What kind of fitness do you do in a week?

I just looking at making my fitness routine a bit more interesting, so looking for inspiration!

For the last 3 years I've been weight training 5-6 times a week which I love.

I've just cut down to 4-5 days and added in a reformer pilates class.

Thinking about adding in something else... Yoga is a definite possibility, but looking for ideas of what else might be put there.

I HATE cardio 🤣 so running is out. I used to do a HIIT class which I did enjoy, but generally cardio is off the cards for me.

I'm not a big fan of team sports, but could maybe try. Pickleball is taking off around here but seems to attract a much older demographic (I'm mid 30s).

Climbing not for me as I have a fear of heights!

Would love something that continues to improve my strength as this is what I love.

Please tell me why your week looks like!

I’ve just added swimming into my mix. Might that work for you?

I love running - run 3-4 times a week. I aim for 2 body pump sessions a week, but that often gets knocked off course by work, which is one reason I’m adding the swimming (that and my Garmin telling me I need more low aerobic training!)

EmpressaurusOfCats · 23/05/2024 06:31

3 weight & cardio sessions & 1 yoga class per week, a session with my personal trainer once a fortnight to check in & keep me focused. It feels like a good balance.

PaminaMozart · 23/05/2024 06:36

I work out with Caroline Girvan (weights/dumbbells) and Growingannanas (HIIT) for 60-75 minutes most days.

Plus the Bowflex 3 minute plank and a dozen or so push-ups every day.

Crushed23 · 23/05/2024 06:41

I absolutely love exercise, it’s a huge part of my life. I do around 7 classes a week:

3x barre
3x HIIT
1-2x yoga

I was running 2-3 times a week last summer, which I am going to start doing again, and drop one HIIT class.

I’ve always thought consistency is more important than variety. Find what you love and stick to it.

unsync · 23/05/2024 06:49

Four mat pilates sessions a week here. If you are looking to build strength, mat pilates with (or without) equipment will do it. You really need to focus on getting the moves and breathwork right first and then progress through the levels. It gets intense though! Your hips will love it. 😁

cavernclub · 23/05/2024 06:56

I've done all the classes mentioned above ... but have recently discovered Zumba. It's taken by a Colombian lady and goodness, it's quite difficult to do properly. I was a bit dismissive of it (not sure why now!) but it's really enjoyable and I love that Latin American beat. It's a proper workout for the hips and waist too if you do it right. It's also cardio and I'm not a runner, so it's good for me

florenceandthemac · 23/05/2024 11:19

Strength training 3-4x a week (upper and lower body splits)
Running 2-3x a week for steady state cardio (although can't currently run so I am power walking)
Pilates 1-2x a week for my core
I try to throw in a few complementary HIIT workouts on either the rower or stairmaster, only 15 mins each

henlake7 · 23/05/2024 13:45

weights/cardio x3 wk.
pilates/cardio x2 wk.
run x3 wk.
rebound x2 wk.
Im not much of a group exerciser, I prefer to do my own thing. Also TBH most of my /cardio is only there because I have various shows lined up on Netflix to watch with it!!😄

massistar · 23/05/2024 14:04

I do 2 circuit type classes a week, 1 netball match, 1 run club session, a tennis session and a 5k run. Probably a bit cardio heavy and I know I should really do some yoga or Pilates. I tried pickleball and it wasn't for me. Definitely an older demographic as there's not much movement. Have you tried Padel tennis? It's great fun. Rounders also getting big round my way !

Travellingislife · 23/05/2024 16:01

I used to love weightlifting but at the moment I’m a bit bored of it so I’m doing running, cycling, swimming and I’ve also started playing tennis. I’m still doing about 3h a week of weights as I think it’s important for health but it’s not my focus now.
I used to do a lot of CrossFit too, have you tried it?
Oh and I’ve started to do yoga and meditation classes, they have done wonders for my mental health!

buffyslayer · 23/05/2024 16:05

Netball once a week which I love
Peloton - spin and weights, I try and do 3 classes a week but depends on health conditions
Used to do pole and aerial hoop

buffyslayer · 23/05/2024 16:06

Oh and river/reservoir swimming in summer

Bananaapplemelon · 23/05/2024 20:00

Thanks so much everyone, some new ideas here!

I've done zumba a couple of times but just felt like an uncoordinated idiot 😂 would love to get into some kind of dance but way too self conscious.

Barre sounds like it could be something I'd enjoy, and would complement my strength training.

I'm terrible at swimming (can only do breaststroke with my head above the water, so again I feel self conscious). And our local pool is freezing 😂

I'll definitely look into mat pilates, as I could probably just do this at home or at the gym with an online video.

Thanks again all, lots to think about!

Half decent harrier/club runner here so probably not what you want…
Monday: AM - 20/30 min swim (very slow)
PM: short recovery run (very slow, around 30 minutes) decent 15/20 minute stretch/yoga.

Tuesday: Speed session for running - anywhere from 4-9 miles depending on what the session is.
Always do a strength session on my session days as it means I can keep my easy days properly easy

Wednesday: Slow social run

Thursday: tempo session for running (longer reps than the speed session so they are done slower) again, 4-9 miles.
again another strength session

Friday: no running will go for a swim in the evening.

Saturday: parkrun with a mile or two either side

Sunday: Long run, or a race!

YorkNew · 24/05/2024 16:43

2 different aqua aerobics classes.

VelvetKimono · 24/05/2024 16:45

I’m in my fifties, did a lot of weight training, now do a little bit, but am addicted to Muay Thai after starting last year!

I also did boxing training before, and loved that.

Gottleogear · 24/05/2024 17:41

I go to the gym virtually every day but to be fair, I'm retired and go in the mornings.

Spin x 4 per week
Body Pump x 2
HIIT x 3
Circuits x 2
5 or 6k run x 3 or sometimes 4
10k run x 1 outside, weather permitting

Probably doing too much but I love it and really feel the benefits Smile

Radish12 · 24/05/2024 17:48

I'm a member of a council gym which has a Les Mills licence (I think that's how it works) so in a week I do one each of:

LM Shapes
LM Body Pump
Pilates
Omnia
Parkrun 5k run/walk

Sometimes a bit of Yoga With Adriene (youtube) at home if I can be bothered or am feeling particularly stiff.

I would LOVE to get into Muay Thai or some kind of MMA! Sadly I don't think we have anything locally

Tae Kwon Do x 1
Kick boxing x 2
Power Yoga x 1- 2
Run x 1

CharlotteBog · 24/05/2024 21:53

My love is running so I try and do that 3 times a week. I've had a series of daft injuries in the last 6 months though.

Anyway, I swim at Monday lunch time and do a strength class in the evening.
Tuesday is running club.
Thursday is also running club but I'm not up to the distance yet (due to the injuries).
Another run at the weekend or more recently I've been going along to the long bike ride with the cycle club.

There are some (run) races peppered about so I arrange my week around those.

I am a lone parent and my youngest is now old enough for me to do all these things. I wfh in a sedentary job and my sport is also a big part of my social life.

In earlier years I'd do my sport during the working day as I couldn't get out in the evening.

I love to be outside (even my strength class is outside in the warmer months).

I do some open water swimming but that's more for the buzz and camaraderie as I'm rarely in the water long enough to do any meaningful exercise!

On rest days I will go for a walk around the fields.

I'm 53, just reached menopause so mixing it all up is good I think. I used to just do lots and lots of road running.

MsMartini · 24/05/2024 21:55

I strength train and love it too!

I mix that up with boxing which is great for cardio fitness and includes some leg, core and upper body conditioning. It is such a different pace and focus, I find it really complements my strength training.

I like Pilates and do it when recovering from illness or injury but I think I'd need a specialist class if I really wanted it to complement my strength training. And I do splits with strength, and need my rest days (whether whole body or eg upper) to be real rest days, so it doesn't work.

If you want to get stronger then optimise your strength training by not doing any strength on other days would be my advice. If you are doing it properly you need the recovery time and I wouldn't squander that for higher reps of lower intensity or weight in other classes (bar a bit of conditioning as with boxing but even then think it through).

CormorantStrikesBack · 24/05/2024 21:57

Walk the dog 3 miles a day.
spin class at least twice a week, ideally 3x.
2-3 weight lifting sessions a week
1 long bike ride at weekends, sometimes 2.
my Pilates teacher has packed it in so currently trying to do a YouTube video once a week but it’s a bit ad hoc.

Running - consciously 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes each
walking outside - part of everyday life but at least 20 minutes a day
weights: 2/3 times a week

i think demonising cardio now is as dangerous as ruling out lifting used to be. Both are important .
