50+ what exercise do you do?

Inspired by a thread on AIBU, I'd like to understand from fellow over 50's what exercise they do. Interested to see if my activity is above average and whether I should be doing other stuff. I tend to gravitate towards what I enjoy more as that means I'll keep up with it. Conscious I should probably do some weight training but I find it boring. So here's what I do in a typical week.

At least two swims of at least 1k
2-3 45 minute spin classes, one of which is followed by a slightly shorter swim
A 30 minute dog walk most days

I have a gym membership so could do anything - lots of classes available.

What do you do?

I will be 70 this month and weekly regimen is:
Gym classes
2 x Body pump
2 x Pilates
1 x Tabata (HiiT)
1 x Legs, bums & tums
1 x Step
1 x Aquarobics with 15 min swim before and after class

Pilates Studio
1 advanced class with lots of "toys" - I've been doing pilates for 22 years

Over the years, when I was younger it was tennis, squash, rowing, skiing, yoga and keep fit classes, but I have never considered myself to be sports mad. I just did things at my own pace and liked being outdoors.
Now it's no more running and jumping about - I'm just trying to maintain a strong and flexible body with good posture.

I recently began swimming again as it's an all body workout that I hope to be able to continue well into old age. I think that as we get older, it's a good idea to plan what exercises/activities would benefit us most with regard to things like osteoporosis and general wear and tear on joints.

PushthechocolateButton · 02/02/2023 18:25

Run 5K 3 times a week
Brisk walk 5 days a week
Tennis or squash 3 times a week
Average 14000 steps a day
I’m conscious that I need to improve my upper body strength but feel fit

fairtrauchled · 02/02/2023 18:28

I do 3-4 classes a week,Pilates,Zumba and yoga.I also do an hour in the gym on the bike and resistance machines.
I go for walks of up to 6 miles 2-3 times a week.

Thighdentitycrisis · 02/02/2023 18:14

This thread is depressing me😁

Run 30 mins 2-3 times a week
walk to work and back (2 miles) 4 times a week
trying to add a swim once a week
I need to do weights as I’m very flabby

Remember it's posted in the "Exercise" topic so you will see answers that are skewed to people who do more exercise.

I walk to work (a mile away), do some weights twice a week and swim once a week.

In theory. It doesn't always happen.

"Walk briskly for 30 minutes a day. This is enough to keep my weight in check at BMI 21"

Nah, it's what you eat that keeps your weight in check.

Its both. At my age, height and weight, my daily calorie requirement is a tiny 1600 a day, which is hard for me to stick to. The daily walks push it up to 1800 which is easier.

TheOrigRights · 02/02/2023 18:43

52
1 circuits/weights class
Run at least 3 times (club x 2 and long run or race at the weekend)

If time allows then I will try and get to the pool (1k) and in the finer weather get out on the bike. I do the odd sprint Tri.

Have done some open water swimming too.

If I can't run (there were a few stupid weeks with the ice and then mud) then I'll march around the fields for about 44 mins with an audio book.

I have a sedentary job.

I mean, bloody well done to you all but I can't help thinking these replies are not representative! I do no structured exercise, maybe walk 3/4000 steps a day on average.

Of course it's not representative - it's in the exercise topic.

I think this is far more the norm . I'm over 50 and do two classes a week
and 2 good long dog walks .
I don't know anyone over 50 that does the amount of exercise listed here . Primarily because when could you find the time if you work FT.

I work long hours, the three classes a week tend to be in the evenings after 7pm, a good distraction from my work and I sleep better on those nights. Gym sessions mostly at the weekend.

I prioritise going to the gym/classes above everything else during the week, as in I rarely go out otherwise, maybe a meal out a couple of times a month.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/02/2023 18:51

Body Pump and Body Combat every week and sometimes Body Attack. Walk to and from work 3 times a week (about 25 mins each way). Don't drive so walk lots too. I ache a lot more afterwards now!

TitInATrance · 02/02/2023 18:53

Early 60s. I do 3 or 4 swims a week of 1100 or 1200m, depending how early I arrive; walk between 3-6 miles per day 5 days a week plus two longer walks of 8-9 miles.

I should probably do some weights but I get too tired if I do.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 02/02/2023 18:56

1 hour strength training 3/4 times a week & 4 1 hour dog walks. I’d like to take up running.

BlueHeelers · 02/02/2023 19:00

Mid-60s.

I do 2 PT sessions a week, with heavy lifting and fast running: today I was doing deadlift sets at 95kilos, and treadmill intervals of 15 seconds at 15kph.

I do an equally strenuous Bootcamp class, and then add in some HIIT sessions if I have the time (I have a pretty full on job). And I do 3 ballet classes a week.

TheOtherHotstepper · 02/02/2023 19:00

An average over the week of 10,000 steps a day and a Pilates class.

Floofydawg · 02/02/2023 19:12

Wow, lots of replies. The way I fit it all in is I WFH so can fit some of it in at lunchtimes, or mornings. No commute makes a huge difference. And I have no kids at home.

When do those who work full time find the time?? It’s easy if you prioritise yourself rather than TV. I also to as little housework as possible, cook meals that are preppable in less than 15 minutes and stick them in the oven whilst exercising. We also watch very little TV in the week. I get home from work at 6, that gives 3 to 4 hours each day ‘free time’.

I do prioritise my sport in the evening. I can leave my 13yo home alone now (lone parent) so I'll cook dinner for him, do sport, come home, sort life out and then go to bed really late. I do watch a bit of telly and read.
I'm happy to to go out for a run at 9pm.
They used to have a 9-10pm swim session which I loved. Go to pool, shower, and back home w/o worrying about getting dressed properly and hair etc.

lljkk · 02/02/2023 20:14

maybe walk 3/4000 steps a day on average.

wow, how? I mean, how? I'd have to plan ahead & work at it to get my step count so low.

Dejavu23 · 02/02/2023 20:15

Nowhere near as much as everyone else on this thread!

I do a 15-20 minute YouTube workout video every day. I go for a long walk once a week. I used to do one or two classes a week pre-covid but never got back into that with booking in advance etc.

After reading the thread about so many unfit women, I feel I should make the effort to do much more.

I'm 52 and work full time, I run 3 times a week (about 25 to 30km on average) and do 2 body pump classes. I find the time because I make the time! My kids are grown up so I have flexibility but I choose to exercise rather than sit around after work, I drag myself out in the cold and the dark. It's tricky to make time when you're managing school age children but it's also easy to make excuses!

What a dickish comment.

It is extremely easy - drive to work carpark, walk into office and around the building a bit as required. Sit a lot doing a professional role that doesn't involve leaving your desk much, eat your lunch at your desk, walk to car and drive home.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/02/2023 20:35

Earlyish 60s. Walk between 40 & 50 miles a week. I have walking friends so some of this is also my social life.

About 10 minutes of random exercises a day, sit ups, that sort of thing.

A short run once or twice a week. Lots of gardening (does that count?) Various other bits and bobs such as paddle boarding and cycling.

No videos or classes, neither appeal to me. I might consider yoga if I had time but still running a busy business.

Looking at female relatives and my body's own inclination, I am probably naturally a size 14 or 16. I feel so much healthier as a size 8 and prioritise my nutrition and activity. I think as women get older it becomes more and more important.

GordonShakespearedoesChristmas · 02/02/2023 20:44

Running. Started at 50 and have just kept going. Am overweight still but pretty fit with an excellent resting heart rate!

Maxifly · 02/02/2023 20:46

Dog walk 90 minutes a day. Circuit class 1 hour. Barbell class 1 hour. Boot Camp 1 hour, spread over 6 days. Occasional yoga class. Started gym 6 years ago, dislike using machines on my own so joined in with the classes. So much more progress in a class setting, and weights really helps with strength, flexibility and keeping osteoporosis at bay. Lost weight too.

Teawaster · 02/02/2023 17:28

I'm 60 and run 50 to 55 miles a week and go to strength and conditioning classes twice a week

Goodness! That's mightily impressive!

Greatly · 02/02/2023 20:53

Noone I know in RL does the amount of exercise that some here do. Except my friend who does age group triathlon, most people do 2 exercise classes or sessions a week plus walk their dogs.
