Core Strength

I read this thread and it really summed up how I've been feeling lately which was very reassuring. Page 5 | I used to be attractive, how has this happened? | Mumsnet

After birth I rapidly lost weight because of breastfeeding, walking everywhere so baby would nap and not having time to make food.

Since stopping breastfeeding last year, I have gradually put on weight, and realised a few months ago I was 11 stone. Historically I've been between 9.5-10.5 which has always felt good. I also appear to have shrunk, I was previously 5ft10 and now I'm more like 5ft9 or 5ft9.5 if I stand really straight. It's depressing! I'm gradually losing the weight with more attention to my diet and some days of 16/8 type intermittent fasting, but I want to get my strength back. I had an emergency c section and pre covid/baby I used to do bouldering and walk everywhere and felt really strong and powerful. I always used to be able to eat anything and remain slim without deliberately exercising or anything, I just naturally led a very active lifestyle.

Now my posture is terrible from the years of breastfeeding/bending down for my child and I also now work at a computer whereas before I was a teacher. I really think regaining my strength and improving my posture is the thing that will make me feel better, more than losing the flab.

I don't really have time for bouldering any more. I have another hobby which is creative and more of a personal priority than fitness. I cycle to work, have done for years, I try to walk as much as possible but I'm also trying to train my son out of the pushchair so it means we're often going slowly. I have been trying to do planks whenever I remember but can only hold them for about 20/30 seconds. Is that good or bad? I do a front one and the sides. Is there anything else I could do to improve my strength/general fitness which could easily slot into my lifestyle.

I used to be attractive. Not mind blowingly gorgeous but I felt attractive and had attention, I would get dates easily. Men were interested. I left th...

Have you ever tried kettlebell workouts? I found a kettlebell trainer called Greg Brookes on instagram and he has a lot of free info on his website that is all about building strength. I suspect you'll find your strength will return quite quickly as you've clearly been very active till recently. The reason I suggest the kettlebell is that it's something you can do at home and is a short workout that really does work to build power quickly. It might get you started. I've been using my 6kg kettlebell for a week and can feel a difference already.

No I haven't. I actually don't even know what one is! But that sounds ideal. Something I could do during an episode of peppa pig or on a work from home lunch break is just the ticket. I'll look this up. Thank you.

Pilates to rebuild the stability as well as strength

Try Jillian Michaels

LGBirmingham · 27/06/2024 07:43

@Harrysmummy246 I have been recommended pilates by my cousin actually. I'm keen to try it. Do I need to go to a class or do you think it's safe to do at home? I used to yoga when I was younger and felt it was necessary having an instructor at least some of the time to check I wasn't going to injure myself doing it wrong.

A class would be good but there are plenty of you tube videos etc.
The principles seem to be exactly what you're looking for though

A 30 second plank is pretty good going.

Full body weight exercises such as press ups also require core strength so you could try those. Don’t do them from your knees - do a full body push up - like a high arm plank - but maybe start on an incline. If you have stairs at home, that’s a good way to develop core strength. Start by using about 5 or 6 stairs then as you get stronger keep going further down IYSWIM.

For me, the killer an exercise is a hollow hold for 60 seconds with my arms above my head. And I keep checking that my feet and head steamer centimetres off the ground. You really have to active deep core muscles for that.

I did pilates in a class. They also do online classes so they can instruct and correct you from the comfort of your own home, hotel etc

I won't post who the company is but inbox me if you want to know
