Shrink my waist!

HotPodiumGuysGirl · 23/06/2026 11:28

If you wanted to lose 10 inches off your waist, ie 35 down to 25 inches, what would you do?

Answers including “breathe in” and “weight loss jabs” are not really what I’m looking for.

Diet and exercise tips please!

You can't spot reduce. You can only lose weight. So, calorie count, work to calories 500 per day under your TDEE.

At the same time, do exercise at least three times a week. You can tone your middle area by doing work on your core. Pilates is good for it and some weight training.

But, ultimately, you need to reduce your food intake.

IwanttoWFH · 23/06/2026 12:37

You need to lose weight (body fat). I lost nine inches off my waist but that was by losing four stone in weight and weight training.

ohwhatthehelly · 23/06/2026 12:53

I grew my waist massively when I weight trained and exercised regularly. I have a naturally small waist and muscle just piled on there and some matching fat. Depends on your starting point really.

HotPodiumGuysGirl · 23/06/2026 19:44

Four stone? Gulps I was thinking of 2 😭

From a 35 waist to a 25 waist is a huge difference - that’s going from a size 16 to a 6. Of course that’s not just going to be 2 stone! Are you sure you mean 10 inches, because that’s a massive amount to lose, and you’d need to lose weight all over really.

Newforspring · 23/06/2026 19:49

25 is really, really tiny - 90s supermodel tiny.

Strength training, calorie deficit, cardio and a great diet! Foolproof but takes a while and its hard.

However...for a quick inch or two...are you menopause age? If so probably inflammation and water retention will be causing a couple of those inches. Estrogen fluctuations can make those issues worse. If you follow a low inflammation diet alongside some calorie reduction the first couple of inches ckuld come off quite fast.

You could try a hula hoop! Easy to do in front of the TV. I do it occasionally when I remember. I can't tell you if it works or not, but it feels as if it should get your waist down!

Pineapplesunshine · 23/06/2026 20:00

in terms of exercise, ive found my waist slimmer since doing an hour on the cross trainer twice a week (not holding the handles), weighted deadbugs (weights on ankles and in hands) and running a decent amount a week. Not sure thats what you want to hear but it’s helped me - ive not lost weight and dont want to but did want to tone.

I must be really tiny then, though my hips are 37, and my bust 36. I’ve always felt that my hourglass figure was genetic, I’m not quite sure how you achieve a 25 inch waist if you are not predisposed to have an hourglass figure. Or a very very slim figure.

FrothyCothy · 23/06/2026 20:04

You can give the illusion of a smaller waist by building up your upper back and shoulders, and your bum 😁

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 23/06/2026 20:08

Calorie deficit, increase your daily step count, and strength train (the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn). Base your meals around protein and fibre rather than carbs.

Most a erage sized people's ribcages would struggle to accommodate that with any realistic amount of flesh... My waist hasn't been that small since I was about 11 and I certainly wasn't a fat child or young woman. I think tonachieve that waist measurement I would have to make myself pretty unwell 😐

lovecotswoldsliving · 23/06/2026 20:18

You would have to stop eating and remove a few ribs.
You are not naturally skinny, so give yourself some slack. Aim for a 30-32 inch waist at first.

HotPodiumGuysGirl · 24/06/2026 00:38

Thank you for your replies. I am menopausal and I need to go back to the gym, definitely. I’m fed up of looking like a brick on tooth picks which is why I’d like to shrink my waist and get some definition.

I’m 5ft 6in, weigh 8st 10lb, am fit and toned, and have a 27in waist. I’d be have to be seriously underweight to lose another two inches.

Meadowfinch · 24/06/2026 00:47

Obviously you need to lose the weight, so cut out processed crap, sugar, alcohol, and switch to a diet of mostly fruit, veg and protein. Cut your carbs by half. Switch to wholemeal pasta/bread/couscous, and brown rice. Make simple meals from scratch.

Walking, running or cycling will tone and tighten the muscles across your abdomen and lose that flabby look, as your weight reduces.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 24/06/2026 09:18

Unfortunately you are the shape you are OP. The only thing you can do is lose weight.

I am not naturally small waisted. But I have lost 3 stone over the last few years and got into exercise. I now have a 26” waist and I’m a size 6-8. To maintain this I eat sensibly (no dieting as my activity level takes fuelling but just being mindful about amount of rubbish I consume), run 30-40 miles a week and strength train 2-3 times a week.

I carry weight around my middle and I’m am quite please now with my shape but it’s taken a complete lifestyle change and several years to get here.

Wre · 24/06/2026 09:32

Agree with building your back and bum to create the illusion of a smaller waist.

unsync · 24/06/2026 10:01

I do straight leg RDLs with half my body weight, that has really made a big difference to my core strength and brought my waist in. It was combined with weight loss and Pilates though and took a couple of years. I lift weights three times a week. You have to be consistent and make time for it.

Thatfattrollop · 24/06/2026 18:50

You sound like an apple shape so 25 inches is probably not achievable. I’m a pear shape with a very slim size 8 waist and still about 28 inches. It does look slimmer because I have a big bum so maybe pp suggestion of building muscle in other areas will work. And diet of course.

IwanttoWFH · 24/06/2026 20:20

HotPodiumGuysGirl · 23/06/2026 19:44

Unfortunately not! I went from a large size 12 (pushing to a small 14) to a size 6. My waist was 35 inches and it’s now 26. I am a natural hourglass though. I think it also depends on your natural shape and where you tend to carry weight. I’d definitely recommend weight training. As another poster said, building your shoulders and back creates the illusion of a smaller waist.

HotPodiumGuysGirl · 24/06/2026 22:48

What happened to the traditional 34/24/34 shapes of yesteryore beauty contestants?

Ans are made in the kitchen. By all means do the exercises. Pilates, side planks twisty things. - I swear by reformer Pilates but for the first 18months I realised I was ripped, under a massive layer of fat. So I am slowly losing weight and now it’s paying off. Good luck!
