how do you label a violin?

Ds1 got a new 1/2 size violin for xmas as he'd grown out of the 1/4 size we'd hired. Can anyone tell me how to label it so he won't mix it up with other people's at orchestra

I haven't labelled DD's flute or DS2's clarinet, just the cases.

There really should be no way for him or anyone else to get them mixed up at orchestra.
IME they are holding, playing, getting out, or putting away.
Just make him aware it is important to look after his instrument as they are expensive.
My dd wraps hers in a musical scarf before putting in the case and has photos and keepsakes on the inside of her case, it makes it personal.

We've already had the chat about looking after it and I expect to go on like a stuck record on that. I was just worried as he hasn't got to know the instrument yet so probably wouldn't be able to distinguish it from his neighbours. The hire ones all have numbers scratched onto the fingerboard so I was expecting to name this (though not by scratching as it's more expensive than most things I own)

DD and DS2 play in Orchestra and Wind Band, but I have never labelled their actual instruments. The cases have their names on, but as MoreThan said if they are out of the case they are usually in their hands.

He shouldn't be putting it down anywhere except safely in the case, so as long as that is labelled you should be ok. But if you're really determined, you might be able to attach something like a small ribbon or fabric nametag where the chin-rest attaches to the body of the violin.

Please label it!

Small stickers with his name on can go on the underside of the chin rest and fingerboard. Also worth putting one on the frog of the bow.

At my violin group classes the kids put their instruments down frequently to sing, move, clap, dance. So all instruments are labelled very well!
Oh, label the shoulder rest too!

You could get a UV pen and put a bit of sticky tape over it. So barely visible but you can see if you tilt it at an angle from the light.

For that matter, just a bit of sticky tape somewhere it won't ruin the varnish.

CheezePlease · 29/12/2013 19:56

You can put a label on the violin tailpiece

OddFodd · 29/12/2013 19:59

Can't you tie a ribbon around the handle above the strings if you're worried about damaging it?

marmitecat · 29/12/2013 20:09

Thanks. Ds does a music group where they put their instruments down sometimes to sing or do other exercises. He's in a class with kids from about 7 to 9 years old so they don't sit the whole time doing piece after piece.

I don't mind scrawling on the shoulder rest in marker pen but I think I'll put a sticker on the violin too or sew a nametape in a loop round one of the chin rest bits.

Tied on little tag from the pegs or scroll? Or name tape loop.

Definitely label it!

you can buy small personalised decals on the internet with their name on it, ordered some for my son's guitar and worked fine
