Body fat index/mass - are these correct with those machines?

I used one last year when i weighed quite abit less then i do now and i had alot more body fat.

Now i weigh more and work out more and have quite abit less body fat then before, it has really given me a boost and encouraged me to continue exercising.

Does anyone else use them? And are they correct?

I really don't know if all machines read the same.
I hope the one I went on was wrong as it said my bodyfat was 36%
I know I need to do more exercise than none but I only weigh 10st.
I've not seen the machines anywhere public- are they about like the scales in chemists then? I'd like to check before resigning myself to an early grave.
Glad you are getting something positive out of it, I may be prompted to get off my bum soon

did you use the one in the chemist? I have not seen them.

I've used two, one that was in a large tesco, and one in a shopping centre, its a very large machine that you stand on and hold onto the handle bars.

Sorry to hear you was not happy with yours, but i really think if you start to do regular exercise you will see a noticeable difference, i have and have not been working extra hard... Even if it is just walking alittle futher. Good luck and maybe try a differnt machine to be sure.

Thanks. It was like a set of scales with handles on a wire. I went in for one of those mass tests for research where they check loads of stuff. I just find it hard to believe that 3.6 stone of my body is fat!

mousymouse · 27/06/2010 18:54

well, that does not sound too bad actually. "healthy" fat percentage for a woman over 30 is about 30 per cent. 3.6 stones by 3 makes just over ten stones (quickly without calculator...)

marriednotdead · 28/06/2010 21:47

Thanks mousymouse, that makes me feel much better. Everywhere I've looked up the expected numbers seem to be 15-25% max so was anticipating my body imploding very soon

CMOTdibbler · 28/06/2010 21:51

The vast majority of them are wildly inaccurate, and are only good to measure changes in your body fat if you use the same machine all the time.

Body composition studies are really, really difficult without direct imaging or complicated test.
