piano/keyboard advice

dd7 wants to learn to play the piano. I cant afford a piano at the moment and also not sure if it just a whim,.
If i got her a fullsize keyboard(my neighbours selling one) and a basic piano book that we can both learn with, then see in 6 months or so if she still wants a piano and lessons.Would this be a good idea? or would it just set up bad habits etc for learning a real piano?

Dd 9 yo started lesson a couple of months ago and has a yamaha keyboard. Her teacher is fine with this and suggests we don't upgrade to anything more expensive until she decides if she really likes lessons.

As a piano teacher, I'd say a full size keyboard is fine until you know your child is going to stick with it. Digital piano is better still as it's closer to the feel of playing a real piano. I certainly wouldn't tell a beginner they needed to go out and get a piano. You'll be fine with a keyboard to start with :)

That's fine.
DD has had a yamaha keyboard,(but 2 of the keys are now missing!) and we are upgrading to one which is just keyboard without all the sound attachments etc.
There is no way we could fit a piano in the house, and we've seen one for about £800.

DD (8) started on a yamaha keyboard (NP 30, I think) two years ago and has just taken her grade 3 exam, so I'd say yes, a keyboard is definately a good option to start with. But make sure it is touch sensitive.
