Rugby- please can someone explain the rules to me?

The new man I am seeing plays rugby and I went to watch him last weekend. Unfortunately I was slightly embarrassed at not having any idea what was going on etc.

I know they have to pass the ball backwards and that if it is offside (ie passed forwards) they have a scrum. Is that right?

Don't understand the points system (NM has tried to explain, vaguely). And what is a hooker? We met someone and I said 'who is that' and NM said 'oh he is my hooker' (NM is captain of his team).

I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND

How can I be a WAG with no grasp of the rules

didn't think for a moment you were twohats! Just wanted to clarify the lingo for you.

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:19

Glad we have that straight then...

One of the other halves had bloody flipflops on though, she must have just had a pedicure. Oh, how I laughed when she had to wrap up her feet in a jumper.

The best sum up I've come across is football is a gentlemans game played by hooligans. rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen.

Bloods fine its when they can't stand I worry. they don't arse around on the floor not getting up (like in football) unless they truly can't get up.

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:24

yes he was down for a wee while
he has been knocked out and carried on playing in past though, not a wuss!

I love rugby.

If you really want to know the rules then go to a game (or watch one on tv) with someone who both knows the laws and is happy to explain them. My DH knows all the laws but hates having to explain them where as I can bore even the most enthusiastic 'learner' (For want of a better word) with all the nuances!

The commentary is much more informative than it is in other sports (like football or cricket) as the game is more intricate.
I once heard rugby/football compared with chess/draughts ... think it's a good analogy.

I'm keeping an eye on the score and taping the game for later when DH is home

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:25

yes that really annoys me re footballers, the dramatic effect with which they greet injury.

I used to play hooker. No one else on the field knows how they do what they do in the scrum and it is never ever been filmed [yes its true].

Lets just say they do everything everbody else does but standing on one foot with their head between their knees. Lightening reflexes, powerful and intelligent with some unique skills thrown in.

A thinking woman's forward in my view. Modest as well.

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:31

Wow, shame my nm isn't a hooker then!

Not sure exactly what position he does play, TBH

Even having watched him play...

Yes we can see that ABetaDad

Hows he built JTH? may give you a slight clue

pagwatch · 15/03/2009 16:34

where does he stand when there is a scrum? Or is he inthe scrum, in which case which row in the scrum - front middle or back? Does he put the ball into the scrum?

bronze · 15/03/2009 16:35

oh didn't notice she had seen him play

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:35

He is in the scrum, and he is quite well built. 6'4" and v broad. Don't think he is one of the little runny ones

ROFL BetaDad - if it wasn't for the fact that you said 'used to play' I'd be convinced you were George Chuter - you sound just like him

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:37

He was on the front row when I watched him but I don't think he does normally, think he was filling in for someone because he said 'oh, am playing on front row today'

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:38

Maybe thats a red herring TEC

TigersEnglandChick · 15/03/2009 16:38

JTH - he could be a lock, or back row - anything numbered 4,5,6,7 or 8 ... tho a friend of mine has a similar build and plays on the wing; it depends on the rest of the squad a bit.

bronze · 15/03/2009 16:39

flanker? no8? 2nd row?

thats assuming hes not a prop or hooker

you could just ask him what he normally plays

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:41

oh i know he just isn't here so its more fun to speculate

OP posts:
pagwatch · 15/03/2009 16:42

perhaps he is a flanker and you just thought you had misheard...

JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:43

lol
i forgot about the numbers
he was wearing number 1

OP posts:
JohnnyTwoHats · 15/03/2009 16:43

but i thought that was because he is the captain
