July Music Thread

Wafflenose · 01/07/2017 00:12

I was celebrating the end of a VERY busy week with a glass of Wine and realised it's now just past midnight, and therefore July! Have a new thread!

The music threads are for ALL musicians, young and old, beginners and advanced, and every style of music!

I have two DDs, Goo (11) who is currently stropping and eye-rolling her way through her last few weeks at primary school, and Rara (9) who is funny and creative. Goo is working towards Grade 8 Flute, and has been playing the piano for just over a year. She is refusing to take any exams or perform on it though. Rara has her Grade 3 Cello exam coming up soon, and is just moving beyond Grade 2 Clarinet now. Both played the recorder from age 3/4 and got to a really good level, but other than helping out with my school groups, they don't really play any more - they are particularly obsessed with the flute and clarinet.

I am a teacher of woodwind - currently about 80 recorder pupils (many group taught) in two schools, plus two private flute pupils and six private clarinet pupils.

Wow drummers I missed the Albert hall post.
I'm so pleased for him. I bet you are proud.

Will book early for Verona thanks for the tip.

I still haven't got on the youtube channel, I don't know how to do it at ll.
It's not loading a recording that's the problem. I haven't even got to that bit yet.
I can't even find the channel.
I'm on a laptop though, not the app.
Have tried the usual search bit at the top and got lots of mumsnet stuff but not the music channel, help.

Greenleave · 13/07/2017 22:15

Loved Drummers performances especially the piano piece, no wonder he had nearly perfect marks for his G8 pieces. Please tell us how was he once he was in primary as I am loosing hope in mine now!!!

I told mine today that once she can play Oblivion then she can drop(violin). I am hoping she will be addicted to it by then.

On a slightly better (mood) note today that I will have a RAH prom concert at least once a week from now till mid August then 3 weeks holiday to looking forward to after this Saturday.

Wafflenose · 13/07/2017 23:28

It's a distinction (and by some way too) for tearful Rara! She did mess up some scales, but that was all. I assumed she would drop from a merit to a pass, and would have been happy with that. We are all stunned, had no idea she was any good at the cello (because she doesn't play very well in tunexpected sometimes), and I clearly have no idea of the required standard for grade 3 in strings.

My grade 7 clarinet pupil passed (70%, two merit marks for pieces and passed everything else) and will be skipping off to university happy. She has been with me since she was 8, so hasn't exactly set any records, but we are both delighted.

gilly I meant Llangollen, clearly way too much excitement today! Must also watch young drummer's performance asap.
Wow! Rara is amazing and it's good she got the result so quickly! Smile

Doubleup · 14/07/2017 00:14

Well done Rara!

DD2 is currently on tour with her school concert band in Germany. They did their first concert this evening to an audience of just under 300 people and had a standing ovation at the end with demands for an encore. She was buzzing earlier in her texts Smile

stringchild · 14/07/2017 06:26

Waffle - brilliant!

Double up- that's great and what it is all for (I think)

Trumpetboysmum · 14/07/2017 06:37

Waffle that's brilliant news well done Rara . Double that sounds so exciting ( ds will go on a tour next year) I'm also impressed that you get texts I have had very little communication this week from ds while he's been away ( others have been messaging factiming etc ) guess I should be pleased really that he just wants to get on with it . Hoping he might tell me about it when he gets back tonight?!?

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/07/2017 07:50

Well done to Rara.

DS2 gets back from his geography field trip week this afternoon. Grade 6 clarinet on Tuesday, so he has some catching up to do over the weekend.

I have been diagnosed with pneumonia, and will not be singing in the concert tomorrow with Laurence Cummings and the London Handel Orchestra. Sad

Trumpetboysmum · 14/07/2017 08:46

Oh no thesecond that's horrible Flowers here's to you making a speedy recovery

Doubleup · 14/07/2017 08:46

Trumpet it had gone quiet with the texts, but she was obviously inspired by the concert. The school music department is tweeting regularly, including a couple of clips from the concert, with the standing ovation on one of them after they finished a Beetles medley.

TheSecond, take it easy and don't push yourself too much. Pneumonia is horrible and can take quite a while to recover from. Can you still go and watch the concert? Flowers for you.

Doubleup · 14/07/2017 08:48

Beatles. Auto correct strikes again!

rogueantimatter · 14/07/2017 08:49

Very well done to Rara. At such a tender age. What a fantastic achievement.

TheSecond hope you manage to get a good rest and feel much better very soon.

Loose How lovely to watch your DS play at Wimbledon. Very special.

Green I am envious of your upcoming schedule. Hope you enjoy the RAH concerts. Please post about them if that's appropriate for this thread.

Little news from DS from his music course on the island of Skye, but his friend posted a video on fb of him jamming in a group.

Fleurdelise · 14/07/2017 09:05

Well done Rara! Great result!Star

Gilly you won't find it in search as it is a secret channel. You need to log on with the details you received and go to "my videos" to see the little musicians playing.

Green I am jealous too!

TheSecond I am sorry to hear you're not well and missing the concert. Sad

Well done to your dcs on music residential and touring with their orchestras, I can't see dd doing that as she's mummy's girl but I may be surprised in the future.

Doubleup · 14/07/2017 09:11

It was late last night when I posted - meant DD1 of course! DD2 is far too young to be going on tour yet! Maybe it was the Wine...... Smile

LooseAtTheSeams · 14/07/2017 09:16

TheSecond so sorry to hear that - I hope you feel much better very soon Flowersand lots of rest.
Double lovely to hear your dd is enjoying the tour. I'm not surprised, though. DS1 went to Germany last year on the music service tour and said the audiences were fantastic. The bands sold all the CDs, signed autographs and got hugged a lot! He didn't text me once!! I'm hoping he communicates at least once from France even if it's just to say what time they get back!

Kutik73 · 14/07/2017 09:40

Super well don to Rara!

TheSecond I wish you a speedy recovery. Unfortunately I was born with poor immune systems which means I get sick pretty easily. Pneumonia is my old enemy. It nearly killed me in the past! Lungs take longer to recover more than other organs. I hope you can at least go and see the concert but please have a good rest for now and be 100% before you go back to your normal routine.

I am also a fan of drummers's DS. I think plenty children can achieve G8 piano or even higher, and some can do so at much younger age. But what makes drummers' DS so special is the way he plays. Getting a certificate is achievable if you work for it, and I do admire the determination/diligence/hard-working of those who achieve grades, but being able to offer more than just a piece of paper is really special. I can also feel passion in him which makes him even more fascinating.

drummersmum · 14/07/2017 10:29

Oh my waffle StarStarStar So happy for rara! So much talent in that household.
And I don't have words to thank people for their comments to DS. It makes all worthwhile FlowersGin
fleur first row seat it is, it's unlikely so i could promise you the moon ha ha.
thesecond get well soon!
All those minis at residentials I'm sure they are all buzzing.

Minimusiciansmama · 14/07/2017 11:41

Fantastic news rara SmileSmileSmile

se22mother · 14/07/2017 12:19

Congratulations to Rara StarStar

Doubleup · 14/07/2017 16:02

Am I right in thinking that the ABRSM theory exam results are due today? Has anyone seen (if you entered them) or heard (if their teacher entered them) anything?

se22mother · 14/07/2017 16:08

Hi doubleup I've been thinking the same, and Abrsm website says it's today ..... but no news from her teacher

drummersmum · 14/07/2017 16:09

Am I right in thinking we don't have any ministring on the channel? Any chance String ?

Wafflenose · 14/07/2017 16:38

You are right. I'm not sure if she wanted to?

I will definitely try to get some Rara cello now.
