High protein yoghurt that isn't full of rubbish/sugar?

tulips27 · 04/02/2023 08:42

A physio has recommended me to have high-protein yoghurt after exercising. The trouble is, all the ones I looked at have added sugar which I'm sure makes them taste lovely but I can't have them. Bizarrely, the small pouch-type ones that seem aimed at exercisers seem to have the most added stuff.

Could anyone recommend one that doesn't have added sugar? Especially a pouch type one that I could take to the gym.

I have total 5% and two scoops of unflavoured organic protein powder.

Ooh, if you know what brand it is off the top of your head could you let me know please?

Thanks @MyFlagMeansIceCream , the re-usable pouches look ideal.

Just buy plain Greek yoghurt like Fage and put protein powder in it. Then maybe some fruit to give it some taste or a dollop of honey. You can also put ground almonds in it instead of protein powder if you like.
Creating your own yoghurt is always better as you know what’s in it.
I personally think that fat-free products taste awful so I would buy the full-fat Fage. We need fat in our diet so don’t skip it. Cut out sugar but never the fat.

M&S Natural Skyr is the highest in protein that I’ve found. It’s 12.2g per 100g. It’s sligthly runnier than other skyrs so would prob do well with added protein powder.

Lidl and Aldi do great protein puddings which are low sugar and have 20g protein.

eighteenthirteen · 04/02/2023 09:30

Arla protein

What about plain quark that can then be flavoured. I love it and use it in sweet and savoury stuff.

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2023 09:42

Kefir, specifically Biotiful kefir yogurt (high protein, with quark).

It’s really good.

Try stirring some skimmed milk powder into Fage Greek Yoghurt. Skimmed milk powder is my (not so) secret protein weapon at the moment!

The Healthy Tree Company from Amazon.

Inspired by this thread, I've just mixed a scoop of unflavoured pure whey powder into Fage 5% greek yoghurt and mixed it really well. It was surprisingly nice! I mixed in chopped grapes. It almost had a custardy flavour.

The Lindahls Kvarg range is really delicious.

lljkk · 04/02/2023 17:57

@tulips27 , what benefit does the physio say you'll get by having the high protein hit after exercise? Or how do you hope it will be good for you.

lljkk · 04/02/2023 21:27

I tried to answer my own question, and came up with the claim that having protein after exercise was "essential" for "optimal muscle health". So I googled OMH but I'm not sure what it means. Some sources seem to basically say OMH = "enough to have mobility". Harvard implies that OMH = "strength." or "enough muscle". So... "optimal muscle health" equals, "enough muscle to do stuff you want to do" ?

Enough muscle to do what you want to do doesn't sound like it would require high protein snacks, in general.

Fifiellz · 04/02/2023 21:29

Are the Lindhals Kvarg ones no
good? They are quark rather than yogurt but taste amazing.

greenkitten2 · 04/02/2023 21:32

Yes to the Lindhals kvarg!

Scarydinosaurs · 04/02/2023 21:39

The Aldi one is in a pouch, lots of protein and not too much sugar.

alternatively, I do powder mixed in with plain Greek yog and add grapes etc

sunflower seeds in it is also nice.

Heyboooo · 04/02/2023 21:56

Aldi have their own 0% yogurt, similar tub to Fage. It’s 10g of protein per 100g which is pretty good?

Heyboooo · 04/02/2023 21:57

Also the Aldi/Lidl pouches are good. Unsure of sugar content but usually 25g of protein per pouch which is pretty good, for something like 79p

Chesneyhawkes1 · 04/02/2023 22:03

I have the Kvarg ones. Are they no good? I use it in my porridge too.

Georgiarule · 04/02/2023 22:13

The Aldi ones

I agree that full fat yoghurt is preferable, especially Greek yoghurt.

However, if the main aim is to eat protein, why not have a couple of boiled eggs? They are not called protein bombs for nothing!

whytesnow · 05/02/2023 02:31

Can you not just add protein powder to Greek yogurt?

BlueHeelers · 06/02/2023 20:25

Another one chiming in to say Fage yoghurt. I used to eat the 0% fat one, but I've switched to the 5% fat one, and have it with mixed seeds, mixed nuts, and fruit - a chopped up pear, or frozen mango chunks (Iceland does great ones!) It's like ice cream! Delicious. And a quarter of the calories.

brooksghost · 06/02/2023 20:42

Does it have to be yoghurt?
A few chunks of cheese or 2 Babybel (easy to carry about) will give protein.
