exams, auditions and loads more. Newcomers and beginners are extra specially welcome - yes, a lot of us now have children who are getting quite advanced, but we all had beginners once. I started the conversation when my eldest was 6 and working towards Grade 1, and we now have learners of all ages and standards on here.

I am a teacher of woodwind, and have two daughters. Goo is 12 and in Year 7. She loves her new school, and has grown up fast since she started. The first few weeks were overwhelming and confusing. She loved the challenge of new subjects, new faces, lots of different sports, etc. Unfortunately, she is a poster child for complacency, is now finding it all very easy, and doing the bare minimum again, sigh. She extends this approach to music too, putting in a bit of effort at the last minute, and often making an eleventh hour bid to change piece for important performances. She is gregarious, intense and obsessed with her phone. Oops, I forgot to say, she plays the flute and piano. Grade 8 flute is pencilled in for some time next year (teacher is campaigning to wait until train tracks come off) and she hasn't performed on the piano or taken any exams yet.

Rara is 9, and a completely different kettle of fish. She likes music, but she likes reading, art and making things even more. She's talkative, eccentric and highly creative. I have no idea how her mind works. She is in Year 5 at the village primary, and couldn't really care less about academics. She plays the cello (working at an early Grade 4 level) and clarinet. Some of her clarinet pieces are Grade 4, but she is having some technical problems at the moment, mainly due to her size and incorrect placement of her fingers. So the next exam she does will probably be Grade 3.

Both girls are members of South West Music School (Rara starting next month) and both auditioned for the NCO. Goo was very pleased with herself, but Rara had an absolute disaster. She bounced back within a day though.

I can't possibly name all the things he's playing for fun. He loves messing around with his violin (and piano) with any tunes he fancies! Yesterday we went to watch Star Wars so of course he was playing Star Wars today. Grin I hope we can call it 'practice' but I now know we can't (his teacher would strongly disagree). Ha ha. He is supposed to polish up his Bach concerto during the holiday but he gets tired just after 10 mins whereas he could keep going for fun pieces. I think it's something to do with concentration.

Theory, piano, cheerful flute (finally!) and grumpy clarinet all done (someone's tired) so I'll consider that a win. I hope Christmas is lovely all round, and that you all get what you are hoping for!

I can't wait for DS2 to be ready for the Bach E major/A minor, but not for a little while yet! Too subtle.

DS1 & 2 (and DH!) loved Star Wars. A bit too 'plotty' for me though. I couldn't follow who was a goody/baddy in all the battles. Have a great Christmas all!

Don't even think about starting any Star Wars talk with me as I fear my obsession may turn this thread into a Star Wars thread (until I get kicked out)! Grin

DS admires Bach and loves the concerto but says it's tiring - no rest from the first note to the end! But DS has unbelievable level of stamina (since he was a baby, seriously) so it's not because of the physical demand that tires him but focus that requires to play the piece.

Can't believe Christmas is coming finally! Can't wait to open my presents see DS's face when he opens up his presents! Have a merry Christmas, everyone!

Waiting for dc to go to bed. Dc1 (17y) doesn't quite see the point of it as he knows it's not Santa.....

No music practice here, just chilling out, in bed mainly, and watching Star Wars. Well some Christmas songs were heard.
Will have to start soon after New year, as have grade 4 and a grade 5 next term.

Goo has convinced herself she won't sleep at all tonight. I said I don't care, she had to be lying down in the dark by 10, and isn't allowed to bother us until 7.

I have just delivered stocking presents. DH thought Rara didn't believe any more, and I thought she did. However, she hasn't mentioned Father Christmas ONCE, e.g. where he might be, how he does it, shall we leave mince pies out etc. I think she's been stringing us all along! If she raises the subject as of tomorrow, we will tell her. Goo asked for the truth when she was 8.

Will start a new year thread in due course, naturally. I now think we might have a Grade 3 and Grade 5 exam next term, and a Grade 3 and Grade 8 in the summer. Then that's probably it for Goo... we'll see.

One very cool (normally) teenager leapt out of his room when I came down this morning wearing a big smile and a festive jumper! And I got a hug from his little brother! The magic of Christmas!

Hello, have been loving the stories about boot camps and festive jumpers. We're having a strange holiday, we dined with my family through Skype this year. We all have tons of work and DS is just revising for gcses and practising. He's off to give his occasional student a drums lesson now.
Great news from woolley and amazing rate of success from waffle Star
DS realised that Santa couldn't be everywhere at the same night when he was 5 and I had to make him swear he wouldn't tell any of his friends at school!
Some interesting reading... www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/26/piano-exam-test?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Interesting article drummer and having taken an exam last year for the first time last year, I recognise his sentiments!!

mending glad the bass went down well 😊

I'm not sure if DD1 is still buying the Santa thing.. she makes all the right noises and shrieked with delight when the ridiculous pyjama request was duly fulfilled yesterday morning. She hasn't asked, but I suspect that's because she doesn't want to know!

Off to the theatre tonight to watch Noo's 7.30pm show. Haven't seen it from Front of House since the beginning of the run in mid-November, so super excited!

Drummers I read the article with interest - I can certainly relate to the nerves although very glad the author has gone back to playing despite the exam meltdown!
DS1 got a chunk of art coursework done today. That’s the writing done, just a few more drawings to go.
Have a great time tonight folkmamma!

Two musical instruments for Christmas this year. Ds got a 3/4 violin. he wouldn't have got that as I don't think he'll continue much longer, but a friend offered it to me.
And dd2 got a (not very good) piccolo trumpet that she's had a wonderful time terrorising her siblings with, and the promise of buying a new trumpet which she needs (thanks Trumpetboy for the recommendation-she likes the look of it).

Nice and noisy then witchend !! No new instruments here but new musical accessories for ds and new speakers for both of them - so not exactly quiet . I think ds will get a flugelhorn next - I love the sound so that's ok with me . Off to the sales today with no dcs - a rare moment of time without at least one of them !!

The flugelhorn is lovely trumpet (I may be slightly biased, mine was a Christmas present 2 years agoSmile) such a gorgeous sound.

Hello all and a belated happy Christmas! Nothing about ours went to plan (not even to version 7 of the plans we planned) and most of it was spent around my uncle who ended up in hospital plus other dramas. There were still hilarious and special moments, our family doesn't let hospital stop us- we took the party to him. We were very glad to come home yesterday morning though.
Christmas this year was quite dance-based, with tickets for experiences (including her taster day with the Royal Ballet School JAs, she was VERY excited). Her only musical gifts this year were a new harmonica for her (and the friends who bought it also gave me ear muffs!) plus a clarinet book. She was delighted though.

Mending - hope hte double bass is going down well, it is so much fin to play! Have a look at David Hayes and his company Recital music - he composes loads of music for bass (an other instruments) I like him on facebook and get my feed filled with lovely double bass things!
Our musical Christmas has included handbells (belonging to DH's family) which sound lovely even when played badly - my mum was impressed that my dad could even follow it and she considers him fairly unmusical (even though he went to a choir school as a boy!)

The bass is being 'played ' to all our visitors most of whom are rather goggled eyed at the size of it Grin.

Mending I loved the idea of you smuggling the bass into the house! Minimusician hope your uncle is much better now.
No practice here for the last couple of days apart from me. However DS2 has been playing the piano as he goes past it!

drummersmum · 28/12/2017 19:13

Just a quick one to say I love the flugelhorn. And a warning that double bass can get stuck down a chimney.

Grin yeah that could have been tricky- we stuck to using the front door Wink

Hope you have all had a lovely Christmas. Still no music happening here, 8 days til first school entrance exam and counting!

I have a festival question, we have to enter now for our local one in May, so bassoon, having just passed grade 1, dd will do the grade 2 class.

For clarinet it is less certain, having just passed grade 4, should she do grade 4 class or grade 5 class, or go for her preference which is to do the recital class (grades 3&4) or try and persuade her to do the latter plus one of the grade classes?

Report
Wafflenose · 28/12/2017 22:58

Recital plus grade 4 class.

Our festival classes are mainly titled "for those with x grade", so would be the G4 clarinet class and the g1 bassoon. there's a few "up to x grade".
