When do you do your exercise and how frequent?

I'm just trying to get into exercise. I need to crest a habit and routine rather than just expect the exercise will happen.

When do you get your workout in? Morning, lunchtime, evening, weekend!

How many times do you workout and what kind of fitness do you do?

I'm thinking 3-4 times per week, couple if runs, a walk and something strength related.

I prefer to exercise in the mornings but having a dog and a full time job puts paid to that! I do 2 body pump classes a week and run twice a week all in the evenings, then I do my long run on Saturday morning. Friday and Sunday I walk the dog but don't do structured exercise. Definitely agree that finding exercise that you like and then forming a habit is the way to create a routine that sticks.

FourEyesGood · 18/04/2022 19:00

I run first thing (before work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, then usually a longer one on Saturdays) and do classes at the gym a couple of times a week, usually in the evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays. I much prefer to exercise before doing anything else in the morning - it stops me talking myself out of it! But it does mean getting up at 5am (ugh).

hamstersarse · 18/04/2022 19:01

I’m not a morning person so it’s only dog walking before work.

I do (mostly) daily exercise between 5 and 7 in the week. I’ll put something in the oven and go for a run / cycle / swim and then have family dinner about 7.

At weekends, I will tend to do Saturday morning around 10 for big bike ride / run. Then usually big walks on Sundays, maybe a swim in the afternoon.

2manycats · 18/04/2022 19:05

I far prefer mornings but I can't do that unless it's the school holidays. In term time it's the evenings and running on the weekend mornings. I do a mixture of Les Mills online classes - minimum of 2x strength training classes a week, maximum of 3, 2 or 3 cardio and 1 conditioning. Sunday is my rest day but I still aim for my 10k steps.

emmathedilemma · 19/04/2022 11:14

I'm not a morning exercise person, I need breakfast and water before I start jumping around! I usually go to the gym after work 3-4 evenings a week, occasionally do a swim either after the gym or instead of, try to get out for a walk at lunchtime, run one evening a week with the club and once or twice at weekend.

jeffersonsam · 19/04/2022 14:31

Early morning 5 to 6 is my exercise time. Everyday I m doing my workout. I likes to start my workout with a glass of water. Early morning running exercise and doing some simple workouts in my daily life. These will supports to improving my body health acitivty very well.

lljkk · 19/04/2022 18:27

About half of my exercise is a form of active travel, not sure how other ppl manage. So mine is daily for every errand I need to do. When DC were little it was mostly buggy pushing for miles.

I'm not good at routines, but will fit in a swim on pool timetable, too.

Natsku · 19/04/2022 18:41

I do it first thing in the morning, before I do anything else, I find that works best for me. I just do Ringfit, because I need that motivation from the game, but do it almost every morning (one or two mornings off each week). I feel much healthier than I have in years so I think its working, also much less aches and pains so long as I don't skip it for more than a couple of days in a row.

EmmaStone · 19/04/2022 19:34

I'm not really a morning person, I might have good intentions, but I struggle to consistently follow through.

I work 80%, so on my day off, I see my PT fortnightly, that's usually early afternoon.

I go to a yoga class once a week at 6:30, so get home from work (or preferably a WFH day), prep dinner, then head off with DH completing dinner while I'm out.

The rest of the time, I will try to fit in some exercise at home, we have a treadmill and a spin bike, plus I have some free weights, and a Peloton digital subscription. This morning I managed a quick run before leaving for work, but in term time we have to leave the house at 7:30, so I don't have time normally (I'm not prepared to wake up any earlier than I already do at 6:30). So it's usually a quick jump on the bike or some weights before in between work and dinner. If it's dry when I've dropped the kids at school and before I start work, I'll march around the town for 30 mins.

At weekends I'll usually do at least one long walk with friends, and generally will try and do something else active, either with the family or alone. I'd say my best time for exercising is about 4pm, but that never fits in with my lifestyle!

The best times are holidays, I get loads of exercise done when I'm away!!

EmmaStone · 19/04/2022 19:35

Oh also, exercising with someone else is really helpful - I used to do a circuits class (pre-Covid, it's not been restarted sadly) with a variety of local friends who so,e times did it too. I'd send a text in the morning offering a lift to anyone else who wanted to come, which made sure I'd be going even if I didn't want to by the time the evening rolled around. Having a commitment makes an enormous difference.

speakout · 19/04/2022 19:38

I do yoga every morning- 5 classes a week, some at 7.30 am, some at 9am. If not at a class I will practice at home.

Lovemusic33 · 19/04/2022 19:38

A hour at least, most days, usually first thing in the morning, walk, swim or gym (mainly walking and hill walks), some days 2 hours or more if I go on a longer hike. I then do a bit of yoga 3 or 4 times a week, usually 20 minutes in the evening.

Watapalava · 19/04/2022 19:49

This thread has made me realise how few people must work full time? I’m in work by 8am and it’s an hour commute

Are you all sahm or part time?

speakout · 19/04/2022 19:51

Are you all sahm or part time?
Neither. I am full time self employed.

fellrunner85 · 19/04/2022 20:08

Full time here, 50+ hour week and a 45- min commute each way. Exercise is what keeps me sane. I definitely do less tv watching and less sitting down than most people, to find time for it. And probably less cleaning too Blush

DrunkenKoala · 19/04/2022 20:10

I go for a swim first thing at 6.30. I have a glass of water when I first get up and head out the door, then have my breakfast afterwards, about 7.45. I do that four mornings a week (Mon,Tue, Thursday and Fri). I swim for about half an hour.

I used to swim late morning, I’d have my breakfast about 7.30, swim about 10.30 then lunch about 12.00 and I found that was routine I liked the best.

I’ve tried swimming in the afternoon and evenings and I really struggled then.

Like I said, Active Travel for same hour in my case. I could
  • drive for 35 minutes (very early to reach office/& very late coming home, pay £5 for parking 4 minute walk from office) or
  • drive for 30 minutes (fairly early, park 15-20 minutes walk to office, pay 0 or £2)
  • cycle 5 minutes, train 35 minutes, cycle 20-25 minutes going in & reverse coming back, just train fare to pay which is about same as petrol+wear-n-tear on car
  • drive 45-55 minutes at ordinary times to reach office or get home, park 4 minutes walk from office

Actually, the drive is about 10 minutes longer at moment due to a major road being washed out in February.

it always works out as close to 1 hour commute each way, but I have choices how to get some exercise as part of the commute.

Also gritted teeth to get some 6:30-7:20am or 8:30-9:15pm swims

Usually went for walk or run at lunch times

often cycling around with DC in evenings to get them to Brownies, footie, whatever

Weekends more flexible

hamstersarse · 19/04/2022 20:55

I work full time and still average 1.5 hrs a day exercise

2manycats · 19/04/2022 22:18

I’m full time. I need the exercise to decompress from work.

RedRoseRay · 19/04/2022 22:21

30 minutes running every morning

RedRoseRay · 19/04/2022 22:22

And I work from home - single parent to two young children

MrsJBaptiste · 19/04/2022 22:35

Full timer here (8-5pm) but do WFH which makes things easier.

I go to the gym 4-5 times a week and run when I can, either before work at 6.15am or after at 5.30pm. After sitting at home all day, I'm desperate to move and so an evening gym session is great although always heaving 🙄

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 19/04/2022 22:35

I vary my timeslots, but before work doesn't work for me. I run at lunchtime 1-2 times a week, a weights session in the evening 1 Day, see my PT at lunchtime another day. I do yoga in the morning on my nonworking day. The routine is key and makes me feel great.

I work 4 days, soon to go up to 5. Still mostly from home, but when I go to the office I get up and go in early so I can leave early to work out.

Hawkins001 · 19/04/2022 22:37

Most days I do around 5 miles walking sometimes more, then also use a bicycle for around 30mins,

hellcatspangle · 19/04/2022 22:37

I walk every morning for about 45 mins but do extra walks later in the day/go to gym classes intermittently. I need a better routine!
