The new annual thread for those interested and/or auditioning! Ask questions, update your news - lots of nco parents on board and those hoping to be :)

Hi Waffle - we are in the same place. To be honest I think missing a year wouldn't be a disaster givenbthey have done U12s already - and then come back fresh for a go at u13s. We will see but at moment music is sparse and I agree with her that settling into yr 7 and the new academic routine has it be a priority. I think redoing U12s is also slightly influencing her view at moment. We will see - no need or decide for a while.

Musicdoc - I think Vivienne def had views on so much VIvaldi - imagine she heard a lot! But of course sadly she is not here anymore. So I would let your dc play what works for them 😀

Yes, Goo likes regionals, and would really miss them. I'm torn between keeping everything going as normal (with masses of support) to show her that the world hasn't stopped turning, and letting her concentrate solely on Year 7. She got five bits of homework for the weekend and has been fretting massively about them... but four are done, and the fifth isn't due for a couple of weeks. We took her and Rara out for the day yesterday. We were very active, did some really exciting activities, bought ice creams, and didn't talk about school at all. It was much needed!

Trumpetboysmum · 10/09/2017 20:26

Niggle we have had our 10 th October date confirmed ( now I just need to negotiate a day off school but they are usually really supportive ) Shame we don't get to meet - maybe at AYM in the future ?

Nigglenotes · 10/09/2017 20:45

Yes, Trumpet, I got an email today too, confirming 10th, as she had missed my email about rearranging to 27th. But sorted now. We are close to AYM so hopefully will see you there at some stage... but unlike Waffle, I will double check I know who you are before divulging information! That is still funny.

Wafflenose · 10/09/2017 20:56

I still find it funny! The funniest thing is that I'm usually very shy! I can't believe I told Randomtrumpetmum something a bit secret. Not that it would mean much to her. Blush

Nigglenotes · 10/09/2017 21:04

Classic. Randomtrumpet must have been slightly confused but hid it well... or looked down at your shoes and thought, ah eccentric music mother..

Wafflenose · 10/09/2017 21:54

Grin I had the shoes on today!

Trumpetboysmum · 11/09/2017 12:37

I love those shoes !! They were how I spotted you !

TaggieOHara · 11/09/2017 19:03

musicdoc oh dear - DS is doing Vivaldi in A minor because he likes it (or did) and I wanted him to have something to 'get his teeth into' over the summer. He was playing it well, but suddenly is messing it up...

not sure what to do now :-( . We are giving it a break for a few days, anyhow as it is just getting worse.

Musicdoc · 12/09/2017 06:53

Taggie if he loves it he should play it, and let them know he loves it.....on my DDs feedback last year they wrote 'you gave us a lovely smile at the end of your piece, it would have been nice to see that whilst you were playing.' As far as it all going wrong at the moment, sometimes it is worth having a couple of days off - perhaps look up others playing it on YouTube to improve his enthusiasm? Does he have a back up option?

Minimusiciansmama · 12/09/2017 10:13

We just got our audition slot. We got first choice, which is good cos it's more convenient location wise and doesn't involve a day off school; though our second choice would have meant we had an accompanist. I now need to think about that!

Trumpetboysmum · 12/09/2017 10:59

Ds is playing without . Last year he did 1 piece with and one without this year s pieces work without and it's just too complicated to organise someone that we know who isn't teaching ( it's on a school day) an then get them to drive to Norwich- which is about an hour and a half away

se22mother · 12/09/2017 13:13

We are still waiting for our audition date. Does anyone know when we should hear by?

Trumpetboysmum · 12/09/2017 13:35

Yes I think they seem to be sending out an email exactly one month before . I got in a panic as I hadn't heard and they emailed me the date and time back but I also got an official email with the date even though it was on a Sunday. Think they are trying to make it fair for everyone though obviously the later on you pick the more time you have to prepare ds is so busy he's playing things he already knows ( I got my way in the end ) !!

TaggieOHara · 12/09/2017 19:11

Thanks musicdoc - we are having a few days off the Vivaldi 1st movement and he is starting the 3rd movement. He's getting on really well, and may play it for the audition. He even prefers it to the first movement. It is a great idea to listen to watch some YouTube. we need to find a recording that is a bit slower than the awesome Perlman one though...

Part of the problem with DS2 is that he is knackered from getting used to the chorister routine again. It's quite full on, with 6 days per week of rehearsal, and concerts and tours coming up, even before they start singing evensong!

Wafflenose · 12/09/2017 19:22

We're easing Goo back in with 15 minutes per day, and she's probably doing a similar amount on the piano. I daren't mention the audition!!

Nigglenotes · 12/09/2017 20:51

Just had a lesson. Decided on a Karl Bohm piece, it was a grade 6 ABRSM piece years ago. It has double stops, which are newish to DD, but so far, so good.

Waffle, I have to ask you, as you are a music teacher, but our teacher does a particular thing which drives me a bit nuts, and has done since the beginning. She is a good teacher, obviously. DD has had nothing but Distinctions in just under two years. For example, the piece is in G minor, and the finger positions are quite different on each string, with the addition of accidentals.

So she asks DD where is her position for the third finger on the g string, DD says natural. What about the d string, etc. Anyway, this questioning got DD thinking she had done something wrong, and that her answers might be wrong, so of course she then became completely silent and looked very uncomfortable. Long silences, more uncomfortable. At that stage she is not thinking about the notes, but that this is torture and the opposite of fun.

Anyway, I try to break the atmosphere, and say, Well, DD, you know your G minor, so this is a trick question, as it is where you know it is. She smiles in weak relief.

I know we have a good teacher. But the long tense silences when this happens are just so unnecessary. DD feels belittled and confused. I have brought this up once before with her teacher and she said the silence allows her to know what DD knows and doesn't know. This is simply not true, as by then DD is in a tunnel of despair. It just seems so unnecessary.

Er, apart from that, brilliant teacher!

Oops, I have just realised this is the NCO thread. Sorry. As you were! (I'll go back to the monthly thread now)

Wafflenose · 12/09/2017 21:09

We have this from the cello teacher, but after 3.5 years she has realised that Rara is a borderline selective mute, and when uncomfortable will totally clam up and sometimes cry. Teacher has learnt to change tack before that happens. She wanted her to hum today, which Rara can't do in front of an audience, so I joined in. It was mostly me and the teacher, but Rara got the idea!

If it's specific to scales, is it worth briefing your DD to play through the scale before answering the question, or at least play through it mentally?

Wafflenose · 12/09/2017 21:10

Have reported my first post, and re-written the relevant bit for here!

se22mother · 12/09/2017 21:38

Niggle is that perpetual motion ?

Nigglenotes · 12/09/2017 21:53

It's not specific to scales, it's anything and starts out of nowhere. DD was tearful. And she has a stutter, so is very sensitive in a verbally challenging situation. The thing is, it is clear within 15 seconds that she won't speak so letting the moment extend so horribly is useless. Now, I just break in with a comment, etc, as I can feel DD literally shivelling. It would be so easy for the teacher to adjust the atmosphere. DD bounced in and left deflated, but played well.. and she's only 9.

Maybe that's the price for a good teacher.

Anyway, six weeks until audition. Gadfly is probably the second piece, so lots of vibrato practice!

Nigglenotes · 12/09/2017 21:55

It's Sarabande in g minor. Lovely piece!
