All welcome! A place to share or goals and achievements and to motivate each other along the way.
A virtual mumsnet run club perhaps?

I have been on a half mara chat group the last few years but currently not training for one. So, my 2025 goals are:
Now until spring - get fitter for a 15 mile hilly trail run event in April.
Summer - try for a 5k PB, try to get faster?
Autumn - maybe do a half mara? Cross Country again ( I am slow and old but love this).

Who else wants to join me?

That's encouraging! Thank you!

Big Weekend

if you cram all your training into the weekend, can you still expect to get faster? A new study put the ‘weekend warrior’ approach to the test. The researchers divided a group of adults, made up of the sedentary to recreationally active, into two groups: a high-frequency group who did four workout a week (two moderate-intensity, two high-intensity) and a low-frequency group who did two workouts a week on back-to-back days (but each was twice as long).

Who enjoyed superior fitness gains after the eight-week period? There was no difference between the two. VO2 max improved significantly in both groups, as did metabolic efficiency (meaning they were using oxygen more efficiently).

What does this mean for you? If your working week makes training impossible, you can still achieve meaningful results just training at the weekend.”

That's interesting. I'm due to race next week, but in the last few weeks of parkrun, I have felt quite tired and fatigued. I've been doing my usual mileage of 30 miles ish a week, jut I've also been to the gym twice a week and cycled.

This week, I've skipped the gym and have only been on one run before I ran my second fastest mile on a 15 minute rogression run. It felt good.

It could be due to many other factors of course, but sometimes less can be more.

This is very interesting. Whilst I do prefer to spread out my exercise as daily exercise is good for me mentally, it’s good to know that if I don’t have time and squeeze it into the weekend it won’t do my fitness too much harm.

I have a race next week and I really want a 10k PB. I’ve been feeling a bit off this week and haven’t done as much as usual. I’m just back from a 5 mile run and my pace was fine but it was harder work than usual. Hoping I’m on top form next Sunday and I can manage to get under 50 minutes which is my aim. I might take some gels and gummies. I wouldn’t usually for a 10k but they may just give me the extra kick I need to keep a consistent pace under 5min/km. We shall see.

Jumbojem · 05/06/2025 21:30

I had sprint intervals on the garmin plan, after two days of intense work meetings (and so too long sat down with poor posture) I wasn't that keen to go and thought it would be awful. Turns out I was wrong, the run felt great and doing the short sprints in between longer easy spells felt good. I did cut it a bit short though as time was getting on.

I did a 28min C25K jog tonight and found it hard work mainly due to a new route with a fairly steep hill half way through. I've also been on my feet all day so that probably didn't help either! I'm going to try a flatter Parkrun this weekend and see how it goes 😀

Thanks for the interesting info on the "weekend warrior" training approach @Sparticle .

Sparticle · 06/06/2025 06:49

Good luck in your race @Whataninterestinglookingpotatoand well done @Jumbojem!

I went for a very slow run last night with my friend who finished C25K recently. Jogged 1km then a 3km walk then jogged another 1km. I’m taking her to the local flat parkrun tomorrow and I’ve promised to run at her speed and encourage her and I’m actually looking forward to intentionally not running fast ☺️

Currently sitting on the train down to London for work. So no running today. I hope to get a long run in on Sunday, not sure where or how long yet.

Sparticle · 06/06/2025 06:53

I should just say that obviously my idea of running fast is far slower than most people anyway but hopefully you know what I mean - 9+ min/km instead of less than 6 min/km.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 06/06/2025 06:57

@Sparticle i hope you enjoy your park run!

I haven’t been to one for years, tbh last time was before I could easily run 5k, but all this talk of it is making me want to give it another go. I might make the effort tomorrow morning. We shall see. I do want to do a long run on Sunday though I prep for the half at the end of the month and don’t want to over do it. So will see how I feel.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 06/06/2025 07:20

Random park run question. Can you just show barcodes on your phone these days? Or do they still need to be printed? I wasn’t planning on going into the office today but I guess I can if I definitely need it printed.

Fizbosshoes · 06/06/2025 07:26

You can definitely show it on your phone (or your watch)

Lovely. Thank you.

Londonmummy66 · 06/06/2025 12:35

I've been behaving myself on the injury bench but have just learned that I have a meniscal tear that is going to require surgery to fix. Pretty gutting - can I ask if anyone on here has been in that position and then been able to get back to running?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 06/06/2025 13:28

@Londonmummy66 what rubbish news! So frustrating. No experience personally but hopefully you should be able to get back o running after the recovery period.

JanuaryOSunshine · 06/06/2025 13:45

That’s a poo @Londonmummy66 no experience here of that injury other than to say do take your time coming back. If I’ve ever tried to rush it it’s always made things worse, and focus on - what you can do not what you can’t - sometimes help when tying to stay positive. Good luck

Londonmummy66 · 06/06/2025 15:48

Thank you - yes it sucks - I had a charity place for the Roayl Parks Half and its pretty clear I'm not going to be able to run it this year.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/06/2025 19:29

@Londonmummy66 so sorry to hear your injury news. Such a shame about your Royal Parks place.

DH had knee surgery a few years ago for a combination of things including a torn meniscus and a ruptured ACL and was back to running after a few months. He only runs once a week and has to be careful (he sticks to roads and won't go near trails) but it's better than nothing.

A swimming friend had hers done last year and has been very committed to her rehab. She's not running AFAIK, but cycling, swimming, yoga-ing and gym-ing.

Londonmummy66 · 06/06/2025 20:09

@OhOneOhTwoOhThree - thank you - that's good to know - the consultant did promise me that I will be able to run again eventually but warned me there would be a lot of exercise bike (which I hate) in the meantime....

SoapCollector · 06/06/2025 21:28

Good luck with your 10k pb @Whataninterestinglookingpotato

Sorry to hear about your injury @Londonmummy66 hope you are soon on the mend.

Good luck to all those doing Parkrun tomorrow and hope you have a fun time 😀

Tinkerbellflowers · 06/06/2025 23:35

I'm planning on doing my first Park Run tomorrow. I run a lot, but have decided I want to run with others and try and make some running friends!

How did you get on with your first Park Run @Tinkerbellflowers? Hope you enjoyed it! 😁

princessspotify · 07/06/2025 11:06

Morning All. I've been lurking on this thread for a while.
I recently took up running, joined a running club at the end of March and absolutely loving it. I've also been going to park run and thi morning I've got a new personal best. I've been sitting at the 38min time for a while and I've got to 37mins 45sec. Not much less but I'm chuffed with myself.
I've also just signed up for my first 10k in Sept.

xsquared · 07/06/2025 11:20

Welcome @princessspotify and well done in your parkrun pb.

You will enjoy seeing a significant improvement in your running with regular attendance at the running club and parkrun!

Good luck with the training for the 10K race.

Sparticle · 07/06/2025 11:20

Gutted to hear about your injury @Londonmummy66 but hopefully you’ll be able to get back to it one you’re properly healed?

Welcome and well done @princessspotify ! And @Tinkerbellflowers how did you get on?

I went to parkrun this morning with my friend and we did it in just over 43 minutes so she was really happy! It was lashing it down rain though although at least not too windy. I got back, had a lovely hot shower, have put my fluffiest loungewear on and have just made myself a hot chocolate. It’s June for goodness sake 😆

I have got a two-week free trial code for Runna and wondered if anyone on here uses it?

Londonmummy66 · 07/06/2025 11:33

Thank you @Sparticle - fluffy clothes and hot chocolate sounds great after a wet parkrun

princessspotify · 07/06/2025 11:38

@Sparticle @xsquared Thank you both.
