Simple 5 minute routine for over 70’s

Hi,

I am looking for some recommendations for simple exercises for over 70’s to do for 5 minutes a day. I am specifically looking for things to help keep balance, etc. rather than aerobic fitness. This is for my parents who are still fit and healthy, and who go out for a good paced walk everyday and are not couch potatoes like me, but who are starting to show more signs of rapid aging.

I seem to remember someone here, who maybe worked in a care home(?), recommend something like standing on one leg next to the kitchen counter for a certain amount of time, then the swapping legs and things like that, but I can’t find the old thread anymore.

Do you wise people have any recommendations?

Thanks a lot

We're just giving this thread a bump for the OP in case anyone's around with some ideas.

OP, if you'd like us to move this over to our Elderly Parents topic, just let us know.

Have a look for Standing Tall exercise program, it was very good for keeping my mother on the move

You might find useful resources on YouTube. I looked a while ago for my Dad. I can’t remember the specifics but I’m sure I found some videos.
Unfortunately my dad wasn’t interested.

Tai chi is a brilliant exercise and has so many benefits. Particularly recommended for over 65s.
There are free five minute routine videos on YouTube

Is this of any use?

Mr Motivator released a year of weekly "Daily Dozen" youtube videos. Some are titled Baby Boomer, but on the general ones, his wife often demonstrated chair based adaptions.

Dr Chatterjee has a 5 minute kitchen exercise programme which sounds similar to the one you are describing.

With respect "This is for my parents who are still fit and healthy, and who go out for a good paced walk everyday and are not couch potatoes like me" and they are in their 70's - it's great that you are concerned but they are already doing a lot.

If they feel they need to do something specific then anything to support balance/falls prevention is great. This might have something for them.

The NHS has a lot of strength & balance videos.

Definitely Pilates or Tai Chi too.

A search for something like "functional aging exercises" brings up lots of resources.
