December Music Thread

Have a new thread for December!

This is an ongoing chat group for musicians, parents of musicians and anyone interested in music. We talk about practice, scales, theory, instrument hire and purchase, concerts, exams, auditions and loads more. Newcomers and beginners are extra specially welcome - yes, a lot of us now have children who are getting quite advanced, but we all had beginners once. I started the conversation when my eldest was 6 and working towards Grade 1, and we now have learners of all ages and standards on here.

I am a teacher of woodwind, and have two daughters. Goo is 12 and in Year 7. She loves her new school, and has grown up fast since she started. The first few weeks were overwhelming and confusing. She loved the challenge of new subjects, new faces, lots of different sports, etc. Unfortunately, she is a poster child for complacency, is now finding it all very easy, and doing the bare minimum again, sigh. She extends this approach to music too, putting in a bit of effort at the last minute, and often making an eleventh hour bid to change piece for important performances. She is gregarious, intense and obsessed with her phone. Oops, I forgot to say, she plays the flute and piano. Grade 8 flute is pencilled in for some time next year (teacher is campaigning to wait until train tracks come off) and she hasn't performed on the piano or taken any exams yet.

Rara is 9, and a completely different kettle of fish. She likes music, but she likes reading, art and making things even more. She's talkative, eccentric and highly creative. I have no idea how her mind works. She is in Year 5 at the village primary, and couldn't really care less about academics. She plays the cello (working at an early Grade 4 level) and clarinet. Some of her clarinet pieces are Grade 4, but she is having some technical problems at the moment, mainly due to her size and incorrect placement of her fingers. So the next exam she does will probably be Grade 3.

Both girls are members of South West Music School (Rara starting next month) and both auditioned for the NCO. Goo was very pleased with herself, but Rara had an absolute disaster. She bounced back within a day though.

Hello to Wahffle from Kuhtik

Do they work?

Mendingfences · 21/12/2017 06:12

Practice in out house happens daily but the quality varies. For ds (7) Dh is in charge of managing drum practice, he's the one who sits in om drum lessons and i supervise piano (grandad sits in on lessons there and reports back). For dd2 (9) i supervise flute practise bit she goes to lessons by herself so it's more about making sure practice happens. She is errrm difficult to steer but has a wonderful teacher who embraces the quirkyness. She's very reliable about practising her pieces, loves improvisation and tollerates scales. No idea who is going to end up handling double bass practise! For dd1 (11) i sit in on lessons which are now 2 hours every other week and supervise practise otherwise madam would just ignore the bits she doesnt like.. .. piano is a second study and she goes to lessons and practices independently.

So i guess in out house there is no standard for practise management.....

Minimusiciansmama · 21/12/2017 07:03

Performance five of the week for my monkey today with her school choir. I think it's the final performance of the year. I've lost count how many performances she's done this month. On the home straight now though.... two more days and she's done.

folkmamma · 21/12/2017 08:08

Cello advice please!!

DD2 has a new 1/4 size Prima200 cello. It's been properly set up by our awesome luthier, but the C String is still quite woolly and difficult to get true sound from for DD (I can get a decent sound by 'digging in' but it's hard to get a nice quiet sound). I'd hoped it would get better as strings played in, but it doesn't seem to be changing.

I noticed this on her previous cello and also on a couple of other we have tried. Is this a small cello problem generally, or can something be done to improve it??

stringchild · 21/12/2017 08:55

Folk -it can be that the string is set too high (physically not tuning rise!) and you need it adjusting (maybe the bridge too). Easy to go but not a diy job I think

folkmamma · 21/12/2017 09:03

Brilliant, thanks string I will go back to the luthier Smile

GI76 · 21/12/2017 10:10

Emerence welcome! I have no advice for four playing children, but I'm muddling through the year with three children playing various musical instruments.

On a perfect school day at home i'll have before school:
DS1 (14, Grade 8 to be taken in March-July) playing his horn for a short time-20-30 min max.
DS2 (10, piano to take G6 July; cello no grades; horn ~G5) play cello
DS3 (7, violin and piano) play his violin
I supervise and help practice the two younger ones. After school: DS2 and DS3 play piano. But this is on a perfect day! Before school practice always happens, but not always after school :(.
Bootcamp will be coming here from tomorrow as well as they finish school today...Last concert for DS2 at school assembly on his horn.

folk best get the cello checked again. My DS2 has a 1/2 size cello and no problems with the C string.

Xennialish · 21/12/2017 10:36

Just asked dd who has played sizes 1/4-3/4 herself and liked to play her sister’s 1/8 for comedy value and she says C string should be no particular problem. I love our string man too, he is so reasonable I wonder sometimes if there’s other stuff around the house he could fix for me!

Kutik73 · 21/12/2017 11:08

School holiday started finally but DS's having a pretty dark day today....

He woke up with runny nose (still...) only to discover someone viciously attacked and destroyed his lego masterpieces (DH accidentally knocked them off last night...). Oscar winning dramatic acting followed as if someone died, and massive reproductive work was undertaken. Then his horrible mum announced we would do 11+ boot camp today which he took okay (expected resistance). But what he doesn't know yet is that his mum also booked a haircut for him (shock horror) as well as is going to make him help mum Christmas shopping (even more shocking!) after the boot camp...

Music practice would be his only oasis today! Happy holiday day 1...

folkmamma · 21/12/2017 11:31

Oh dear Kutik, sounds traumatic!! 😆

Wafflenose · 21/12/2017 13:28

Theory with Rara... oh dear! 3 pages done, but oh the whining, delaying tactics and ability to make something quite easy seem REALLY hard! She has helped me wrap up Goo's presents and is doing clarinet shortly. Goo has done sod all, but will be finding out there are no treats or videos until she has practised. Ho hum.

Kutik73 · 21/12/2017 14:49

Today's 11+ boot camp completed (sort of...)! Now off to DS's nightmare - haircut!

TaggieOHara · 21/12/2017 16:09

Oh dear - sympathies to all those doing 11+/theory. 11+ prep is a special sort of soul destroying, especially the reading comprehension.

Someone should market a repeating tape.... 'Does it have a verb? Well, in that case, it isn't a full sentence!' Save a fortune in tutor/school fees.

Trumpetboysmum · 21/12/2017 16:39

Ds went to a sleepover last night so he has currently passed out on the sofa - don't think I'll mention music theory today but dd did learn one of her grade 1 cornet scales and pieces this morning ( the teacher said if she could play all three by the end of the holiday she could take the exam - she was given them on Monday !?!) it seems to have inspired her

woolleybear · 21/12/2017 16:59

Results are in and the clarinet grade 4 that we feared would be a fail is a pass with 106, dd is going to be so chuffed when she gets home!

No music boot camp here this holidays, school exams in 2 ish weeks and then we will get back into oractice with a vengeanc, no more exams for as long as possible!

Icouldbeknitting · 21/12/2017 17:05

Congratulations woolleybear, that's nicely out of the way for Christmas.

DS has a performance at college tonight. I have been asked not to go in case it's a train wreck. I'm not sure I fancy sitting in the car in the dark for an hour, I might just have to find a pub to sit in.

Greenleave · 21/12/2017 17:19

My sympathy to all sickie here, hope everyone is recovering fast for Christmas(and I was very impressed with the Boys being very calm and matured).

Taggie, so is it supposed to have a verb in the answer? We dont speak to each other in English almost ever. I work in a light quant area so my terrible English has been slightly forgiven. I cant teach her a word in English though.
Hope the hair cut goes ok for miniKutik!

And sympathy for everyone who has to do revision this Christmas. We do also have to start too.

Trumpetboysmum · 21/12/2017 17:28

Fantastic news Wolley
I would definitely find a pub to sit in Icould

Nigglenotes · 21/12/2017 17:48

Spooky. I am currently sitting in the car in the dark in a market town square, waiting for DD to come back from county string ensemble...

Nigglenotes · 21/12/2017 17:52

Well done to Woolley's mini.

Wafflenose · 21/12/2017 17:55

Taggie I think your boat has finally come in! Market your revision guide, QUICK!

Wonderful news, Woolley! Many congratulations to her.

Done so far today: theory, clarinet, piano, wrapping Goo's presents, sorting out cock-ups with Riverford (my fault) and dentist (their fault), invoicing. Still to do: change girls' beds, clean out one of the gerbils, flute, cello.

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/12/2017 18:02

Very well done to MiniWoolley!CakeStar my sympathy to anyone trying to get children to study over Christmas whether music related or school revision.
ICouldBe it's no fun hanging around outside in the car - definitely find a nice warm pub. I'm sure the performance will be fine.
DS1 was too ill to go and see Star Wars today. I'm afraid we went without him but he didn't care. I really hope he feels a bit better by the weekend.

Kutik73 · 21/12/2017 18:20

Mission completed (haircut and shopping..). Exhausted already...

The schools we applied for sent us their past papers so we tried them today. Again DS aced with maths, but the comprehension was a real killer. Even I struggled as the questions were so indirect! I need a tutor for myself... Luckily for DS, our 11+ boot camp was a short lived affair as we'll be busy having visitors or visiting from tomorrow. We should have some more days for coming back to the boot camp before the new year though!

Trumpet, your DD is very impressive!
woolley, what's a start!
Green, I share your agony about being useless for helping English...
Waffle, you just reminded me that I was supposed to change bedding today.
Loose, Flowers to your poorly DS. We are going to see Star Wars this Saturday. Can't wait!!

Trumpetboysmum · 21/12/2017 19:19

Star Wars was great - Ds had seen it twice already ( he's slightly obsessed by it)
Loose I hope your ds feels better soon Flowers
I was quite impressed mpressed by dd's determination today kutik - I've never thought that she wouldn't be able to play but she always compares herself to her brother so it's hard . I think she was suitably impressed with herself so hopefully the positive attitude will continue

Japanese · 21/12/2017 20:02

Well done Woolley's DD!

And for everyone with concerts still on - am very impressed with anyone who still has the energy to perform at this time of year. I am exhausted and feel like hibernating.

Day 3 of our Day 5 bootcamp here today - 1 hour of practice each and a theory paper. As usual DD just gets on with it and DS practically needs a cheerleading squad around him to get him through it. I am slowly realising though how much better he responds to positive reinforcement so I am trying (very hard!) not to get tetchy.

We also had a trip out today to see Father Christmas at Bletchley Park which was fun and a nice change of pace. DP is taking them to see Star Wars tomorrow whilst I wrap their presents and finish off a few bits and pieces for work. Am trying this week to be booze-free until Christmas Eve as I felt I overdid it last week with various different Christmas events so I won't be having a Bailey's-fuelled wrapping session this year. Shame!
