What kind of fitness do you do in a week?

I just looking at making my fitness routine a bit more interesting, so looking for inspiration!

For the last 3 years I've been weight training 5-6 times a week which I love.

I've just cut down to 4-5 days and added in a reformer pilates class.

Thinking about adding in something else... Yoga is a definite possibility, but looking for ideas of what else might be put there.

I HATE cardio 🤣 so running is out. I used to do a HIIT class which I did enjoy, but generally cardio is off the cards for me.

I'm not a big fan of team sports, but could maybe try. Pickleball is taking off around here but seems to attract a much older demographic (I'm mid 30s).

Climbing not for me as I have a fear of heights!

Would love something that continues to improve my strength as this is what I love.

Please tell me why your week looks like!

And of course this thread will not he representative. All the research shows that most middle aged women do absolutely nothing at all.

that is really interesting!

BitOutOfPractice · 24/05/2024 22:24

@FunnysInLaJardin nobody will cone on a thread like this saying “ I do nothing” yet all of my friends (50ish +) do nothing. So this thread is very biased

I used to do one yoga class every fortnight or so & the occasional short run, but a thread very like this one made me realise I needed to get serious about my fitness, hence signing up with my PT. Now I usually do about 3 hours of strength training, an hour of cardio & an hour of yoga per week. Thanks to the push from MN.

I strength train and love it too!

I mix that up with boxing which is great for cardio fitness and includes some leg, core and upper body conditioning. It is such a different pace and focus, I find it really complements my strength training.

I like Pilates and do it when recovering from illness or injury but I think I'd need a specialist class if I really wanted it to complement my strength training. And I do splits with strength, and need my rest days (whether whole body or eg upper) to be real rest days, so it doesn't work.

If you want to get stronger then optimise your strength training by not doing any strength on other days would be my advice. If you are doing it properly you need the recovery time and I wouldn't squander that for higher reps of lower intensity or weight in other classes (bar a bit of conditioning as with boxing but even then think it through).

Can I ask how many times a week you train? Maybe I'm doing too much and would benefit from an extra rest day or too 🤔 although I have to say I definitely notice a dip in my mood if I miss a day. I always have a great day if I've been to the gym!

Agree, most of my friends also do nothing! But I wanted to hear from people like me who LIKE to exercise and do things for their strength and fitness, so I don't mind that it's biased. I don't want advice from a couch potato 😂 that article you posted is very interesting though as I had no idea it was SO common for people to do nothing at all

If it helps, I do 3 gym sessions per week on Sundays, Wednesdays & Fridays & always have a protein snack as soon as I’ve finished - usually something like a sourdough roll with almond butter & feta. Yoga on Mondays & nothing on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

I don’t understand how people fit so much in! Ok fair enough if no/grown up dc & retired but what about family, friends, life? I was in the best shape of my life leading up to my wedding but my routine wasn’t anything like some on here.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:12

Currently I walk a lot, do yoga & Zumba once a week, and 1 weights session.

SabreIsMyFave · 24/05/2024 23:13

I do 5 or 6 three miles walks a week.

aintnospringchicken · 24/05/2024 23:20

Lots of walking
Pilates x 2
Dance aerobics x 1
Tennis x 1

I WFH 4 days a week & my gym’s just round the corner, so for weekday sessions I get there around 6.30am, come home & get ready for work. Admittedly though, I don’t have kids so that makes it easier.

True true.
As I said in my post, my sport has a big social side to it so I do have lots of very active friends, but I've made them through the sport if you know what I mean.

Loads of my other friends don't do much at all. I do feel fortunate that something I love is also very good for me physically and mentally.

I've just got on 15 yo at home. I wfh so no commute (and can also nip out for 45 min run and then sit in my kit and shower later). Or a 1hr bike ride in the evening.

DS2 will happily cook his evening meal if I'm out at a race on a week day evening. Give the boy a steak, that he can then eat in front of the telly or whatever and he's a happy lad!

Pollipops1 · 25/05/2024 00:06

@EmpressaurusOfCats considering no dc and p/t I don’t think you’re regime is difficult to fit in. But I’ve seen MNs posters say they have young dc, work f/ t and do 2 gym sessions/runs etc every day.

Pollipops1 · 25/05/2024 00:10

@CharlotteBog do you not struggle to fit in time with dc, other family, friends etc?

Pollipops1 · 25/05/2024 00:12

Sorry just saw you have friends through sport. I do my Zumba and yoga with a friend but I don’t class that as socialising as obviously we can’t chat through the class.

Pollipops1 · 25/05/2024 00:10

Not really.
I have only one child at home and we spend most evenings together. I usually collect him from the gym around 5.30pm and then there's a good 4hrs before he goes to bed (and he's in his room doing his own thing a lot anyway).

I don't tend to go out out much, more just locally to my book club or the pub.
Family are mostly at a distance that we only see each other at w/e so I suppose I don't see as much of them as I'd like. Same for a lot of my friends.

Maybe once in a fortnight I'll do something like go to a concert or cinema and then DS is happy to get his own meal (or I'll have prepared something), or he'll be with friends.

Ha ha yes. I meet a friend for a swim, which is a bit daft as we swim not chat. We do sometimes have a quick coffee before or after.
Bike rides with friends are lovely. Chats at running club tend to be a bit disjointed and ermm gaspy!

CharlotteBog · 25/05/2024 00:24

...and I'm a night owl so get the house jobs done with my audio book around 10pm.

spiderslart · 25/05/2024 00:26

Per week

3-5 x depending on how I feel) weights. CG - currently doing Intent

2 x ballet classes

1-2 runs - but only maximum 5k. I don't enjoy running but I feel it improves my general stamina

I have a class pass membership too, so depending on how busy my week is I'll do a class or two of barre Pilates, step, dance or yoga.

Theoldwoman · 25/05/2024 00:26

I swim 3-5 times a week.
Gym usually twice a week.
A class twice a week - Pilates, yoga usually.
I walk the dog twice a day - sometimes hike.
i walk every evening with my neighbour who is 80, we walk for around 45 minutes.
