People who say that exercise is boring

People who say that exercise is "too boring": my prejudice is to guess is they spend a lot of time watching tv or scrolling social media or watching paint dry... Things I would find too boring. I'm wrong, right? Tell me about how you find exercise "too boring" and what purposeful or constructive activities you are doing instead with the same time you could have exercised.

Or maybe "too boring" actually means "too tiring and I need brain dead time instead" (xx) which I could completely understand needing. But too tiring is not what some posters say. They specifically say "boring."

(xx) or some other thing that doesn't mean too boring but people choose the wrong words.

Ah so this thread is really more about your tired, bored, lazy gaming teenagers than anything else?

geoger · 24/03/2024 11:12

I love exercise that has a goal and involves going somewhere- it’s why I love running. Come rain or shine or wind or snow I’m out there running. I change my routes, set myself challenges based on time or speed or distance.
I hate organised exercise like going to gym classes or having to use the machines at the gym. The only exception to this, for me, is Pilates- I don’t find that boring at all.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/03/2024 11:12

Exercise for exercise sake is boring, tedious and a waste of time for me. I do get that some people enjoy it as something to do. eg my Dh loves to walk - just ramble around, for the sake of walking. I hate that.
So I choose to ‘exercise’ as part of my everyday so I walk to the shops etc, I have a physical job, I garden and clean, we used to have dogs I walked - so I am achieving something whilst doing the ‘exercise’. My one concession to dedicated exercise is swimming - but even then I do it whilst listening to an audiobook not as a stand-alone activity!

Very much find excercise dull. I get my kicks from crafting and I'm yet to find an exercise I can do whilst stitching.

I presume people who get excited from lifting things repetitively several times a week must be creatively quite shallow. Wink

Crafting and stitching? I literally cannot think of anything more boring, show me a gym or a running track and I would be very happy.

crazyaginglady · 24/03/2024 11:13

In my limited spare time I’d rather be knitting, gardening, reading, seeing friends. I like cycling in the countryside but that’s less about the exercise and more about getting outdoors. Running is so so dull, the gym is a soulless hole and not engaging in anyway. I can’t believe you can’t see how it might be boring. But then as others have said, they’d find crafts boring. Isn’t this just a case of people liking different things?

why does it matter to you

Actually I'm also intrigued why some people can only go running if they have music or podcasts to listen to. Why is someone like me content enough with my own thoughts and the outside views while running, while others find themselves bored witless without the music in their ears. I wouldn't listen at all if I tried to run with music in my ears.

That said, I have become reliant on listening to music while at work; it makes me more productive. And I don't know why, I used to work in silence perfectly easily. Something about dopamine receptors changed, but only in that context for me.

Swimming lengths can be boring for sure but it doesn't take too long so I can stomach that boredom. And I'm lucky to get a great high after swimming.

I know people who spend huge amounts of time gaming, scrolling or watching TV, these are common pasttimes. Not because of disability or tired out from rest of life, just out of habit. I don't think anyone on MN would say that there exists no one who ever wastes too much time gaming, time they could have spent much more productively in some other way....

(or maybe I'm the only parent of teenagers on MN, possibly)

Good for you! Where would you like us to post your medal?

TinkerTiger · 24/03/2024 11:13

Have you nothing better to do on a Sunday morning? Like exercise?

mirl · 24/03/2024 11:14

What a weird thing to get so worked up about. You sound insufferable. And yes I find exercise 'too boring'. And I find people who like to talk about how much exercise they do boring as well. No one actually cares how much you go to the gym or how you think it makes you better than others. Funnily enough in life people like doing different things! Imagine that!
There are thousands of other things people enjoy. Myself, I spend my free time creatively, painting, gardening, walking, reading, out with my children, out with friends. And you know what sometimes I do enjoy a bit of doom scrolling and trashy tv. Because there's absolutely bugger all wrong with that. And I probably am a little bit fat, and I don't care because I hate exercising/gym more than I hate being a bit chubby!

Why is someone like me content enough with my own thoughts

It's because you're so amazing OP

I spend a couple of hours most evenings playing games on my phone. I enjoy it. Yes it is a ‘waste of time’. It’s perfectly ok for people to waste time if they want to. Every minute of every day does not have to be spent doing something useful or constructive. By that time of the evening, I’ve done my day’s work, done some housework, done my exercise, cooked dinner, walked the dog etc etc. What do you think I should be doing with my couple of free hours in the evening? Perhaps it would make you happier if I were doing cross stitch or watercolour painting but unfortunately I find arts and crafts very boring and I’m completely hamfisted so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Because you are the most special OP, congratulations 🤩

Because people are different. Hope this helps!

easylikeasundaymorn · 24/03/2024 11:19

I find it weird when people say all, or even most exercise is boring. There are so many things out there that would count as exercise - how can windsurfing or abseiling ever be considered boring? Absolutely could understand why they might not be things people don't want to do but boring? There are loads of types of exercise I don't/wouldn't find enjoyable because they were pointless, too tiring, too hard, but not boring exactly.

Besides which, lots of the exercises people seem to think are boring because they are repetitive you could do the 'brain dead' things OP suggests people prefer at the same time, if you do them in the gym rather than outside. God knows most of the people (mainly men) at my gym spend 95% on their phone or chatting to their mates, 5% lifting weights (and yes I know about recovery time, but sitting for half an hour hogging a machine while not using it is not that!)

But then I don't ever get bored so am probably not the right person to ask. Not that I think I'm inherently fascinating 😂 just that I live a lot in my head. I often listen to music/podcasts while walking/jogging, but like OP am equally happy just observing my surroundings and thinking about things in my own head. I also do this when cleaning/in a boring meeting/driving long distances, etc.

Ironically the only time I get close to boredom is when I'm chatting with someone who is talking about something I don't find interesting but have to stay engaged enough in the conversation that I can't drift off into my own dreamworld.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/03/2024 11:20

So not only are you inexplicably annoyed that some people find exercise boring, you now also want to pass judgement on how people make exercise less boring for themselves?

Is it ok with you if everyone just carries on as they are? I think that would be best really.

Chewbecca · 24/03/2024 11:21

When I played a team sport, exercise was far from boring, I really looked forward to, and enjoyed it.

I can't play any more and, other than walking, the only exercise I do is in the pool & I do find it boring, yes. Repetitive, doesn't stimulate my mind at all. There are many, many things I would rather do, and yes that does include scrolling through MN or watching a good show on the telly. I exercise solely because it's good for me.

CaterhamReconstituted · 24/03/2024 11:21

I find it boring. I understand it’s important though.

Malarandras · 24/03/2024 11:24

Why a whole thread for something that can be very explained by the fact that we are not all the same? Are you having some sort of crisis? Or are you just incredibly bored this weekend?

Yeah I don't really get what answer the OP wants to this? Because your thoughts are better than our dull thoughts? I spend 16 hours a day having to listen to the shit going on in my head. If I can zone out and listen to music or a podcast for an hour while I go for a run I'll take it. I'm not that interesting that I want to listen to myself all day every day.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 24/03/2024 11:27

I hate exercise. Hate group exercise. Not motivated by solo exercise. Hate sports, mostly. Hate feeling sweaty or smelly. I find exercise for exercise-sake utterly pointless.

So the only way I get moving off the sofa is any exercise that has a purpose, or that I can integrate into my day. So I walk to the supermarket and back, which is hilly, about 20 minutes each way, to top up my food shop, instead of taking the bus. I'm lucky in that my job is busy and I'm on my feet a lot. I intend to ride a bike to work and to do errands, again, instead of taking the bus. (I don't drive) If there is an event locally I will see if I can walk there. I like walking around country houses and their grounds. Love a big museum or park. All these places have things to see or have purpose so that's where I get active.

I've tried going to the gym, doing dancing, aerobics all of that and I never stick at it because it's BORING.

I have adhd - the music or podcast helps me focus and ignore the 27 other things my brain is shouting at me.

Cockapoopoopoo · 24/03/2024 11:31

Depends on the exercise for me. Running, for example, I would prefer to watch paint dry

TextureSeeker · 24/03/2024 11:31

Weirdly enough most people find fitting a spot of abseiling or windsurfing in between work and school runs and making dinner and cleaning up etc rather difficult so they tend to do something that only requires them to put on their trainers and run out the door or go to the gym for an hour. Maybe you live somewhere where you can run out the door and abseil then be able to pick your kids up from scouts in an hour but most people don't.

exerciseshmexercise · 24/03/2024 11:32

To be clear, I'm not running I'm walking - but the use of music or podcasts to help focus for people with adhd is an actual thing. I'm actually pissed off at the amount of ableism in your posts OP. Not everyone is the same as you. People are different. Some people are even disabled. Is this actually news to you?

colouredball · 24/03/2024 11:33

I guess we are all just lesser beings.

Well done OP - you are fucking amazing going for a run without music 👏👏👏

Lemoncokezero · 24/03/2024 11:35

Things I would find too boring

It's as if people are different? This is a genuine question, what is going on in your life, brain or personality to think you have the right to ask people to justify themselves to you. Unbelievably strange as an Outlook. Threads like this actually make me worry about what people are like out in the world.
