I think we are about to contact our local branch and see if DS1 (6) can join, but the website has no details about costs of attending and the uniform etc. I want to make sure we can afford it before I get his hopes up.

I am sure it isnt that expensive but any advice greatly appreciated.

in our area prices vary from £18 a term to £25. In addition they need a beaver jumper which is aroun £11 new, but second hand jumpers are often available from those who are leaving for Cubs.

£1.50 a week here! I think the uniform was about £15.

northender · 28/02/2012 17:49

Ours is about £20 a quarter. Uniform is quite pricey but good quality and lasts well. Some groups sell used uniform. On top of that, trips etc but good value imho

whensteaready · 28/02/2012 17:50

We pay £30 a term which is very good value for the activities they do.

Pancakeflipper · 28/02/2012 17:56

We pay about £25 a term. Brill value as they are always out and about doing stuff. Off ski-ing tonight. Cannot remember uniform costs.

If its a good colony your child will love it.

ChippyMinton · 28/02/2012 18:10

Ours is about £30/quarter, which is probably at the high end. But it includes the Scout Association membership/insurance for the child, which some groups ask you to pay for separately, and is around £30 per year IIRC.

Ebay is also a good source for uniform, but don't buy it until you are sure your DS is going to stay.

Ours is £30 a term.
£6 joining fee.
Jumpers around £10 (and polo tops around £7 but you don't have to have that). Could always get a secondhand top, they dont get that much wear.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 28/02/2012 22:35

£6 a month here - and no separate fees. Activities might cost extra though.

Buy a jumper that will last until he is 8, apart from the cost you don't want to have to resew the badges.

If it is a good colony there might be a waiting list so I wouldn't delay asking.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 29/02/2012 16:05

I see, so it depends on a number of things. I have emailed asking costs and to be added to the waiting list. Thank you Mumsnetters once again to the rescue.
