Peloton (reduced price) or Peloton+?

Spin virgin here with serious amount of weight to shift. Friends are evangelical about the Peloton. Should I buy the regular older one now that it’s £1350 or stump up £2k for the Peloton bike plus? Is the price difference worth it for a screen that pivots?! (Amex also has 15% off offer if you spend £1500 or more which either model would exceed once you add accessories).

@Passmeamenuatthetottenham

I'm fascinated how anyone who isn't really quite wealthy has 2 grand to spunk on a exercise bike! And yet everyone seems to have one!
Me too. It seems so much money - and you then pay for classes on top. It would be cheaper to go to several live spin classes a week wouldn't it?

A friend and her husband who are both PTs admit theirs gathers dust...

Trappedinflatandskint · 16/09/2021 13:44

It's not £2k, it's £1300. And for me cheaper than gym membership that I couldn't use for most of the last 18 months. I guess we all spend money on different things. I have an old second hand car for example whereas people who earn less than me often spend hundreds per month on lease deals. Different strokes and all that.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/09/2021 15:52

I got a regular second-hand but gym quality spin bike and use the app. You can't see the leaderboard, but that doesn't bother me. Much cheaper.

I agree it might be cheaper for some, but we both work full time, live rurally and have young children who cannot be left alone. The benefit for us is we can jump on the bike for 15 minutes, half an hour, hour, whenever we feel like it (3-4 times a week each generally). Means we exercise much more than I did when I had a gym membership so the ‘pay per ride’ cost is actually much better than a gym membership. We pay for the convenience, but it’s not for everyone!

I admire your self-discipline. I know mine would end up being an expensive clothes horse. I only exercise regularly because I've paid for a class, like the teacher and so feel that I should show up.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 17/09/2021 08:04

I have the Bike+ and I don't use the swivel screen and am not too keen on the auto follow on resistance so, in my opinion, you may as well go for the regular Bike if you won't be accessing other classes from it.

On Peloton itself, I absolutely love it. We've had ours since February and I have so much fun on it. The best part for me is the community - I've joined a UK women's team and we do different challenges with other teams in the UK and international which really keep you motivated. The groups use Facebook and Messenger and it's really good to see how other people are doing and to encourage one another.

I don't use my Peloton as a weight loss tool but loads of people have (alongside a healthy diet) and there are tons of success stories on the groups. I think the thing about exercise is that it puts you in the right frame of mind to make healthy choices. You can't use it for weight loss alone without making changes to your diet, but it's all about a healthy and active lifestyle.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 18/09/2021 21:46

Peloton changed my life.

I do all the classes, not just cycling (strength, barre, yoga, pilates etc) and love them. I also do their treadmill runs.

The only advantage of the Bike+ in my opinion is the swivel screen, but you can buy Top Pivot for 35 pounds and problem solved.

Googleplexian · 23/09/2021 00:25

How did Peloton change your life @IBelieveInAThingCalledScience? Have ordered one. Gulp…Will try to let everyone know how I get on.

Oh I'm so excited on your behalf!

I think the sheer amount of choice of content alone is staggering.

You can get an instructor/music/theme/vibe for pretty much any occasion. And yes, the music themes are amazing.

Then you get the communities built around Peloton and it all falls into place to motivate, support and keep you accountable and having fun.

I've entered a myriad of challenges and it also introduced me to disciplines I wouldn't have explored otherwise.

I'm in a Powerzone group and in the HardCORE on The Floor group (join us on Facebook), which essentially is a strength calendar curated by a professional with daily Peloton classes.

I realise it sounds like a cult, but in 6 months I went from a size 18 to a size 8 and, crucially, I've never been so disciplined and motivated to train.

I hope you love it!

Googleplexian · 26/09/2021 17:49

OMG @IBelieveInAThingCalledScience. Did you mean to write from an 18 to an 8?! I would be satisfied with a 14! How often are you exercising and for how long? Have you always been sporty/fit? Did you change your diet and if so, how?

Hi everyone, does anyone happen to have a referral code? :)

Ifonlyidknownthen · 28/09/2021 11:34

Personally I'd not stump up for either. Use the time you would spend on the bike taking a brisk walk, the fresh air is good for the soul and it's entirely free. I've used walking for weight loss, combined with a healthy diet, and it's very effective.

Hi everyone, does anyone happen to have a referral code? :)
@alwaysdoingresearch 37Q7AV 😀 enjoy, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent!
alwaysdoingresearch · 28/09/2021 11:44

@COVIDhelp that is great to hear when it is £££ 😂 Unfortunately your code doesn't seem to be working!

COVIDhelp · 28/09/2021 11:58

@alwaysdoingresearch oh no! I’ve attached a photo, maybe try again in a few minutes?

Peloton (reduced price) or Peloton+?
COVIDhelp · 28/09/2021 12:00

@alwaysdoingresearch try the live chat on the peloton website if it doesn’t work. I had to get mine applied through there.

alwaysdoingresearch · 28/09/2021 12:04

@COVIDhelp Working now! Thanks so much!

COVIDhelp · 28/09/2021 12:08

@alwaysdoingresearch phew! Enjoy it, I’ve had mine for a year now and it has been amazing. Smile

HarrietOh · 01/10/2021 13:50

I thought it seemed too expensive so bought a cheaper spin bike around £400 and been using the app instead. I absolutely love it! A year on and now the price is £1,350 I've decided to buy the Peloton bike so that I can access the leaderboards and stats etc.
I also bought weights to do the strength classes, and I do the core strength classes loads.

Username875645 · 12/11/2021 22:05

Do you pay for the bike and the monthly membership on top? Or is the monthly fee like a 3 year finance deal??

#feelingthick

Courgetteflorette · 13/11/2021 23:46

We bought the bike and then pay a monthly membership fee on top.

Newrunner29 · 17/11/2021 14:33

@EmmaStone

I'm an avid Peloton app user (we have an old Life Fitness spin bike), and I can't quite get with (a) the cost of the Peloton bike and (b) the increased monthly membership cost.

I currently pay £12.99 a month, and get access to all live and on demand classes, but obviously don't get the leaderboard. It's a big jump in the monthly cost for the metrics TBH.

I'm actually staying in a hotel tonight that's got a Peloton bike, so I'm hoping to jump on a live class to see how it compares.

The bike is a lovely bit of kit, and I think the Bike + also gives automatic calibration of resistance in time with the class, which is pretty cool. Speakers are also a bit better I think, so not just a swivel screen. But still a big jump in cost.

Can i ask where the hotel was? I have digital app and cheap bike and cannot justify the hike up to £40 a month, but would love to do at least 1 ride on a proper bike!
EmmaStone · 17/11/2021 22:09

You can search for hotels with Peloton bikes here:

hotelfinder.onepeloton.com/en

I tried one in a hotel in London and also at Champneys Tring (no idea if they are at the other Champneys). I think if hotels/gyms realised the attraction of having one, they'd promote them more (I couldn't definitively find anywhere that Champneys Tring had them - they've got 2. Or they did in September!).

mypetpeave · 05/01/2022 11:37

@alwaysdoingresearch My Peloton referral code is FGEKNZ

Psychonabike · 07/01/2022 00:16

For anyone else working out if it is worth it vs gym membership and bike versus bike plus-

My local gym does spin classes, at £11.00 per class or reduced to £5.00 if you also have the £50 monthly membership. Over the first year of owning my bike each class I took on my peloton cost only a couple of pounds (including cost of bike and subscription). And obviously the longer you have it, the cheaper it is per class. I'm currently on an 80 week streak (used the bike at least once a week for 80 weeks, although usually 3-5 times). On top of that, I didn't have to arrange childcare, and could fit it in when it suited me, not following someone else's class times/opening times. A lot of sneering at peloton mentions the bike that goes nowhere, but if it actually went somewhere, it wouldn't be as convenient especially for women stuck at home with kids.

The subscription is £39 per month on the bike, or app alone £12.99. The app isn't the same as the subscription through the bike, and if you are shelling out for the bike you really should get the full subscription or you are wasting you money. Just get a cheaper bike instead to use with the app -not the peloton bike. But know that non peloton bike + app isn't as connected -you won't have all the metrics (without additional gadgets) and it might be harder to do things like powerzone training (peloton's RPE bike training, a great cycling based alternative to traditional spin classes). The £39 is really like a full gym membership in your own home -there are strength programs, yoga, barre, boxing, stretching, foam rolling, walking/running, meditation, bootcamps etc etc with loads of set programs to follow if you need direction. Except you can do it all when it's convenient to you.

The standard bike is a bit cheaper now, and still a great bike. You can adapt it to make the screen pivot for off bike classes with a £47 adapter. It works really well and isn't an adaptation that permanently changes or damages the bike in any way -you could just remove it if your bike needed a repair and you wanted to avoid looking like you'd invalidated the warranty in any way. The bike+ has better sound (but if you plan to wear ear buds/headphones it won't make much difference; the bike is virtually silent, so wearing some bluetooth headphones means you can use it any time of day). It also has auto follow where the resistance adjusts automatically. Some people seem to really like this, others seem to prefer adjusting manually -seems to be quite a personal thing. So the + might not be worth the extra cost, depending on your preferences.

It seems to be pretty unusual for the peloton to turn into a clothes horse. One of the financial journals discussed the cult of peloton last year and discussed the unusual data (for the exercise industry) that showed that people work out much more, and continue for much longer with this compared to other products. The reasoning is the investment in the community. There are loads of virtual badges and challenges to keep up with, like sticker charts for adults I guess (!) and facebook groups doing all kinds of monthly programs and challenges. If you get involved it's really motivating. I do know a few people who've bought then sold their bikes -the main reason was upgrading to a bike plus. Of those who sold because they weren't using it, they were either runners spending too much time running outdoors to fit bike use in or they just didn't get into the community aspect -didn't add "friends" on their profile, get involved in any challenges or any of the social media side of it...without these things I think even the most motivated people will run out of steam.

I love the bike and the whole platform. I got it in the first lockdown and it really helped me keep moving and manage the stress that came with the pandemic. When I ran into trouble sleeping the sleep meditations kept me on track.

I'm obviously really biased -you get a little end of year video on your account each December summarising your year's use and I've been in the top 10% of users each year (that's frequency of use, not ranking fitness btw; the whole ethos is very positive and any sense of competition is more about doing/completing rather than pitting your numbers against someone else's). Trying to think of anything negative to be honest and balanced but the only thing I can think of is cost, and I suppose getting a bit obsessed and wanting to talk about it all the time...

For help with the initial cost, I'd suggest:

Calling up. It's a much better option than just buying on line. If you start to buy on line you'll get a chat pop up. Use that rather than checking out. Ask about upcoming sales and discount codes. They do honour sale prices so if you buy then the price drops within 30 days they refund you the difference (you can also send it back within 30 days for a full refund if you don't like it.
There are cash back deals with some credit cards -AmEx is the main one I think.
Bluelightcard has a discount or free accessories offer at different times.
There is a link between Vitality health ins and peloton that can save you money on your health ins, and that might be developing further soon...
You can use a referral code to save £100. Mine is MGJJ63, but it will stop working after 12 uses in the same year so if that doesn't work, google and you'll find more.
Other forms of life insurance and health insurance may come with discounts -or your minutes on the platform may give you reduced insurance costs, and different memberships and affiliations may have other discounts available. It's worth phoning to discuss and see if you can save anything.
You can also get it on klarna. It's a large monthly payment while the bike is being paid off alongside the subscription, although once subscription only it's much cheaper than any gym near me.

Hope that helps someone wondering about it. I procrastinated about it for too long. Considering how much I've got out of it, I wish I'd bought it when I first saw it...but it was hard to find any honest review then or even simple answers to questions about why the subscription is more expensive than the app etc....
