Healthy people of mumsnet, how are you doing exercise during lockdown?

Hi, I'm tired of being tired and really want to get fitter. Usually I would head to the gym but thats not an option. I'm looking for ideas on how to get fit during lockdown, what do you do and what would be a typical week for you.

YesThisIsMe · 19/01/2021 15:01

Ring Fit on the Nintendo Switch, Jillian Michaels on DVD, Couch to 5K (the BBC app with Michael Johnson’s lovely voice).

sparechange · 19/01/2021 15:03

I run outside when it's not raining, and do a HIIT video inside when it is - Monday, Weds, Friday plus aim for one weekend day depending on family plans
DH and I do zoom pilates one evening a week, with a local teacher who we pay for a private class, rather than doing a streamed class - it's made a huge difference

And I aim to get around 8-10,000 steps per day, to force myself out of the house on the days when I would otherwise be at a laptop from 9-5, and then in the house for the rest of the time

Magicbabywaves · 19/01/2021 15:03

Couch to 5k once or twice a week.
Adrienne yoga most days. 20-30 mins.
Joe wicks a 3-4 times a week. I do his 15 minute fat burner or a 20 minute one.

PurpleDandelions · 19/01/2021 15:04

Make sure I get out the house every day. No excuses.
Log my activities on Strava with weekly and monthly targets to keep motivated.
Mixture of walking, couch to 5K and cycling depending on the weather and my mood.

Spudlet · 19/01/2021 15:04

Running three times a week.

I’m a member of the leisure centre and they’re starting a new thing where they do online classes for £10 a month. I’ve had my membership frozen since last year but I think I might reactivate it for this. Might be worth looking to see if any local gyms or leisure centres are doing anything similar?

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 19/01/2021 15:04

I've been doing C25K (Sarah Millican for me!) on an ancient treadmill in the garage. Also been actually wearing my futbit and trying to get my step count up.

Doingitaloneandproud · 19/01/2021 15:06

I've got weights at home and have a fitness plan adapted for the loss of heavier weights/machines. I've increased all rep amounts, I also have Peloton (not the bike or tread just app) and I like their classes to follow. I usually do a core and stretching daily from them.

Bathtime17 · 19/01/2021 15:08

This is exactly what I was looking for. Some great ideas. You all are amazing by the way!

I'm off to download the couch to 5k app.

I have a peloton bike and use that pretty religiously - I have had mine over 2 years now and it has not become a clothes horse. I have just got delivered a basic step from Amazon as well and am going to do step classes in my kitchen. I used to love step and they don't really do it anymore, but there is loads of content on youtube. I got the step for about £40 and it is like the reebok step ones. I am going to do my first class this afternoon and weirdly really looking forward to it.

lljkk · 19/01/2021 15:10

walks & runs & cycle commuting. DiY, gardening, housework. Mostly walks.

Respectabitch · 19/01/2021 15:12

Running. Home yoga through the Down Dog app. Exercise bike in the evening or while watching TV. I walk everywhere as well.

NewCatMummy · 19/01/2021 15:12

Les mills on demand and daily walks.

bigbluebus · 19/01/2021 15:17

Bought a spin bike last October and use free classes on You Tube - Kirsten Allen is my go to class at the moment.
Also bought some resistance bands. Lots of walking/hiking too - between 5 and 13 miles at a time. We are lucky to live in a rural area with lots of footpaths although I am a bit fed up of mud at the moment!
Also awaiting delivery of a rowing machine to add in a bit of variety and so that DH & I can both train at the same time.

JustCallMeGriffin · 19/01/2021 15:17

Thanks to starting C25K last lockdown I now run 3 times a week at 6am no matter the weather although snow will probably stop me if we ever get it

The rest of the week I'll walk for at least an hour each day at a decent pace and only drive if absolutely necessary (large food shop is pretty much the only reason at the moment).

I don't know if I'd call myself one of the healthy people of mumsnet but I'm certainly trying.

Labobo · 19/01/2021 15:20

I've joined a local bootcamp on Zoom. Once normal life restarts it will take place in our park but for now I'm quite glad there's no mud to contend with. Do that 4 times a week and go for an hour's walk in the woods a couple of times a week and an hour's walk round the streets a couple of times when I can't face the woodland mud which is almost a foot deep in places. Was doing zoom yoga too but the teacher gave up. Keep meaning to do yoga with Adriene but never remember.

Pippa234 · 19/01/2021 15:20

Running 5 times a week and just started up skipping it's great.

Allispretty · 19/01/2021 15:22

I've exercised at home for years so that's one element of lockdowns that hasn't bothered me thankfully! There's tons of free content on YouTube - Lilly Sabri is great and does regular guides so they keep you on track.

I'm doing Courtney black at the moment and subscribed to her app. I thought she'd annoy the shit out of me at first but I don't think I've found anyone else as motivational, plus I prefer weight based workouts to hiit etc and that's what she focuses on

CityDweller · 19/01/2021 15:22

For me, making part of a daily routine at a set time means I don't have to think about it, so I just do it. Likewise, knowing in advance what you're doing and having clothes ready, etc. Until Xmas I got up every week day before the rest of the family (about 6.15ish) and did 3 days of weight training and 2 days of running. I gradually accumulated some weights (a barbell, plates, etc) from March onwards. I already had some basic equipment like a few kettlebells. I follow an online programme for weight training that's about £20 a month by an American guy called Bret Contreras.

I was probably in the best shape of my life just before Xmas (I'm 45). Then I got ill after Xmas and then I put my back out, so I haven't exercised properly for nearly a month and I feel really fed up about it. Exercise is so key for me for mental and physical health and I thrive on routine. Can't wait to get back to it.

gamerchick · 19/01/2021 15:22

Weights in the house, our gyms gone online.

SimonJT · 19/01/2021 15:22

I’m a rugby player, so a lot of my training is centered around being rugby fit.

I either run at least 5k a day or cycle for a good 40 minutes.

I weight train most days, I do have weights, bench, pull up bar etc at home, I also do body weight exercises as well.

tatutata · 19/01/2021 15:23

Bought a rowing machine a few years ago, 20 mins on that most days. Did 30 mins (6.2k) and that was a mistake. I also do dumbbell workouts in front of the TV, running and Jane Fonda on amazon prime.

ScrapThatThen · 19/01/2021 15:23

Currently an over ambitious plan of two walks a day and Les Mills On demand workouts or running 6 days a week. Day 3 and I am shattered Wink

tatutata · 19/01/2021 15:26

@bigbluebus you getting a concept 2? We got the PM5 second hand but haven't actually hooked up the Bluetooth to any apps yet. Word of warning, if you have an old garmin then for some reason it loses your HR while you're working out. Keeps telling me my HR is 50 while I feel like I'm at about 160,which is incredibly demoralising!!

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 19/01/2021 15:28

Les mills on demand - six days a week mix of body pump weights, spin & step classes for cardio, sprint spinning for hiit and then body balance stretchy stuff. Just renewed for another year.
First years was £95 , now £130 without intro discount but so worth it .

Lots of classes that don't need equipment if you don't have a step/weighs/spin bike

I also try and get out for a walk each day and listen to podcasts/ audio books . Last year I managed over 1300 miles total but it was a slog. This year 100 miles a month is the aim

AdoraBell · 19/01/2021 15:29

Place marking for ideas, a frozen shoulder means I can’t do sooo many things🤦‍♀️ I’m trying to concentrate on the things I can do. That’s mostly Pilates.
