Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Is anyone else planning on heading out tomorrow? Week 5 run 2 for me. I start teaching at 8.30 and need someone to give my head a wobble and tell me that I CAN go running at 7am before my longest day of the week on Teams!!!

redcandlelight · 01/02/2021 15:14

7am is a brilliant time - less foot traffic to slalom around

Blobby10 · 01/02/2021 16:14

I go out at 5.15am! Truly, its brilliant - its dark and the street lights don't come on until 5.30am so no one can see me gallumping along and everyone is still asleep so don't register the earth tremors Grin

schoolcook · 01/02/2021 17:17

@Blobby10 that's me too if I can make it out of bed. I actually hate running in daylight Shock

emilyjeff · 01/02/2021 18:52

Please can I join you all? I'm not really new to running, have done c25k a few times before but I've lost all motivation at the moment and need a good kick up the arse! I was good in the summer lockdown got up to 10km! But dark mornings, cold weather and limited routes have really put me off. I reckon I can still do about 2 miles without stopping so thinking of starting at week 6. Planning my first run for weds

WhereAreWeNow · 01/02/2021 19:21

@Trulyatraditionalman I'll do it if you do. I'm at exactly the same point, trying to gear myself up to set the alarm early and go out in the rain at 7.15am to do w5 r2 before a long day of Teams meetings.
We can do it!

WhereAreWeNow · 01/02/2021 19:23

@FAQs look for compression leggings. Gap do good ones. They're thick, stretchy, and very tight so they really hold you in. Get high waist ones so they hold in your tummy too. And a good sports bra obviously.

Trulyatraditionalman · 01/02/2021 19:24

@WhereAreWeNow Let's do it! We can report back afterwards. Glad to hear I'm not alone! 😄👍

wizzler · 01/02/2021 20:23

W3R2 completed with the occasional slope thrown in for good measure. Didn't enjoy it much as it was so cold I couldn't seem to get a proper breath. Managed the slopes though it was definitely not pretty!

WhereAreWeNow · 02/02/2021 09:30

Did you do it @Trulyatraditionalman? I did. I really didn't think I'd manage 2 x 8 minute runs but it was surprisingly OK. Until I ran into a waterlogged field and got soaked in freezing water up to my ankles!

Trulyatraditionalman · 02/02/2021 09:34

@WhereAreWeNow Awesome. I did it too! Glad yours went well, soggy field though, eurgh. I found it surprisingly OK too! I got heckled by a group of men though which wasn't so pleasant. I glared at them and sailed straight past instead of getting upset. One of my greatest achievements to date!

Talksunderwater · 02/02/2021 09:40

Thanks @fellrunner85 for the tips on stride length. Makes sense. So, I’ve decided to work on speeding up.

I did 5km this morning but started off faster than usual to see how long I could last if pushed myself harder. The answer was 3km. I then had to walk for a bit and I ended up running/walking the last 2km (like the intervals in the C25k programme). It was hard work but I figure it shouldn’t take too long before I can run the whole 5km at the faster speed...well, I live in hope!

Lovely to see so many newbies starting out on the programme.

I'm supposed to be starting w5r1 today, but have felt a bit under the weather today.. I hope it is t the dreaded lurgy! I Don't think so , I just feel a bit sniffly, out of sorts and tired looking round the eyes. I'll see hiw i feel to.orrow and get back on it. What was w5r1 like? Is it much of a jump from w4? How long are the running sections?

I find anything tight on my legs make my legs feel heavy and tired!

WhereAreWeNow · 02/02/2021 11:52

@Trulyatraditionalman that's terrible Angry
One of the reasons I like running early is there aren't many people around so fewer people to dodge and less chance of seeing someone I know or being heckled by teenagers! Having said that, a man in a van did slow down and roll down his window to ask me why I wasn't running when I was on my warm down walk last week Hmm
Anyway, I hope it didn't put you off your stride.
@likeamillpond I definitely find tighter leggings better. I hate feeling jiggly. W5 is surprisingly OK so far. On paper it seems like a huge jump but in practice it feels quite doable. Having said that, I've got w5 r3 to look forward to next which involves 20 mins non stop running Shock

likeamillpond · 02/02/2021 13:36

I've never had a woman shout out 'Well done"" or "keep going" or anything negative.
Since I've started I've noticed it's always men that call things out.
As well as insulting us they seem to think we are in need of their attention and praise
In the meantime we just want to be Left Alone.
I Don't need approval!

I realise not all men are like it. Male runners are always civil and give a nod of the head and a smile as they run by.
It seems to be the lazy men in their big cars that feel the need to comment.

redcandlelight · 02/02/2021 14:00

I have a 'running friend' (I have no idea who she is) who I sometimes cross path with on my runs.
we smile at each other and give a thumbs up.
I'm not in the uk and have not yet come across men shouting or commenting. had loads of that when I was still living in london.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/02/2021 14:44

Yes, I’ve only had men shout things out. Normally fat old men walking dogs or driving a car. Thinking they are being terribly original.

I have had women in neon running gear sneering at me and feeling more professional and more experienced.

VioletCharlotte · 02/02/2021 20:06

I did day 1 of week 2 today. I'm a bit worried though as my hip is really sore now. I've never had hip pain before so I'm a bit worried I've jarred it with the running.

look up glutes exercises, like clams for the days between runs.
Inastatus · 02/02/2021 20:29

@WellJuhnelle - just checking in on you. How’s it going? I did first run of week 2 yesterday and it was ok except I am getting a bit of sciatica type pain down my right hip. I think I need to stretch more afterwards. Going again tomorrow.

Inastatus · 02/02/2021 20:32

@VioletCharlotte - yes, I’m getting a bit of hip/buttock/thigh pain too so I think I need to do some glute exercises as suggested by redcandlelight.

Cavagirl · 02/02/2021 20:36

I braved W8R1 today! I feel a bit like an actual runner now?!? A very slow runner, but a runner. But it was such an effort to go out, if it wasn't for this thread I just wouldn't have gone. I really enjoy it once I'm out there and I'm always so glad I've gone. I'll need another programme to keep me on the straight & narrow once I'm done with C25k!!! Zero self discipline!

schoolcook · 02/02/2021 20:54

@Cavagirl well done that's fab !
I felt the same at the end and to start with I ran 30 minutes three times a week, then pushed the extra few minutes so I covered 5 K and eventually started the C210K so that I don't quit Grin

VioletCharlotte · 02/02/2021 21:42

@redcandlelight thank you, I've just done a couple of sets of clam exercises and some bridges. I think my hips are tight and my flutes are weak from too much sitting at a desk!

I'm not sure if my trainers are helping either. I'm wearing a £30 Adidas pair I bought for the gym last year. Any recommendations for reasonably priced running trainers for a beginner? I want to do whatever I can to avoid injuring myself, I've got a few friends who have bad hips/ knees as a result of running.
