Feeling like shit after body pump class 😔

I've been once or twice before but haven't been in ages so basically starting again. I was really nervous going, as never done weights before. Tonight was a different instructor, who was lovely but kept constantly correcting me in the class by calling my name out or coming over to me. At the end of the class she came over to show me a few lifts and to explain how to do it and what I was doing wrong. Even when showing me one to one I couldn't get my posture right, she was being nice but I did sense frustration. I think I was just overwhelmed and flustered by this point and wanted to go. I don't have the best co ordination and I'm alot heavier then I used to be. I just feel so embarrassed 😥

God our body pump teacher was so bloody fast they wouldn't have time to correct anyone.
Try not to take it personally as she is just trying to prevent you getting injured.

There are tons of other classes, keep trying different things until you find something you enjoy.

I love body combat but can't do Sh'Bam for the life of me.

Exercise should be fun .

Anklespraying · 31/05/2023 22:29

Try an online subscription. Much better

Pootle40 · 31/05/2023 22:29

Don't give up ! The instructor will have been trying to help so it was easier for you next time and also to avoid your causing yourself an injury.

Honestly doing that first class was the biggest hurdle. Well done

MoMandaS · 31/05/2023 22:31

Sorry you had that experience. She might have been concerned about potential injury but should have been more discreet. I used to go to the classes but these days I either do them on the TV (les mills subscription) or replicate the moves in the gym. Maybe either of those might work better for you?

dementedpixie · 31/05/2023 22:35

Maybe try a different instructor. The instructors are never like that in my classes. They might say to the class in general about posture or technique but don't pinpoint specific people or come over to them.

(There has been one instructor who has covered a couple of classes who touched my bar during the chest track and I wasn't impressed) . They're supposed to stay at the front of the class not wander about.

Londonlassy · 31/05/2023 22:36

It is really important to have good technique or you will injure yourself. Completely understand how stressful it would have been in the Pump class being corrected throughout. I had terrible technique with using weights and ended up having a couple of personal training sessions to improve it. Is this a possibility for you?

gotitgoingon · 31/05/2023 22:42

IME good Les Mill instructors don't call anyone out specifically but will make a point of, e.g. turning to the side to model correct technique and giving instructions like 'lock your core' to everyone rather than pointing someone out specifically.

I have been going to BP for ages and went to a class that was covered by someone recently who was so overweight she could not tie her shoelaces. I think it's important that we see all types of body in the gym so thought initially that she was great when she walked in.

However, within about 5 minutes of the class starting she was dropping her bar and singling people out, standing next to them to show them where they were going on and it was quite clear it was because she could not actually keep up with the physical demands of the class itself.

It's humiliating to hone in on one person, I've been going ages and also do PT so know what I'm doing but when she was at the front she was jabbing her finger at the person behind me lecturing them and that made me feel self conscious even though it wasn't me she was talking to.

Try a different class/instructor it's not you.

Also - I have ADHD and I can only follow gym classes by mirror imaging what happens in front of me so someone shouting vocal instructions or standing alongside me won't help at all.

SallyWD · 31/05/2023 22:43

I had exactly this at a yoga class I went to. The instructor seemed to spend half the lesson correcting what I was doing. It was in front of several of my colleagues and I was so embarrassed! I never went back.
I know they mean well but these people should realise how uncomfortable it can make you feel to repeatedly be singled out.

Meltinthemiddle · 31/05/2023 22:46

Thank you, obviously lots of information is thrown at you during the class and not always possible to see what.is going on. She said for me to go back next week, so I feel a bit pressure now 😔. I just felt a bit stupid when she was showing me at the end and for some reason just couldn't process it, because she mentioned my knees during the class I just kept thinking I need to bend my knees during the dead lift and overthinking everything. Maybe I could practice in the mirror, I did feel embarrassed.

She’s trying to help you so you don’t get injured. She sounds like a bloody amazing instructor taking the time out to help you get it right. A lot would just leave you be and then you would get injured. You see terrible form in body pump classes all the time. Go back next week and keep doing it and your form will improve over time and practice. Don’t be embarrassed. Everyone starts somewhere. I wish someone had helped me like that when I first started.

Deadlift is a funny move to get the hang off at the beginning, even though it's very easy to do once you know it. It's hinge movement which we don't tend to do all that much of in every day life so it's ok for it to feel weird.

You can get a 7 day free trial of Les Mills on demand and have a practice between now and the next class but don't feel pressured to go back if you don't want to, there must be other teachers/gyms?

Meltinthemiddle · 31/05/2023 22:53

Thank you, I will go back and she does seem nice and was trying to help. Just felt a bit rubbish and annoyed with myself. I'm not sure I'm cut out for these classes as never seem to be able to follow or copy what they are doing.

I would tell her how this experience made you feel. I would say that you appreciate her guidance and expertise, but you were made to feel very self-conscious being singled out so many times in a class environment. She definitely could have handled helping you much more discreetly.

dementedpixie · 31/05/2023 23:01

One instructor describes a deadlift as hingeing St the hi

dementedpixie · 31/05/2023 23:02

One instructor i go to describes a deadlift as hingeing at the hip to peer over a cliff. You have a softness in your knees

Which move were you finding most difficult?

MrsSucculent · 31/05/2023 23:05

Please try again. After 3-4 sessions you will nail it and you’ll feel amazing! It doesn’t take long x

Roomsharing · 31/05/2023 23:13

In a body pump class you’re covering so many different lifts/ exercises to cover all of the main muscle groups - if you were following a weights programme in the gym, you’d usually do this over 2 or 3 sessions. Coupled with trying to fit it in with the timings of the music, it’s A LOT to take in!

Please don’t feel daft or self conscious that your technique wasn’t perfect or if you found it difficult to follow everything the instructor was saying, because you’re not the only one who will have felt like this doing a body pump class.

Give it a few sessions (and maybe practice a couple of the exercises in between, with a really light weight ( or even just the bar)) and see how you feel after that.

It’s been a while since a did a class but I’ve been having PT sessions for the last few years and I still get pulled up on my form, particularly on deadlifts, as I start to fatigue!

MadCatLady27 · 31/05/2023 23:14

I did a pump class once - think it was an intro one so you'd think it would be known people may not have perfect technique

The instructor kept telling me I was doing it wrong too, I get they're trying to prevent injuries but the fact it was in front of everyone in a freaking intro class put me right off

bonzaitree · 31/05/2023 23:14

She probably didn’t want you hurting yourself.

if you perform moves incorrectly then you can do yourself serious mischief.

Practice with a broom in the mirror at home. Look online for body pump tutorials. Please don’t give up as the instructor was trying to help you so you can get the best out of the class.

Good luck for next week as I know you will be feeling nervous.

Meltinthemiddle · 31/05/2023 23:17

It was the dead lift I struggling with, I think I was bending my knees and dropping the bar past them. I couldn't quite get the sticking my hips out or rolling the bar.

OP posts:
Housenoob · 31/05/2023 23:19

All the moves in Body Pump are standard workout moves e.g. Deadlifts, squats etc. Definitely go on YouTube to look up videos for techniques on how to do them and practice in the mirror, without weights.

I still cringe at remembering my first time, my squats and lunges must have looked SO ridiculous but nothing the instructor said got through to me, because I didn't understand what I was or wasn't doing until I saw myself do it in the mirror.

gotitgoingon · 31/05/2023 23:20

There's very little chance of a proper injury if the teacher is instructing beginners to use light weights as they should be when they are starting out.

OP, deadlift just takes a bit of getting used to because for injury prevention in daily life we are taught to bend our knees when we pick up heavy things and that's not actually the action for a deadlift.

Deadlift is only in the warm up and back track just keep your weight light and concentrate on having soft (so not locked out) but not squatted knees and hinge from your hip.

dementedpixie · 31/05/2023 23:22

Hinge from the hip, soft knees rather than bent and keep the bar in contact with your thighs. Let your bum stick out

Bunce1 · 31/05/2023 23:25

Deadlift- send your hips to the back and keep a flat back, you should feel it in your hamstrings and if you face a mirror side on you should look like a number 7. Your back should not round so play around with your shoulder blades and how to hold them. Slight bend in the knee-
so don’t lock out your legs super straight. But you’re not bending with knees as such if that makes sense?

I find when I start a new class or routine I look for the best person in the class and copy them. Sometimes I will wait for a couple of reps watching and then join in or use a very low weight to get the moves right before coping with a suitably heavy weight.

Next class- get there early and pick a good spot, tell the teacher you were happy for the corrections but you felt self conscious so you’re going to go low weights this week and have a go.

I FORBID YOU NOT TO RETURN. You’re going to smash it and love it and the first week is always a shitter.
