Spin bike

Ok lockdown and furlough is really really getting me down now and my mental health is taking a battering. I need to do something to occupy my time and spinning is something I used to absolutely love. I've always enjoyed cycling but since having my son 6 years ago I guess I gave alot up. I watched a spin class on YouTube the other night and within minutes it took me back to the day of taking part in the classes I really enjoyed.

Anyway space is my issue. As in I really do not have anywhere for any equipment to go unless it stays on show. My house is very small. Is there such a thing as a small spin bike? I cant afford an all singing and dancing model. But its an exercise I absolutely love and it i can find something small enough would definitely considering buying it.

Thanks in advance

You can get foldable ones OP - I’m looking for one too!

SpideyMom · 26/01/2021 13:33

Im looking at foldable too but they arent quite the same as spin bikes are they?

I need to do something. Everything is getting me down. Im even hating the fact my house is too small for me to be able to have a separate room to workout in

I'm also unhappy about my house being too small :( Houses were not built for lockdowns!
SpideyMom · 26/01/2021 13:42

Home used to be a comforting place. Now I just feel trapped. Deep down I love our home but with a growing child space becomes even more limited. Space that I've never really had anyway. But you are right they arent made for lockdown, especially small ones.
We get out walking but not often enough. My motivation is at zero to get us out the house as I just feel helpless and out of control

I have chionophobia (fear of snow) so it is impossible for me to go out at the moment Sad

SpideyMom · 26/01/2021 13:48

Oh im sorry to hear that. I dont fear it but we never venture out in the snow. My son dislikes is and so do I. We have had snow since the weekend so we haven't left the house either. Probably hasn't helped how I feel

I have hired a spin bike, it arrived in November and has been an absolute life saver for me. its not big and on monthly basis is cheaper than my gym membership was. I use the GCN videos and cookery on youtube, alternating them and do 45-60 minute sessions most days. I have mine by an opening window so I can get cool, or you could use a fan

I like the idea of sending it back for the summer months and then can always hire again next winter if needed

Happytentoes · 26/01/2021 13:54

I gave up and bought a spinner which now sits in the corner angled onwards the tv screen so I can do Les Mills. We got used to looking at it, and as we cannot have visitors, I don’t really care about it being out. It’s on matting to protect the floor but it’s fine.
Mine is a Spinner A3 and has no tech on it but it does the job.

This is what we need, another February heatwave to lift our spirits Grin

SpideyMom · 26/01/2021 13:59

I never knew you could hire them.

Yes thats true. Just got to find somewhere for it to go. I just want to feel like im moving and doing something

My advice is don't buy a cheap one. They're rubbish.

I bought a cheap on last year and ended barely using it as it felt unstable and dangerous.

Ive just bought a body max one which I use with the peloton app and it's bloody brilliant!!
It was £500 but still waaaaay cheaper than a peloton.

SpideyMom · 26/01/2021 14:07

I get that completely. I think my bigger worry is where to put it

SueEllenMishke · 26/01/2021 14:35

They're not too big but they're very heavy! That needs to be a consideration too. It wasn't fun dragging it down a flight of stairs!

PickledWilly · 26/01/2021 14:42

What is the body max one like? Are we talking very stable / on par with spin bikes at the gym? And does it need to be plugged in? I want a very heavy duty spin bike but have no power in our garage

It's brilliant. Really sturdy and just as good as any bike I've used in the gym. It doesn't need power and I watch classes on my iPad.

It's quite easy to build as well. I did it pretty much by myself in half an hour. Just needed DH to lift it up so I could put the feet on it - which are adjustable if you have an uneven floor.

I'd highly recommend!

Tambourinetunes · 28/01/2021 22:59

The Pelton app has 2 months free trail at the moment if you want to see how it works. They also have strength classes, yoga and stretching and walking/running outside classes to listen to. Be aware there are a lot of 6kg flywheel spin bikes for sale, that isn’t enough resistance in my opinion for a good workout. Read reviews and measure the bike in relation to the space it is going in - wish I had done that!

PickledWilly · 30/01/2021 12:14

Does the body max make noises? I was kind of hoping to find one with magnetic resistance

It's not silent but I don't think it's particularly noisy
Jedstre · 30/01/2021 21:13

@SueEllenMishke would you mind linking to the one you’ve got please? Did you research a few before getting the body max one?

SueEllenMishke · 30/01/2021 21:17

No worries https://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-b2-indoor-hr-cycle-black.php?gclid=CjwKCAiApNSABhAlEiwANuR9YANmDOIZTUDxCR7N7SlEHseeBhRew2kzqaYGPMwf1Rnzwlc9SaJsBoCL9cQAvDD_BwE

Yeah I did loads of research and this had amazing reviews and was much cheaper than the peloton or echelon.

Ive no complaints. It arrived within a week too.

SpideyMom · 01/02/2021 18:32

Im still looking but most of the affordable ones are out of stock. I also need to be realistic though. Our home is small. It's not cluttered but there really is no where for a spin bike to go, which would of course be the bike of choice if I went ahead with one. Im going to keep an eye out as its something I really enjoy and if one fits the bill I will have see what I can do.
For now I will just be YouTubing workouts and skipping. I absolutely love skipping lol

I think the folding ones tend to be just exercise bikes rather than spin bikes (so not sturdy enough to do the standing and moving around you do on a spin bike).

I bought a (2nd hand £150) home standard spin bike, but quickly realised it wasn’t going to cut the mustard. Wasn’t near enough to my usual spin experience to be enjoyable. So upgraded to a keiser m3 (still 2nd hand £500) - we have the newer models in my gym so I knew what I was getting and it’s been fantastic.

I have it in the lounge - not pretty but it is in a corner at least - takes up 65 x 130cm.

MrsMigginsPie · 01/02/2021 18:48

Just seen your last post saying you really don’t have space for a spin bike. if you have a road bike you could get a turbo trainer? The GCN online workouts are mostly for turbo training (but I use them on the spin bike too).

SpideyMom · 01/02/2021 21:59

I was actually thinking about those too. I dont have a road bike yet just because whilst my son still isn't confident on his it wouldn't get used (just me and him at home). When he is it was always the plan to invest in a bike for myself so I think a turbo trainer is definitely the way to go. Thank you
