I've really noticed through wearing my fitbit that brisk walking is great exercise. It burns nearly as many calories as jogging if you walk fast and on hilly routes. It's free. You don't need to shower afterwards, usually. I'm lucky that I can walk to work and to local shops. It's good for mental wellbeing.

So I'm going to try to walk every day this year. Please join me if you want to log steps, minutes, calories or km/ miles.

This morning I walked for 72 mins and burned 412 cals. 8000 steps. Pretty slow pace.

Now up to 14k steps today by vigorously cleaning and hoovering. Pleased with that.

Its my plan this year as well. Used to walk loads with my dog but she does not walk much now so I stopped and I miss it. Was much easier with the the routine of dog walking!Going to aim for a long walk at least 3 times a week. I see a big improvement in my fitness and also my general wellbeing when i walk in the countryside. Well done on your steps!

It's hard in the winter isn't it? I'm a homebody and love being cosy at home. I've found if I can get out for a walk in the morning it perks me up for the day and I feel better

I’m very overweight and extremely unfit,…but I NEED to start somewhere. My daily aim is 8000 steps and 30 mins exercise minutes within that.

Yesterday’s effort was 7443 steps with 51 exercise minutes.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 02/01/2022 10:55

Well done @ChittyChittyBoomBoom

30 min walk to the park with DS = 150 cal and 3500 steps. I find it's good to split my walk into 2 or 3 a day if I'm busy. I get a few steps in at home tidying up etc which all helps

It’s surprising how being active around the house helps it all to mount up.

Just taken my mums dog for a walk and done 4789 steps and 57 exercise minutes. I think I’m probably doing too much for my level of fitness and risk burning out over the next few days. I’ve only got my mums dog for the week so I’ll be able to dial it back when she’s gone.

Xmasgetaway · 02/01/2022 12:00

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom after a week you will have built on your fitness. If you dial back after that you will make no progress. You’re not going to ‘burn out’ by moving around.
4,000 off steps is a good start, but nowhere near to ‘burn out’ unless you are normally bed bound or your doctor has advised you to limit your movement to around the house.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 02/01/2022 12:19

I’m extremely unfit. I find it very demotivating when I get so tired from so little exercise.

NatMoz · 02/01/2022 12:30

I use Strava to measure my walks. I was pregnant for most of 2021 (pregnant in Jan, miscarriage in Feb, pregnant again in March and gave birth in mid December) so haven't been running like I used to.

I still can't run at the moment due to C-section and genuine fear of prolapse/other internal damage if I start too soon so I've been walking with the pram.

Today I walked almost 2.5 miles around the park near my house, love the fresh air and will get out every day with newborn in tow

Alysskea · 02/01/2022 12:39

I need to do this!!!! I'm so unfit but can't afford to do anything that costs.

languagelover96 · 02/01/2022 13:05

I'm starting a exercise class again soon and do a walk several times a week.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 02/01/2022 16:29

DD is going to a sleepover soon so I'm walking her there instead of driving. Will be an hour round trip on foot.

Walking to the corner shop and back is 8300 steps for me - around 300 kcals I guess. I don't mind forgetting to put things in the online shop as much as I used to!

MumOfJayJoeAndEms · 02/01/2022 16:41

I got a train into London on New Years Day, got off at Covent Garden and literally just walked, taking in all the interesting stuff around me, taking photos, and stopped for a coffee.
Great way to see The City and will be making it a regular thing
6.2 miles covered which is twice what I normally do walking my dog every other day

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 02/01/2022 20:49

Pretty sedentary day for me so I deliberately went out for an hour's walk. I didn't hit my daily target of 12k, but overall for the week I surpassed it at 91k.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 11:14

Well I've got an infected blister on my ankle from wearing my wellies so will be doing 15k steps in my house today. Nor as much fun as going outside!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 13:17

78 mins spent dancing around like a loon in the lounge, barefoot, headphones in. 433 calories and 10000 steps. Much to DS' amusement 😁

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 03/01/2022 14:12

I’ve walked to the shops and a friend, but the steps aren’t clocking up. I’ve got a couple of sedentary days ahead too. Going out to the letterbox on a contrived errand now…

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 03/01/2022 14:47

@NatashaBedwouldbenice part of the great post Xmas tidy up - I'm taking one item at a time to the fabric recycling bin in the village. Plus there's a plastic bag to recycle at the co-op. Lots of contrived trips here!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 16:22

I managed a 20 min walk to the shop just now. It definitely helps to do shorter walks through the day. 14844 steps today so far

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 17:34

15k steps 3 days in a row 👍 hoping I can keep it up. Walking to work tomorrow and my job is very active so should hit my step goal.

OP posts:
NatashaBedwouldbenice · 03/01/2022 17:40

I finally managed it today. 14k steps. Not sure why it was so time-consuming today. I guess I'm just sitting down a lot and not picking up the casual steps.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 17:53

@NatashaBedwouldbenice it's easier to go for an actual walk than to dick around trying to be active, definitely. I just need this infected blister to heal and I'll be back on the long walks.

OP posts:
Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 17:53

Also, well done 👏
