Gym clothing - does anyone wear track pants?

I used to be a huge gym goer (and slim back then) and then didn’t go fit several years after I had my DS. I always wore gym tops and track pants as did most others.

Now on joining the gym again absolutely all the women wear Lycra leggings - not a track pant in sight, ever. I look horrific in leggings - my legs look like fat sausages and they only highlight my fat stomach/abdomen/bottom. Women of all sizes are wearing leggings but no one looks horrific like me (size 16-18), but I feel like some do look me up and down in my plain black track pants like I’m some sort of oddity. It’s not a ‘poser’ -type gym either but I feel so out of place.

Anyone else not wearing leggings and where do you get your gym clothes from? Maybe my track pants aren’t ‘cool’ enough! 🤦‍♀️

Me, I do! I don't even wear a gym top, I wear Adidas trackies and a mens T-Shirt! I have been going to the gym off and on for over 20 years, I don't care anymore :) Wear what you feel comfy in.

dementedpixie · 24/02/2022 11:11

I wear cropped leggings (size 18/20) and a short sleeved sports top (not a vest). Sometimes I even wear shorts!

gamerchick · 24/02/2022 11:11

Wear what you want OP. Nobody is caring whether you wear trackies or a second skin. As long as the material isn't see through nobody is bothered.

As long as you're comfortable is all that matters.

Stellaris22 · 24/02/2022 11:14

I don't care what anyone else wears in the gym, it's about being comfortable. People should be there to work out not judge what you're wearing so I'd be very upset if this happened.

I do wear leggings because I like the flexibility. I'm of the larger size so just wear T-shirts or long vest tops with leggings. I've found high waisted leggings are the only ones worth buying as they fit over your stomach and are far comfier when on the treadmill or lunging/squats.

But just wear what makes you comfy and you're happy to work out in.

Leftbutcameback · 24/02/2022 11:19

I don’t because I’d get too hot, but I have just bought some nice ones from John Lewis which are thinner and which I could wear! I always feel leggings hold in the wobble more!

nearlyspringyay · 24/02/2022 11:35

No I don't because they're hit, flappy, sweetly and show sweat. I'm a size 16 and wear Lycra, don't care what anyone thinks about that and likewise don't care what anyone else wears.

MrsBertBibby · 24/02/2022 11:41

I wear legging things and a T shirt, preferably one that covers the worst of my wobbles.

I will bet you any amount of money OP that you look absolutely fine in leggings, but wear what you want. The only clothes I look at is the women with bizarrely placed see through bits on their gear. One young woman on the tread mill in front of me had a mesh area to show off her thong and bum cheeks. I assumed this was deliberate, else I'd have mentioned it to her. Bizarre! Although she was in fantastic shape, arse and all.

Rosehugger · 24/02/2022 11:47

Wear what you are comfortable in. It depends on the gym, but the one I go to is not pretentious, has people of all shapes, sizes and ages and no-one would really care what someone else was wearing.

I used to wear wide legged yoga pants in the gym, looser than leggings, would something like that suit? Though not so flappy that they get stuck in the treadmill. Smile

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 24/02/2022 11:49

Leggings are far more comfortable to work out in than track pants but you could try loose yoga pants?

itsnotdeep · 24/02/2022 11:50

you'll stand out more in baggy joggers than you would if you're in leggings.

Ultimately though, most people are only concerned about what they look like and won't even notice you.

Stellaris22 · 24/02/2022 11:54

When I first started I was very self conscious and wore jogging bottoms. I did find them very restrictive and I was unable to complete the full range of motion for exercises.

High waisted leggings are your friend. The support is great and you'll feel much more able to complete exercises.

yoshiblue · 24/02/2022 11:57

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at what you were wearing, either leggings or track pants.

I think I'd find track pants too hot unless they were thinner. I've had some nice ones from Decathlon in the past.

purplesequins · 24/02/2022 11:59

I prefer leggings as they stop 'the wobble'

but imo if you are more comfortable in looser clothing that's absolutely fine.

SheWoreYellow · 24/02/2022 11:59

What about something like this? Sport legging material but a bit looser.

TreasuredMim · 24/02/2022 11:59

I wear comfy tracky bottoms. That's what I choose to wear. Most women at my gym wear lycra leggings. That's what they choose to wear. No one gives a damn what I wear or what you wear. Just go to the gym and exercise. Simples.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/02/2022 12:02

I wear Lands' End Starfish slim leg trousers to the gym and a big t-shirt. They're lighter than jogging bottoms, which I would probably get too hot in, but not clingy. They're the same material that the Starfish leggings are made out of so very flexible and not see-through on squats. I never pay full price for them, there's usually some sort of offer code every couple of months. These

Fellrunner85 · 24/02/2022 12:03

I wear shorts, or running leggings if I'm outside and it's really cold. I need to be able to move freely, and baggy track pants get in the way.

Don't get me wrong, I love my track pants, but they're strictly for warming up and cooling down. Track pants to me are what you pull on with a hoody in the tent after XC, not what you actually work out in..

myno5 · 24/02/2022 12:29

I wear joggers( elasticated cuff) with a tight/ fitted top- for stretch class, as I don't get hot and sweaty.
I wear leggings with a looser top for weights- better for wicking sweat and covering bulges....
I'm a big size 14 with lots of wobbly bits. But you just can't let yourself get hung up on what you look like. I would never be able to go swimming if I cared what other people might be thinking ( although they are probably not the slightest bit interested!).

Liverbird77 · 24/02/2022 12:30

If anyone's looking you up and down you're in the wrong gym! Sounds horrible!

emmathedilemma · 24/02/2022 15:48

I'm sure some people but I don't really notice! Most of the men wear shorts but I think some of the guys who come in to only lift heavy weights wear trackies. Most women probably wear leggings. i think i'd melt if i wore jogging bottoms and they'd annoy me flapping. We used to have a guy wore jeans and read the financial times on the static bike!

WouldBeGood · 24/02/2022 15:54

I wear joggers sometimes if I’m doing weights as the gym can be cold.

Usually leggings and a long vest top, with a t shirt type thing on top, vest top for spin or hot classes.

TammyOne · 24/02/2022 18:36

I get much hotter in Lycra leggings than I do
In trackies! I’m not talking about fleecy ones- I wear the same kind of trackies my sons wear to play footy in- adidas or Nike, thin fabric and tapered at the bottom. They have zip pockets too which is handy.

Lordamighty · 24/02/2022 18:41

I wear yoga style pants & gym top. I’ve been going to the gym for 30+ years, honestly nobody cares what you wear.

SNUG2022 · 24/02/2022 18:43

Can't run in joggers. Tie a hoodie round your waist. I don't see how people can take the piss out of a fat person in a gym. It's just the wrong way round.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2022 18:46

I'm not sure about this. Leggings stick to your legs. I've often thought that thin tracksuit bottoms would be better as your legs could breathe a bit. I suppose the other option is leggings, but with a very long top. Tying something around your waist really isn't ideal. I have to do it sometimes when exercising outside, but I wouldn't choose to in the gym.
