We've just bought DD1 a double bass and need to get it insured. Can anyone recommend an insurer? We've paid around £2K for it , if that makes any difference.

Allianz - I think they used to be British Reserve

If it were me I'd take the unaccompanied vehicle cover - it's not the sort of instrument you stick under your arm while you stop in at a coffee shop. If you lock it in the boot and walk away then that's when you need the extra cover for theft.

We use BBIS but that's no use to you seeing as yours is not a brass instrument. I think the rate was £10 per £1,000 of cover (including cover for theft from locked vehicle)

Double bass - gulp, well done! Can recoommend New Moon (www.newmooninsurance.com/musical/) to give you a choice. I left Allianz, not because of bad experience & haven't heard of any, but because I asked a question when I was about to renew and got an answer in glib insurance-ese from which I deduced the agent I spoke to didn't know much about instruments (it may have changed). At New Moon you talk to someone who does.

Cornhill (now Allianz).

NFU cover it in my household cover, musical instruments are specifically listed in the policy as all risks.

we're insured w/cornhill allianz (british reserve) but had the damndest time getting through to them to add another instrument this morning...(on hold for 20+ minutes!!!!)

so - based on recommendation from Cleebourg (see above).. have called New Moon.. they are underwritten by Hickox (sp?) and were very helpful and upfront... I may move everything to them in the future...
