December Music Thread

Have a new thread for December!

This is an ongoing chat group for musicians, parents of musicians and anyone interested in music. We talk about practice, scales, theory, instrument hire and purchase, concerts, exams, auditions and loads more. Newcomers and beginners are extra specially welcome - yes, a lot of us now have children who are getting quite advanced, but we all had beginners once. I started the conversation when my eldest was 6 and working towards Grade 1, and we now have learners of all ages and standards on here.

I am a teacher of woodwind, and have two daughters. Goo is 12 and in Year 7. She loves her new school, and has grown up fast since she started. The first few weeks were overwhelming and confusing. She loved the challenge of new subjects, new faces, lots of different sports, etc. Unfortunately, she is a poster child for complacency, is now finding it all very easy, and doing the bare minimum again, sigh. She extends this approach to music too, putting in a bit of effort at the last minute, and often making an eleventh hour bid to change piece for important performances. She is gregarious, intense and obsessed with her phone. Oops, I forgot to say, she plays the flute and piano. Grade 8 flute is pencilled in for some time next year (teacher is campaigning to wait until train tracks come off) and she hasn't performed on the piano or taken any exams yet.

Rara is 9, and a completely different kettle of fish. She likes music, but she likes reading, art and making things even more. She's talkative, eccentric and highly creative. I have no idea how her mind works. She is in Year 5 at the village primary, and couldn't really care less about academics. She plays the cello (working at an early Grade 4 level) and clarinet. Some of her clarinet pieces are Grade 4, but she is having some technical problems at the moment, mainly due to her size and incorrect placement of her fingers. So the next exam she does will probably be Grade 3.

Both girls are members of South West Music School (Rara starting next month) and both auditioned for the NCO. Goo was very pleased with herself, but Rara had an absolute disaster. She bounced back within a day though.

Trumpet, hope your DD soon realises she is as great as her big brother - positive attitude is another fabulous quality that takes you far and further.

Japanese, I wish I could just send DS to Star War as I also haven't doen all the wrapping yet. But I'm afraid I am the one who is obsessed with Star Wars in the house so cannot miss it! Blush

Doubleup · 21/12/2017 21:03

Well done miniWoolley!

Still struggling to get in the Christmas spirit here, but finished at work for the next couple of weeks. DD2 is currently playing guitar. She has struggled with motivation recently as she had yet another change of teacher in September who has missed 4 weeks through illness. She has been playing the same pieces for months now and is thoroughly bored of them and was talking about giving up. I did ask the teacher if DD could just move on and she said yes, but has continued to get DD to play the pieces. Frustrating! She's playing carols at the moment though, which is nice to hear. Struggling to get the bassoon practice done, but it is going to be boot camp here starting from tomorrow!

DD1 has been doing a music production course today with day 2 tomorrow, so she's happy. I was about to write that there wasn't much practice going on with her, but I just heard her warming her oboe reed up. I'm trying to impress on her the need to break the back of the new Grade 7 scales over the holiday as she will be taking the exam next term. Easier to do them now and keep them ticking over. Sax we can let slide a little until her next lesson at the start of term having just done her Grade 6. No result until then Sad

Witchend · 21/12/2017 23:45

Any suggestions for a good trumpet. Dd2 is preparing for grade 6 and her teacher says she needs a better one (dh is saying humph it was good enough for him!).
She doesn't need a top notch one, one that will do to grade 8 if she gets that far will be fine.

And any advice as to good places to get one from.
Thanks.

Trumpetboysmum · 22/12/2017 06:49

Ds has a Yamaha 4335 so an intermediate one and that's doing him more than fine . It makes a lovely sound. his teacher reckons it will last him all the way through school though lots at NCO had custom made trumpets his teacher is adament this is unnecessary when they are still so young. ( much to ds's disappointment and I'm happy to go along with his teacher on this one Wink)
I can't remember where you are based but we got ours through the county music service then we didn't have to pay VAT. I think many local music shops would sell this model so you can have a try ( ds tried one out at the Yamaha shop in London ) . Ds has a different mouthpiece now ( Bach 1 and 1/2 C but liked the one it came with too)
Happy trumpet shopping

Mendingfences · 22/12/2017 07:45

I may be a little mean, we've got loads to do today and dd1 has not yet appeared from her pit, so i've sent ds to practise his drums 😉 still no dd1 but now dd2 is complaining she wants to practise......

Doubleup · 22/12/2017 07:50

Mending - I'm assuming that you are an hour ahead of us in the UK? If so, not quite so mean. Xmas Grin

Mendingfences · 22/12/2017 08:38

Yes i am an hour ahead 😂 and dd1 is now ploughing through schradick studies with a metronome. I think that probably counts as boot camp!

LooseAtTheSeams · 22/12/2017 09:36

I need to organise a Bootcamp for myself - so far I've been plodding through my pieces and avoiding doing any scales or sight reading!

folkmamma · 22/12/2017 09:55

What are you working towards loose?? I did G1 piano with DD1 last Christmas, it was terrifying! I'd forgotten what exam nerves are like...

Dragging myself through last day at work. Roll on 4pm!! Confused

horseymum · 22/12/2017 10:43

My DH nearly choked when I said I might actually do some practice over the holidays as I count my orchestra rehearsal as all my practice normally! Trying to set a good example to the kids though. Fond my old bass studies and scales books as well as some fun music so feeling inspired!

drummersmum · 22/12/2017 11:18

Well done miniwoolley Star
Father Christmas at Bletchley Park, Japanese? Is he there to decodify the unreadable letters of five year olds?

LooseAtTheSeams · 22/12/2017 11:44

folkmamma I'm attempting grade 5 piano. My teacher asked me if I wanted to take the exam next term but It's too early and I'm not totally sure I can face the exam!

Kutik73 · 22/12/2017 11:55

We are heading for Hyde Park Winter Wonderland today! DH booked a table at F&M also (our family tradition during Christmas season). Our lovely visitors from Madrid are also coming with us. Their son is DS's best mate although he is 3 years younger than DS. They are equal mentally! Grin So kids will have fun.

Don't think 11+/music practice will be taken place today. DS may decide to entertain them with his piano/violin though!

folkmamma · 22/12/2017 11:56

Oooh well done you!!!! That's real commitment! G1 was a bit of fun really, just to keep DD1 company (and appeal to her competitive nature!) but I don't think I'll get that far!!

Japanese · 22/12/2017 12:17

drummersmum - yes, Bletchley Park Christmas grotto was good fun! It all seemed to be organised by men my Dad's age standing around in Christmas jumpers, which made for a pleasant change from the 20-something over-excited frustrated actors heavily-made-up elves where we usually go. And the DCs had to crack a code (which was quite tricky!) first to get a number to open a suitcase with a password in which they then had to tell FC.

Bootcamp day 4 out of 5 complete here. Have told DS that his challenge for the last day tomorrow is to complete a theory paper without crying. God, that really does sound as though I am torturing him at bootcamp doesn't it...but it's just that he gets frustrated whenever he can't answer something straight away and then I just have to open my mouth the wrong way and he ends up in tears.

Am mentally preparing myself for a present-wrapping bootcamp of my own later when DP takes the DCs to see Star Wars.

kutik - a F&M table sounds fab - is that for tea?

Trumpetboysmum · 22/12/2017 12:29

Japanese well done for carrying on with the theory even though ds is awake today (and has done lots of music practice) I just don't have the time or energy for forcing him to do theory it will have to wait . At this rate he will definitely be sitting Trinity grade 8 ( not that it really matters- yet )

Kutik73 · 22/12/2017 12:50

Japanese, we usually go there for their over the top sundaes and sweets. We are not particularly keen on any food that come with afternoon tea! We enjoy the window displays, stock up mince pies and other lovely stuff for Christmas, then go to the sweetie treat. Smile

Wafflenose · 22/12/2017 13:19

Day 3 of boot camp here. Rara is on to the third chapter of her theory book (only grade 2, so nothing new as yet) and is practising happily. Goo is dragging her feet and making noises about giving up... only because she is lazy though.

Trumpetboysmum · 22/12/2017 13:27

Still piano for ds ( do I have to do that ? Now my whole day is gone he says- he likes routine so fits it in much better when at school - but always does trumpet practice) and cornet for dd here - I'll have to remind her about yesterday's success to motivate her . At least we're busy with relatives for a few days so I won't have time to nag them will have to start again in a weeks time Grin

folkmamma · 22/12/2017 13:34

DH on duty this week - they've been doing practice but who knows to what standard! (He is not remotely musical). However I was impressed with Noo's theory yesterday, and at least some form of playing is happening so I'm taking that as a win.

Just booked a holiday. This is what happens when it's too quiet at work... 🙈

Witchend · 22/12/2017 15:28

Thanks Trumpet. Her teacher recommended Yamaha so that sounds good. I've even googled and it comes in silver, which she wants.
That looks like her Christmas present sorted then. Grin

Trumpetboysmum · 22/12/2017 16:05

Ds has a silver one too Smile

stringchild · 22/12/2017 16:36

Trumpet - I hold your ds’s wonderful NCO playing for dd insisting all she wants for Xmas is a trumpet....Confused

Greenleave · 22/12/2017 16:49
