Rugby- please can someone explain the rules to me?

The new man I am seeing plays rugby and I went to watch him last weekend. Unfortunately I was slightly embarrassed at not having any idea what was going on etc.

I know they have to pass the ball backwards and that if it is offside (ie passed forwards) they have a scrum. Is that right?

Don't understand the points system (NM has tried to explain, vaguely). And what is a hooker? We met someone and I said 'who is that' and NM said 'oh he is my hooker' (NM is captain of his team).

I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND

How can I be a WAG with no grasp of the rules

hes a prop

that made me chuckle

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:45

why?

OP posts:
bronze · 15/03/2009 16:46

oh but then you said he might no be playing his normal position hence me ruling our props (and hooker cos his mate is)

bronze · 15/03/2009 16:46

it was the sudden realisation that we could have told you right from the beginning.... but then of course I realised it didn't mean anything anyway

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:47

Well he did say it as if he doesn't normally have to

Perhaps he was trying to drum up sympathy

My DH played rugby at school.

The practice for him apparently involved standing there while all the other people flung themselves at him.

Not sure what position that is! Also know absoultely nothing about the rules apart from sometimes they kick the ball over the bar thing.

We had it on yesterday and I lodged a formal complaint that they seem to be getting smaller, some of them could even pass for footballers. Apparently they are having to get fitter and quicker for some reason I didn't bother listening to.

What I want to know is why are the hulking great thighs getting smaller? I have only ever been interested in the thighs

they're still not bad though...

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:49

NM has nice thighs

Which position is it when they lift you up, i think he has mentioned that in the past.

ROFL I just asked which one had initials NM and he is now baffled shall I put him out of his misery?

DH says 2nd row (locks) or no8 normally the one being lifted up.

DH has nice thighs too

bronze · 15/03/2009 16:56

normally second row

now I'm starting too worry about what I know. When I watch it it seems natural to me but thinking about it I keep thinking have I got that right

bronze · 15/03/2009 16:57

x post

I want a manly rugby playing other half

DH played at school but that was wing... think more weedy

TigersEnglandChick · 15/03/2009 16:58

Most commonly 2nd row who are the receivers at the line-out ... the ones who get lifted up tho it is sometimes also the number 8.

Saltire · 15/03/2009 17:03

Well I have been with DH for 18 years, and grew up in big rugby playing part of the country, he played and now referees rugby, and I still don't understand it

pagwatch · 15/03/2009 17:06

The trouble withthe rules is that you concentrate really hard and you are just getting the hang of it and then he runs past and your head emptys of almost every thought....

( and he is one of the weedy runny ones)

[sigh emoticon]

Saltire · 15/03/2009 17:09

DH played full back, I know that much, and my brother was a lock (well he is 6ft 7) and my other brother was flanker

Babbity · 15/03/2009 17:10

Easiest way to learn the rules is to play. Sadly I was never good enough to graduate from the sevens team, but it all made sense within a few games. I used to play hooker, which causes no end of hilarity when I tell people.

Babbity · 15/03/2009 17:18

this might help

The scrum half puts the ball into the scrum and the hooker finds it with his/her foot and "hooks" it out so that the scrum half can take it out of the scrum and pass it along the backs who run forward and try to score tries.

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 17:21

LOL Pag

Yes i think that he is normally one of the ones being lifted up. All his pants are ripped in the same place

DD2 played hooker - I wanted to buy this on a T-shirt, but DH wouldn't let me

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 17:54

Love it!

Babbity · 15/03/2009 17:56

I used to have a t shirt which said "Fancy a ruck?" on the back.

FAQinglovely · 15/03/2009 17:59

SoH - passing the ball forward is a, ermm a forward pass a knock on is when it's ermm........knocked forwards

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 18:29

For all those who were waiting with bated breath....

I have confirmation from the man himself- number 5 second row.

Does that make him a lock then? a lifty up one?

OP posts:
JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 18:49

er...now he wants to know why I need to know.
he is not yet aware of MN. I think at this stage it's best.

'just really interested darling'

OP posts:
TigersEnglandChick · 15/03/2009 19:00

Yes, that makes him a lock - a lifty-up one
Martin Johnson played lock (tho he played 4) don't know if that means anything to you tho ...
