Switching from Violin to 'cello

Hi all

My dd (6 1/2) has been having violin lessons for a year at school. Her teacher has just started her with one of the Grade 1 pieces, and some of the scales, with a view to hopefully doing it at the end of next year.

BUT my dd tried to play a 'cello at the weekend and loved it, and wants to change. I have no idea whether to let her change now, or whether to suggest ("oh dear the cello teacher has no space") that she continues with violin to grade 1?

Any thoughts? I'm quite keen to switch as quarter sized violin sounds VILE and 'cello is lovely - but then there's the problem of carrying 'cello to and from school...

If she loves it then change. I wouldn't wait tbh, there are big differences between them (bow hold etc), and worth getting on to the cello ASAP.

Loving your instrument is such a good basis for learning!

Speak to the teacher and ask her advice!

see if you can speak to a cello teacher and maybe have a trial lesson. My dd wanted to do both but that apparently doesn't work since the bow hold is so different, also the left hand hold is different, especially the thumb. Apparently it is quite common to change from violin to cello and no problem but if she is goingvto change, there isn't any point continuing to grade 1 on the violin. She may as well learn the new bow hold straight away IMO
