50+ what exercise do you do?

Inspired by a thread on AIBU, I'd like to understand from fellow over 50's what exercise they do. Interested to see if my activity is above average and whether I should be doing other stuff. I tend to gravitate towards what I enjoy more as that means I'll keep up with it. Conscious I should probably do some weight training but I find it boring. So here's what I do in a typical week.

At least two swims of at least 1k
2-3 45 minute spin classes, one of which is followed by a slightly shorter swim
A 30 minute dog walk most days

I have a gym membership so could do anything - lots of classes available.

What do you do?

Earlyish 60s. Walk between 40 & 50 miles a week. I have walking friends so some of this is also my social life.

About 10 minutes of random exercises a day, sit ups, that sort of thing.

A short run once or twice a week. Lots of gardening (does that count?) Various other bits and bobs such as paddle boarding and cycling.

No videos or classes, neither appeal to me. I might consider yoga if I had time but still running a busy business.

Looking at female relatives and my body's own inclination, I am probably naturally a size 14 or 16. I feel so much healthier as a size 8 and prioritise my nutrition and activity. I think as women get older it becomes more and more important.

A size 8 is tiny at 60+. Most women I know at 80 who are that small are also very frail.

Run 5K 3 times a week
Brisk walk 5 days a week
Tennis or squash 3 times a week
Average 14000 steps a day
I’m conscious that I need to improve my upper body strength but feel fit

I would love to do this much running but with work I'd struggle to find the time. Will def try to do more tho!

Early 60s. I do 3 or 4 swims a week of 1100 or 1200m, depending how early I arrive; walk between 3-6 miles per day 5 days a week plus two longer walks of 8-9 miles.

I should probably do some weights but I get too tired if I do.

Are you still working full time too? It's time I struggle with!

Gordonsgrin · 02/02/2023 21:57

Work full time. 54 years old.
run x3
weight training/circuit class 2 or 3 times per week
1 yoga class
a few solo yoga sessions on my own

PushthechocolateButton · 02/02/2023 22:01

@GordonShakespearedoesChristmas I run at 6am, getting out of bed is tough but once I’ve got my kit on I already feel good

PottyLotty22 · 02/02/2023 22:11

I am 51.
Mornings: Swim 2000m 7 days a week
Evenings: Gum 7 days a week. I do a mixture of cardio, bodypump and strenght and conditioning.

At the weekends I also cycle and walk a lot.

I work full time. I prioritise fitness. My children are late teens/ early twenties. I don’t watch tv ever.

gonnabeok · 02/02/2023 22:16

I run 6 marathons a week and work full time🤣🤣🤣🌟

RedAppleTree · 02/02/2023 22:19

15 mins of strength and stretching exercises at home.
Walk everywhere.
Started doing pole dance classes again, what a shock, so hard!

VastQuantities · 02/02/2023 22:21

I'm 55. I swam 63km in January. 2-5km per session, 3-4 times per week.
As well as swimming, I do 2 Body Pump (weight) sessions and a stretch class every week. Over the year, I average 10,400 steps a day. That's not high but walking isn't my exercise....
I've just gone into the overweight BMI Confused

WordleInTwo · 02/02/2023 22:25

58 years.

3 x 6 mile walks

2 x 1 mile swims

1 x 90 minute gym circuit

VastQuantities · 02/02/2023 22:26

But my metabolic age is 40, allegedly.

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/02/2023 22:30

I speed walk around 40 miles a week and lift weights about 4 times a week. A bit of skipping. The odd run. I'm 54 this year.

Ohifyouinsist · 02/02/2023 22:32

Weekly:
1 yoga class
1 online old school aerobics class
4 or 5 walks of about 4 miles (in the hills) for 6 months of the year
4 or 5 30 minute walks the rest of the year

FlowerArranger · 02/02/2023 22:36

I work out at home, 6 days a week, plus an active rest day (walking).

Typically:
Stretches, hip flexor exercises and jumping jacks to warm up, or Rebecca's Stretch workout
Then either Caroline Girvan (dumbbell workouts) or Growingannanas HIIT (alternate days)
Bowflex 3-minute plank - every single day (unless I decide to do Caroline's 15 minute plank)
Then either: Rebecca Louise's Best Abs, or one of her arm workouts (Ageless Arms or Bingo Wings), or Lucy Wyndham Reed's Thighs & Glutes
Cooldown stretches

Total 60-90 minutes

I try to run but don't enjoy it very much, so maybe 10 minutes once a week. But I cycle a fair bit (only if the weather is nice). Try to go for a walk most days, often wearing wrist and ankle weights.

Eating healthy: mostly Mediterranean diet, i.e. lots of vegetables and a moderate amount of lean protein. No UPF and virtually no sugar or refined carbs. Try not to drink calories - mostly succeed during the week. Try not to succumb to my icecream addiction...

SUMMARY - the workouts that make most difference for me:
Anything by Caroline Girvan
Lucy's Thighs
Rebecca's Abs
Bowflex plank
Plus wearing wrist and ankle weights when walking

TheClitterati · 02/02/2023 22:44

Sea swim between 1-5 times a week. In summer I swim across the bay & back but in winter just 10-15 min of gentle breaststroke.

2 x 20 minute pool swims a week. I'm slowly building up strength in front crawl after shoulder injury.

2-3 yoga classes a week.

I'd like to do a weights programme a couple of times a week but haven't figured out where to fit it in yet.

Lazy moo! What do you on the 7th day? 😬

FlowerArranger · 02/02/2023 22:52

Forgot to mention I'm mid-60s and retired, which is why I have the time.

When I was still working I was self-employed, meaning that I was either frantically busy or twiddling my thumbs, so my exercise schedule was all over the place. There were times I managed little besides walking the dog and doing the Bowflex 3-minute plank.

I also love skiing - one of the reasons I'm so invested in exercising. Hoping to continue skiing for at least another 20 years 🙏

ivykaty44 · 02/02/2023 22:54

6 days of hitt, metcon, boxing type stuff 6am class every day
cycling, various amounts dependent on weather but around 3000 miles year
yoga & swimming when I can

starting walking club soon to see how it goes

Railwayroad · 02/02/2023 22:55

I’m 60.

i go to gym 4 times a week. Usually do a class. Body pump or Pilates.

Walk the dog at least 30 mins a day.

MrsAvocet · 02/02/2023 23:05

I'm min 50s. I go for a walk or ride my bike for between 1 and 2 hours most days unless the weather is truly horrific (I'm retired so have time). I also do a yoga/stretch dvd about 3 times a week. I can't do anything high impact because of medical problems so everything I do is slow and steady but it seems to be keeping me going!
I think threads like this will give a bit of a skewed perspective though as people who are interested in exercise are more likely to reply. I have some friends around my age or older who are super fit, but lots of others who really don't do anything.

Carlycat · 03/02/2023 01:40

Weightlifting 3 times a week. Once with my PT, twice in my own gym ( I lift HEAVY )
Spin classes 7 times a week for cardio

Carlycat · 03/02/2023 01:41

I'm 61 btw

talknomore · 03/02/2023 02:03

I walk my dog 7-10 km every day. Some days more. That is at least 11k/day.

2 gym sessions/week. One of them with PT or I would not be as motivated. Sessions are 80 minutes at least, with cooling down/stretching. I am hoping to make one more but finding it hard.
I never really enjoyed classes. Maybe yoga if the teacher was good.
I am prioritising my exercises for the first time in my life and am already feeling results.

talknomore · 03/02/2023 02:04

*11k steps a day

doubleshotcappuccino · 03/02/2023 02:05

Pilates or yoga 5 times a week ... Pilates has shown me the biggest difference and I love yoga
