Why do you exercise?

What exercise do you do and why?

I haven't been able to find something that I like enough to do it consistently.

I like to exercise as it helps me to eat better feel better and look better. But I don't really do it enough for any of those things to really come to fruition.

I tend to run, gym or home workout. Don't particularly like home workout so reason for doing that is logistically easier.

Cycling (road and mountain bike) - try to go a couple of times per week . Love it & very social too. Have lots of cycling buddies.

running - try to do 5k once or twice per week. Sometimes do ParkRun on Saturdays. I prefer cycling, but running takes less time.

On days when I don’t cycle or run, I walk. I have a 45 minute loop I do on lunch breaks (I WFH)

I have a turbo trainer (indoor cycling) at home for days when I can’t get out, eg if DH away or working late. Then I’ll do that once DC in bed. Much prefer to get outside though!

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:22

Balance, pump, attack, combat, LBT.
All done at the sports centre as I like group classes

Picklewicklepickle · 05/12/2022 21:23

Resistance training 4 times a week to preserve my muscle mass and my bone density as I get older, really change the shape of my body and generally feel like a badass!

Run 5k once a week, not particularly fast but it’s my cardio for my heart health and I feel like being able to do it is a basic level of fitness I should be able to maintain.

Both of the above are also really important for my mental health.

Walk 10-12 k steps per day on average, not really exercise but keep my body moving.

I’d love to fit in a few classes for fun but it’s all I can manage at the moment with work and small children and the resistance training is my priority.

I hated PE and exercise growing up as I am crap at sports but glad I’ve finally found my things!

Ice skating. My bottom has never been so pert.

StarlessSea123 · 05/12/2022 21:33

At the moment I’m on maternity leave, 8 months postpartum and I don’t get a lot of time to do a workout as such, so I make a point of going for a long (sometimes 1.5hr) power walk with the pram once a day during DDs afternoon nap. Walking fast enough to be slightly out of breath. It’s worked for my post pregnancy weight loss, would love to do some toning exercises though for my c-section flabby tummy ( DD was huge and my bump was massive so I have a bit of excess skin). I look forward to our daily walk, listening to a podcast as I go Smile

Running, HIIT, weights, spinning. All bar running in small classes. I exercise daily.

I used to hate walks just for the sake of them, but one positive from lockdown is realising how much I do enjoy walks, Ava while I don't see it as exercise, I think it is so important for overall fitness & general toning.

EarringsandLipstick · 05/12/2022 21:43

And for the why, number 1 is mental health. I just feel so much better when I exercise, it takes away stress & low mood. I'm much more organised when I exercise too.

Secondly is body image & shape. I like feeling fit, looking muscular & for me, it's important to manage my weight - I'm small in height, and in my 40s, for the first time have to work to make sure I stay the same weight.

MadameDe · 05/12/2022 21:44

Cycle to work, run and walk. All of it is because none of it requires special / expensive equipment.

SkankingWombat · 05/12/2022 21:48

I have an active job plus walk instead of drive wherever possible and am often out in the garden, but I also swim twice a week. I can't abide regularly lane swims (boring and stressful trying to work around other people), so I do club swimming instead. It is made up of a variety of sets/drills so it doesn't get boring, people are much better about being in the right lane for their speed, everyone is doing the same thing at the same time, and it is quite social as we now know each other.

Lcb123 · 05/12/2022 21:50

Running as it’s mostly free-and can it whenever. Cycling and walking as a way to get around (don’t have a car). Swimming as cheapish

SirChenjins · 05/12/2022 21:50

Walk the dog - I walk miles each week. I have to do it, and once I’m out in the fresh air and in nature, even on crap days, I feel an inner calm - it’s just me and him. Absolutely love it. The gym holds no appeal for me whatsoever.

ValBiro · 05/12/2022 21:51

Walk everywhere I can despite having a car. Briskly as well (normally because I'm late for everything!) Average 15-20k steps a day.

Run 3 or 4 times a week, on my own or with the Athletics Club training sessions

Lift heavy weights (well, 7.5kg) for 20mins several times a week in the kitchen once kids are in bed. I add lunges, sit ups and squats to this routine depending on how long I've got.

I do it it keep fit and trim, maintain my weight and so that I can eat (more or less) what I want. Most importantly, with the running especially, for my MH. It clears my head, gives me a sense of well-being and completion and also allows me time away from the house/kids/work.

illiterato · 05/12/2022 21:52

Running and weight training. Not sure I really enjoy them- sometimes I do, sometimes it’s a bit of a chore. I always like having done it though. In terms of why do I exercise, just to maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness and strength and not get fat.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/12/2022 21:53

I do a spin class and a body combat class once a week. As well as walking home from work 3/4 times a week. I.mean I totally suck at the combat but I'm.used to being the entertainment anywhere i go anyway 😳

Its not much but I feel better for doing it. I do it to get out the house and meet people as well as for fitness.

Shannith · 05/12/2022 21:54

Daily yoga for an hour. Ride 3/4 times a week. Started the yoga to be a better rider. Not sure it's worked but it's certainly made me strong, flexible and lean.

Augustlou30 · 05/12/2022 21:55

I've found the only way I can be consistent about exercise is at home just now. Single, busy mum. I am a member of RWL and a stream workouts through my TV and just love some of the trainers. I do a real mix of workouts but mostly strength, LIIT and Pilates. When kids at their dads and I'm not working I like to get out and do a 5k. I'd love to do more classes or the gym one day but for now RWL is great.

I exercise for my mental health mostly and now I'm in my 40s it's preparing for menopause and keeping strong.

Margo34 · 05/12/2022 21:55

Walk, swimming, pilates, chase a toddler, Zumba kids.

Before children, I absolutely loved Bounce Fit (exercise class on a trampette!), Step and Zumba.

toastofthetown · 05/12/2022 21:57

Ice skating because I really enjoy it. I started as a total beginner so there’s a lot of progress that I can make, which is satisfying. I get certificates that give me more satisfaction than is probably warranted. It’s challenging, but not overwhelming and varied things we do each lesson, and the coaching in a small group works well for me.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 05/12/2022 22:00

Running. A little bit of cycling and weight training. Running most days.

I do it to race and try and get faster

PeloFondo · 05/12/2022 22:01

Peloton. Mostly spin classes but also yoga, stretching and starting some strength classes
Try to do 5 x 30 min spin classes a week

gorkaandhelenforthewin · 05/12/2022 22:04

Running, Step, Bodypump, dog walking (several miles a day) recently started doing weekly personal training. I love any and all forms of exercise I'm not fussy.

Fizbosshoes · 05/12/2022 22:06

I run 4-5 times a week. Occassionally do some hula hooping, skipping or HIIT. I asked DH for weights last Xmas, I think I've used them once Blush

ScrambledOrPoached · 05/12/2022 22:07

Netball. It’s fun.

gwenneh · 05/12/2022 22:08

I ride horses because I enjoy both competing, and just everyday riding.

For me exercise has to be functional or I won't do it. Exercising for the sake of exercise has never really interested me.

DillDanding · 05/12/2022 22:09

Body pump - hate it but great for toning/muscles.

Spin/sprint/RPM - really love and good for fitness.

Treadmill running - love and hate but good for cardio fitness and staving off osteoporosis.

Yoga - find it boring but great for suppleness and staying long and lean.
