Sadly, the British media will probably not be even a fraction as interested as they are in a mainstream sport such as football.
As I’ve said, I have competed successfully in the equestrian version of the Barkley, and even the horsey magazines don’t want to know - it’s too niche. It makes more of a one-off ‘human interest’ story than a sports story. It needs to be carried along by its followers and supporters, which is being done magnificently here and across the internet. It is amazing how many people now know the names of Jasmin, Jared, etc despite not having seen them in mainstream media. Their achievements are far more incredible than those of any footballer I can imagine, yet tomorrow the sports pages will still be full of footballers.
A Small European Woman is of massive interest to other women - how does she do it? Go Jasmin, finish this run for all the women cheering you on, do something no woman has done before! Once she’s done this, she’ll be back home to work and children, and be obscure until the next time she does something amazing, and that just isn’t enough for mainstream press.
And that just says all you need to know about sport in the media - it’s not really for us. It’s for the men. Which makes, as has already been observed, it all the more lovely that she is supported, assisted, and welcomed as an equal by some clearly very lovely men in the ultra world.
Certainly for her achievement in completing this race I would vote for Jasmin for SPOTY, but there would need to be a concerted effort to even get her name on the page to start with.
