A bad run’s better than no run, right?

I’ve been running on and off for years but have become sloth-like over this lockdown so am trying to get back on to it. After a full day at work, I came back, forced my handfuls of lard into Lycra at least one size too small (am I hell as buying new stuff, I’ll be thin again soon...) and headed out. Well the wind was strong and freezing, I was knackered, never got my breath, never hit my stride and slunk home after 1.5miles. A new low even for me! Trying to console myself that at least it’s better than no run at all, and trying not to think about the one biscuit worth of calories i heroically burnt off!

Tell me I’m not the only one having exercise fails at the moment!

I think you might be the only one succeeding at all at the moment 😁 congrats on that, any run at all way better than none

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/03/2021 18:39

It’s more than I’ve managed for the last few weeks so we’ll done.
I’m trying to convince myself that I will go tomorrow morning but I’ve made the mistake of looking at the weather forecast which isn’t really helping with my motivation!

Chocolateteabag · 12/03/2021 18:57

You got out there! That's the hardest bit. You put your kit on and got out of the door

It'll be easier next time ...

(Is what I tell myself Grin)

iMatter · 12/03/2021 20:29

An easy run is an easy run

A hard run is the run that matters

Well done for doing it, particularly on a Friday after work

Sammysquiz · 12/03/2021 20:34

Keep going! The next one will be easier. I’m a regular runner and I still find the first 1-2km of every run difficult, even if I then go on to comfortably run another 10km. When I look at my heart-rate analysis it’s always crazy high for the first 10 minutes or so, and then it settles down as I get into my stride.

Persevere with it - maybe try the Couch to 5km app?

Dentistlakes · 12/03/2021 20:34

Any run is better than no run. I can go for weeks and not particularly enjoy running at all. Then I get the mythical runners high and have a dream run and I spend the next few weeks chasing it down again. I mainly run because I feel so shit if I don’t. The running itself is nearly always damn hard work, but I feel great afterwards and that makes it worth it for me.

You should be proud you got out there op. Better a difficult run than no run.

capercaillie · 12/03/2021 20:50

I always find the first bit hard. Now sometimes walk it so I’ve eased in gently.
Or just go slower until I’ve started enjoying it

trilbydoll · 12/03/2021 20:52

I think for the last 12 months I've stopped at 0.8 miles, pretty much cried at how dreadful I feel and had to really force myself to keep going. If I can make it to 2 miles I can usually keep going, I think it takes me a while to warm up, but until that point my legs are full of lead and my lungs are just not functioning at all.

Eyewhisker · 12/03/2021 20:53

The only bad run is the one you didn’t do

ThePricklySheep · 12/03/2021 20:54

You walloped the people on the sofa Smile

renallychallenged · 12/03/2021 20:54

@GravityFalls I could have written this post. I went this morning in the rain and barely managed 10 mins before stopping to walk.

Got to get back on it. I did a half marathon only 18 months ago but it's all gone to flabby shit.

TheVolturi · 12/03/2021 20:55

Definitely better than no run!
I run ever other day and some days, for no reason that I know of, it just feels hard. And others I feel like I could run forever. I can't run in the evening at all. Mid morning only for me!
Keep going op it will come.

Fairydustrust · 12/03/2021 20:57

Yes, that was fine. I am at the stage where putting my sports bra on counts as a workout Smile

thenightsky · 12/03/2021 21:04

Well done OP. That was your hard run of the week. I wish I could even get myself out these days.

Nowmum43 · 12/03/2021 21:07

I've been trying to run 3 times a week and an ok runner. Today was awful, against the wind, couldn't breath at some points and had to walk at points to keep myself up right against the wind. But it was a run. Well done you for going out and then next one will be easier 🙌🏼

GravityFalls · 12/03/2021 21:15

I don’t need Coach to 5k - I can run 5k usually! It’s just today I really really couldn’t. Why is the wind such a killer? I had to walk loads when usually I don’t have to. Oh well, I feel a (very slight) burn in the thighs so it must have done something!

GravityFalls · 12/03/2021 21:16

And @Fairydustrust, tell me about it - I swear thinking about putting my sports bra and Power Leggings on is enough to put me off going out at all!

BogRollBOGOF · 12/03/2021 21:56

I did the world's crappest 8 mi earlier this week in the pissing rain because that was better than the wind. To add insult to injury fucking miserable legs, it was actually 10 mi and my legs have been even more miserable since and very slow to forgive. But my masochistic brain loved it Confused

Crap runs happen for so many reasons or none at all, but other than prematurely aggravating an existing injury, a bad run is definitely better than not running.

ThursdayLastWeek · 12/03/2021 22:00

I sometimes find a day or two after a run like that, that I don’t feel very well. It’s only in hindsight that I think, 'oh, that’s why that run was hard!'

CaptainCarp · 12/03/2021 22:05

OP I only managed to do a 1.5mile WALK today... I have been aiming for 2-2.5miles during my lunch but I every step was effort today so I didn't tack the extra half on & plodded home. Took me almost as long to do that as my other walks have done this week.

But I got out had some fresh air & used some calories... Tomorrow is a new day!

Orangedaisy · 12/03/2021 22:13

I hate running in the wind too. Yesterday was particularly dreadful but today a bit better. Well done for getting out.

thenightsky · 12/03/2021 22:14

Why is the wind such a killer?

My old coach used to say - think of it as hill work.

TheVolturi · 13/03/2021 10:33

The wind is a killer!
I ran the other day in the wind (and rain) and the first half of the run was a slight incline, but the wind was behind me so not too bad. Coming back was slightly downhill, but the wind was facing me, it was horrible! Like when you're trying to run away in a dream and it feels like you're wading through custard 😂

yeOldeTrout · 13/03/2021 15:45

1.5 miles is great, OP. Don't knock yourself for that.

DialsMavis · 13/03/2021 15:51

I am always a crap runner, but I make myself anyway. I go with a friend as often as possible so I can't stop and walkGrin.

I agree with PP about getting that mythical good run, there is no rhyme or reason to it.

I would like to sign up to do a 10k but one day I might manage it (with a bit of training) and another I might be a coughing, spluttering wreck by 3k. Although 3k is usually where I find my stride and get into it.
