Please

I would like to join one, once I get a job but I am not sure if it will still be too pricey.

So, can you give me a rough idea ?

It depends where you are and what you want to do. Most have packages so you can choose gym only/gym and swim/off-peak etc. The smarter gyms like La fitness, Holmes Place etc can be about £40+ per month, but there are others like Courtneys that are only about £25 a month. Many of the "community" leisure centres you can pay as you go too.

amidaiwish · 17/01/2010 15:59

i pay £150 per month, for me and 2 kids

MrsMorgan · 17/01/2010 16:59

Thanks everyone.

I have no dp/h so can't do a joint membership.

Will look into council gyms too.

Mrs Morgan,

Do look at different alternatives.

I know that my gym seems a lot, but that covers nursery fees (there is an ofsted registered nursery attached to the gym) so my DS and DD go there while I go to the gym.

In actual terms, it works out more cost effective for me to do that than it would be to put them in a standard nursery and go to a council run gym.

Obviously, it depends on your circs (I have 2 kids under 2 and no DH/DP at home to help with childcare) and I don't work, so this works for me...

MitchyInge · 17/01/2010 17:52

my Next Generation membership (Cambridge/Ipswich) was about £100 a month I think but included tennis etc so worked out cheaper than gym + tennis

lots of nice things for the children too

gosh those were the days though, when did I ever have time for the gym?

Mine is just over £30 a month for any of the local authority gyms / pools / classes, etc, in my borough of inner London.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2010 17:56

£137 a month.

Champneys so all classes, steam, sauna, jacuzzi, pool included plus lots of very nice lounging areas to sit around in your bathrobe - given clean to you every time you visit. The small things like towels, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, facial toner, cleanser, cotton wool are good too as you don't need to take endless stuff with you - hairdryers too.

I haven't been there in 3 months as had too much to do.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2010 17:56

plus members lounge with juices and water and fruit free.

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2010 17:58

£32 a month - gym, classes and swimming

cornsilt · 17/01/2010 17:59

£33 a month

cornsilt · 17/01/2010 18:00

weblette · 17/01/2010 18:03

Council gym off peak membership - Mon - Fri before 5 and all day at weekends, £299 for the year. Also use of the pool and exercise classes so a pretty good deal!

Ivykaty44 · 17/01/2010 18:06

£68 per month and it is far cheaper than the ags I gave up at the same time as joining a gym and worth every penny.

I get a panaramic view of the golf course in the gym on the equipment and every peice of equipment has it's own tv, the time running wizzes past.

There are also classes inclued and with a range of classes in three studios around 25 classes per day to choose from.

I also get 3 par golf included - but I don't play.

There is a 20 m pool with part sectioned off for lane swimming - so if there is a class on or teaching you can still swim in the lanes.

There were two cheaper gyms - one was not much nicer than the loacl municipal gym and the other ok but didn't have the views

i picked it cos it is a nice place to be, and I go 5 times a week cos I like being in a nice place

nymphadora · 17/01/2010 18:06

£44 a month for me & 2 dds.All classes/gym/pool etc all the time. Nuffield Health

I am finishing it at the end of my contract time because I have moved and go even less often than before!

blametheparents · 17/01/2010 18:08

David Lloyd - £150 per month for me, DH, DS and DD (though we don't actually admit to the existence of DD so she is free at the moment [blush})

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/01/2010 18:09

£18.50 [cheapskate]

maclover135 · 17/01/2010 18:12

£31 a month for me and I can go to any one of 3 of the municipal leisure centres. The one I use is really nice (as nice as the private ones I used pre DS) and has a normal, good-sized pool as well as a leisure pool. The creche and classes are included in the price, and I can take DS swimming for free. I wasn't keen on the thought of the municipal centres until I went in and saw it for myself! Serves me right for being a bit of a gym snob; I could have saved myself a fortune!

Ivykaty44 · 17/01/2010 18:13

fags - sorry

coolma · 17/01/2010 18:18

We are at David Lloyd in Cambridge - we're not posh or rich or anything though We pay £169 a month for me dh and the two children. This includes about ten things a week for the kids, including a Friday night 'club night' for an hour and a half, film club for ds on Sunday, football on saturday and sunday and two arty groups for dd4 at the weekends too. We also use the holiday clubs for ds which are about £30 a day from 8.30 - 5.30 and I feel very good value. I go about three times a week and generally use the swimming pool and spa area and dh goes roughly the same and uses the scary upstairs gym too. It does sound a lot on paper - actually just worked it out and it's £2028 a year but it's also a place I feel very secure at and can happily sit down with a coffee and a newspaper - not confident to do that in 'town' for various reasons.
