Girls cricket

dd1 is 11. She's showing a big interest in cricket, and as she's going to an all girls school for secondary, I want her to do a mixed hobby, so I thought this would be a good one.

She's pretty good with the bat and 'can' bowl, although not especially accurately I can't judge her ability at all well though as I'm utterly useless at anything like this and am in awe of teh fact that she can hit the ball at all tbh. Dh reckons she could do really well at it.

What I'm worried about though, is that everyone else will have been going since the were six or something, and she'll feel really self-conscious.

Does anyone else have a dd who plays cricket? Are there many girls? What is the standard like at this sort of age?

Lots of clubs don't start colts till they are 8 or 9 yrs old, so shes not really too old to start with a colts training session.

Why not phone around/ ask about with local cricket clubs and see who has a colts training night that suits you, pop along and say hello and ask to join in. SOME clubs will have the bar and club house open for parents during colts training,

Girls who play colts cricket sometimes seem to have the advantage over the boys, there are fewer of them and so if they are good they are more likely to be picked up for further coaching in their teens by a country ladies squad. Also , IIRC girls can play down an age. so a 12 yr old girl can still play for the U11s. Pretty handy by the time you have lanky 14 yr old girls in the U13s team towering over the wee 12 yr old boys. The 2 teen girl colts I remember clearly from our last cricket club were both playing in the adults friendly teams at same age as the boys and were as good if not better players, one joined the county ladies team.
