Hello runners!

Continuing on with our general running chit chat...

I have nothing to add about my lack of running, however I feel the urge to share the random fact that burpees were named after a physiologist with the amazing name of Royal Huddleston Burpee Snr. Grin

@BogRollBOGOF nooooo!

So he was called Royal Burpee in day to day life? (His mum obviously had some serious pregnancy hormones going on, like when I wanted to call Dd2 Bathsheba)

That is an amazing name @BogRollBOGOF! love a random fact!

welcome to the thread @runnerducky 58 mins is a very good time for a first 10k! An ultra is a great end goal. I did my first in July and now I’m hooked. I have another booked for the weekend after next!!

tonight I did the final 5k in the summer series that our club puts on. I have marshalled for all of the others but always said I would run the last one. As I have said many times, I hate a fast 5k 😂 and it’s such a fast field that you feel quite slow if you can’t run sub 18 mins!! But I went out and did it and managed a PB of 20:19. Not bad and now I’m thinking that I need to try and get sub 20 at least once and then I can retire from fast 5ks forever 😂. So I might head over to the winter series put on by another local club and give it a try 😩😂😜

My coach is making noises about me needing to up my mileage significantly to be ready for my marathon. I know this, but it doesn't magically free up hours in the week....

I'm thinking I might postpone my entry in a standard tri this month, so my training can be run focussed. Because I haven't actually been on my road bike for ages anyway, so I wasn't going to do all that well and it's a bit of an interruption to the pattern. Spent a lot of money on getting the bike right earlier in the year though, so I am conflicted! Need to make that decision by tomorrow otherwise I'm inside the no-cancellation period.

Welcome @runnerducky , for 9 months of training that's a great 10k time! You must have started with good base fitness? You've certainly taken to it like a duck to water, anyway ;-)

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 10/09/2026 12:06

@TyneFilth how long is it until your marathon? How many miles are you planning on doing weekly? It is hard to fit it all in around life sometimes. Depending on the time you’re hoping for then peaking at around 40 miles is probably enough. I’ve never put 60 miles a week in for anything yet and I think I’ve only reached 50 once.

postponing the tri might be a good idea if you feel like it’s all too much but honestly, if you want to do it then just do it. I’m a bit of a believer of not putting one thing on hold for another. I got told off my our club couch last night for going for a 5k PB when I have an ultra in a week and a bit, but I wanted to do both so I did. 😂. but where I think a lot of the men go all out in 5ks and end up in a bit of a bad way and take a while to recover my body doesn’t let me do that. I never get to the point where I try so hard that I don’t feel fine 10 mins later. Maybe this is why it’s taken me so long to improve my time 🤔😂

It sounds like it. And presumably if he was senior, there must have been a junior with the same name too Grin

Well if you were named Royal Burpee you'd obviously want to pass it on!

So my AI coach now has me doing lots of glute engagement stuff then run/ walking on the treadmill - literally working my arse off! I spent today doing boring box steps and crab walks with resistance bands etc.

I did get some proper weighted press ups in though, so I didn't feel completely remedial. I do weirdly love press ups.

Did my weekend long run yesterday, 20km "easy" was the plan but on an "undulating" route... I have a reliable circuit that is about 18km and there are two points where I thought I could add on a bit more... Chose a point at 11km where I would normally continue south down a road, but went off into a woodland. Trouble was I didn't know the area and was merrily running through a lovely forest then realised I was somehow now going north. Got the phone out and realised I'd gone further away from the road than I needed and was pointing in the wrong direction. I'd now done 13km and the map thought the shortest route home was still 11km argh. Anyway, I found actual shortcuts, did 22km, the last 2 were a hobble, I hurt the rest of the day but kept moving and had a massive carby lunch to recover, and today the plan is a nice gentle swim.

Good effort @TyneFilth ! Make sure you have protein for tissue repair.

Mixed day here. I did my 8km run/walk through gritted teeth and my injured glute behaved itself, but my TFL which has been niggling for some time was really grouchy.

It's only sore, but still...... keep on saying to myself, it's a journey back to HM fitness, it's a journey.....

@TyneFilth this is my worst nightmare!

I did 7 miles easy on my deload week, got 3.5 and 3.5 tues and thurs before my long run of 17 miles on Sunday. I am completely convinced that I’ve not got 17 miles in me 😳 and freaking out at the thought of 20 miles the Sunday after.
someone please tell
me that this is normal in marathon training
