Anyone else taken up cycling?

I don't mean the proper road cycling that dp does.
I bought a used hybrid from ebay and it's great I've only gone 5 miles up to now with dp (he bought himself a used one from the same guy when we went to pick mine up) Dp has a proper road bike but I won't be getting into that.

There's a great cycle path that goes straight to my mum's and it's 5 mile round trip. It takes around 15 minutes to get there at the moment and would take me an hour by bus as I'd get 2. I only have to cross 2 roads and I'm there.

I've been looking at other local cycle routes so will try them out too.

My DH bought me a mountain bike for Christmas but have only been on it twice. I need to make more time to go more often though.

Ivykaty44 · 14/03/2009 18:47

Bruised shins? how on earth? Did you have toe straps? or is your foot slipping of the pedal and bashing your shin?

sfxmum · 14/03/2009 21:11

yes it is the bashing still can't get the pedals going at the same time, but will get there at the moment can't quite manage momentum feet on pedals and avoiding leaning sideways

Can I join? I just got a new bike, after having not ridden one for years, i got a trailer for the back and put my youngest and my mindee in it, and my four year old rides his bike. Now we all bike to school and its so much better than getting in the car! I would like to find more cycle paths, were lucky to have one along the river next to our house, and i agree that going on the roads is pretty hairy, definitely wouldnt fancy it with the trailer!!!
sfx mum, so impressed with your determination, well done, good luck!!

JumpingDizzy · 15/03/2009 10:36

Welcome geraladinetheluckygoat witha new bike

well done sfxmum keep it up. Shame about the shins

I'll be out on mine later, off to the field to walk dog and watch boys watch football

Dp works nights so will ride when he gets up

That's great Riven glad you're feeling better.
Dp's going to alter my handle bars and seat as I'm using my thighs mostly at the moment. I feel a bit scared when I can't put my feet down but I'm sure I'll soon get used to it.

DP said your bike is nice I'm non the wiser

Hi! thanks for the nice welcome
I went out on mine this afternoon, was wonderful, a total escape from the kids as I left them with dp, put on my ipod and went along the river! It was lovely, I agree, Riven, it does feel great when you are peddaling along, I had forgotten too till i got the New Bike!
I biked to the marina, which was then traumatic as loads and loads and LOADS of people were lumbring around the lake (in style of prison excercise yard...) and i had to get off and walk!!! I need to investigate some more cycle paths...
LOL at shuddering at football, JumpingDizzy, that will be my life in a couple more years, I think.....!!

JumpingDizzy · 15/03/2009 20:29

Glad you had a great day geraldinetheluckygoat I didn't get out on mine as had ds1's friend here from 11 until 3pm I offered him food but he said he doesn't eat many meals? Anyway by the time he'd gone I had the boys hair to cut (I'm a hairstylist) and other things to get ready for them to go to their dad's.

I should get out tomorrow if it's fine. Today's been so lovely, I didn't even need a coat so hope it's good tomorrow?

Happy cylcling everyone

yes i agree, if you have to go, its better, otherwise there always seems something more pressing to do...going off for a bike ride seems so indulgent!! LOL

JumpingDizzy · 16/03/2009 10:50

Funny I have a Morrison's nearby and dp goes there on his bike if we don't need much. It's not far though, just through the park. I'll be doing the same now I have a bike. Dp works for Morrison's (transport) so we get 10% off

The weather was bright this morning looks like rain now so may not get out?

I know I am a wuss. It hasn't rained yet so might have a ride to mum's house, cycle path almost all of the journey.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 16/03/2009 19:38

lol did you go out in the end, Jumping? It's great if you can get where youre going without having to go on many roads, wish there were more cycle paths....

JumpingDizzy · 17/03/2009 10:25

No I didn't end up going as had to pick boys up I was missing them and they only went to dad's yesterday so was happy to pick them up.

It's glorious today but we're going to a National Trust place (Cragside) as dp is on night shifts and this is his last day/night off. May get to cycle later? At least I'll be getting some exercise there's lots of walking to do.

Check out the London Cycling Campaign

geraldinetheluckygoat · 17/03/2009 14:28

I think its meant to be sunny for the rest of the week, Jumping, so hopefully you'll be able to get a chance soon!

JumpingDizzy · 18/03/2009 10:24

Wow another glorious day, think you're right geraldine We're going out again as dp still off but will have a ride later. We were going to ride to the dr's this morning as I had an appointment but I couldn't think if they had anywhere to fasten the bikes too. Funny you'd think a dr's surgery would encourage it? Anyway there wasn't anywhere. I'll suggest it next time I go

Can I join in.

I used to cycle as a student, in Cambridge, where it's a complete no-brainer cos bikes outnumber cars in the centre.

It's definitely more hair-raising here (Surrey), but I'm still loving it. Have got a back seat for DD2 (3) and we're working out some pleasant routes with not too much main road. Cycling to nursery is great. DD1 is keen on cycling and we're having a go at all cycling to school, but it's a bit of a juggle because she's only 6 and not ready to cycle on any but the most deserted roads. Quite tricky to work out how we can travel together safely.

I'm loving it, though. The sun is out - I've just dropped DD2 at nursery on the bike, then sped along to B&Q for some flowerpots. Back quicker than I would have been in the car and I've had some exercise too. Smug? Oh yes .

JumpingDizzy · 18/03/2009 10:40

Good for you Smithagain Have you seen you can send for a cycle pack? Also that there's lots in the tourist info place?
No doubt you know seen as you're a seasoned cyclist Sounds like you're having a great time on your bike. I agree about the time too, I would have to get 2 buses (1 hour at least) to my mam's house whereas on bike it takes at the most 15 minutes.

futurity · 18/03/2009 14:26

thanks to this thread I went and got my bike serviced last week (as well as adding mud guards and a bell!) and am now using it alot more: with the kids, popping to the shops, rode to netball last night. Have sent off for that cycle pack so all in all thanks to you all for inspiring me!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/03/2009 15:01

yayyyy!
we are away at the weekend, and actually feel a bit dissappointed that I won't get a chance to go on my bike LOL Obsessed?

JumpingDizzy · 18/03/2009 19:54

That's great futurity I need a bell for mine, plus lights. I haven't bee out in the dark yet and probably won't but I'd be better off getting them.

Lucky you geraldine, going anywhere nice? Dp and I have been out at NT properties the last couple of days it's been lovely.

OP posts:
Smithagain · 18/03/2009 20:06

Think I need a bell as well. I discovered today that people on riverside cycle/pedestrian paths are in a world of their own and easily startled, no matter how considerately and carefully you cycle past. Especially the ones that are on their phones.
