What's your resting heart rate?

ilovecardigans · 27/11/2020 00:00

I do a fair bit of exercise and have done for quite some time. I had no idea what my resting heart rate was until I bought a fitness tracker recently and was somewhat surprised to find that it was pretty low - 44 to 45 beats per minute. I'm in my mid 50s.

Apparently, I'm either an elite athlete (bahahaha!) or suffering from bradycardia (which is a bit scary) or I'm an elephant. I feel absolutely fine and my blood pressure is always bang on when it's checked by my GP. She has never commented on my heart rate, so I assume there's no cause for concern.

I'm interested to know what other posters' resting heart rates are and whether I'm an anomaly! TIA. 😁

This is quite useful

What's your resting heart rate?
ShowOfHands · 27/11/2020 21:43

Mine's around 50, sometimes lower but never lower than 48. Blood pressure is 90/60, dropped to 80/50 in pregnancy.

I'm fit for my age. DH's is 42 and sometimes lower but that's genetic. All the men in his family have low heart rates. I've had to reassure paramedics that he wasn't experiencing bradycardia when he was in an accident.

Redcrayons · 27/11/2020 21:46

My watch says 48 average for the week.

I exercise a lot, I’m not sure I’m quite as elite as my watch seems to think.

@EmpressPenguin

Same as yours or lower, I'm the same age as you. I've seen two theories on this A wrist monitors are not that accurate and B traditional measures of average heart rates are based on measures taken in clinical settings, whereas modern wearables reflect more accurately the wider range of variability of heart rates across the population while performing everyday activities. There's probably something in both of these views. Anyway, you're not an anomaly. I'm fit for my age but there are people who I would consider fitter who have resting heart rates higher than mine and some people who have rhrs even lower , but who dont seem considerably fitter. But on the whole, lower is better so be proud, you have a strong heart Grin
Interesting. We've had a few gadgets over the years and they've all been pretty consistent. We got an oximeter in the spring, and that comes up with the same number as my watch for the pulse.
trickyex · 28/11/2020 16:16

Are you a healthy weight OP?
My HR has only been in the 40s when I was anorexic and low BMI.
Am now normal weight and its around 55-60.
I think HR in the 40s is a concern, would get it checked out.

PolarBearStrength · 28/11/2020 16:23

Was just talking to DH about this. He was in a sleep study at uni and his HR was 30-35 😱😱 He had a big accident last year and his HR was 28 in the ambulance but he was in shock obviously. He does normally sit at 40 though. He’s hideously fit.

Jaxhog · 28/11/2020 16:27

Normal RHR is 60-100. It's often less if you are very fit, or if you have bradycardia. Although some people have a 'normal' rate outside of this. If yours is outside this range it's worth getting it checked.

My Fitbit says mine is 68, which is what I would expect. The lowest it goes is around 52 when I'm really relaxed.

DiesalFive · 28/11/2020 16:31

Between 38-42, I'm fairly fit but not an athlete by any means, and if I skip a meal or get up quickly I get very dizzy so I wonder if it needs to be a bit higher.

OrangeBananaFish · 28/11/2020 16:38

I've just taken my pulse and got 42. My watch said 44 at the same time as I finished.

My watch tells me my highest and lowest for the last 4 hours. When I looked this morning it said my lowest was 36. I've never seen it that low, but I don't look all the time.

Splodgetastic · 28/11/2020 16:40

Mine averages around 55, but it has dropped to 45 on occasion. I am early forties. If I drink alcohol it appears more normal. I have wondered whether I ought to see the GP about it.

Splodgetastic · 28/11/2020 16:44

I am no elite athlete. I should probably get it checked out, although I’ve always had low blood pressure and seen to take a while to come round from anaesthesia.

Splodgetastic · 28/11/2020 16:47

I did wonder whether the wearables aren’t that accurate though and someone upthread has suggested this too.

Kez0777 · 28/11/2020 16:48

Mine is between 40-52 depending if I've run that day.
I'm 43 with high cholesterol and run around 60 miles a month.
I had an ecg to check it as I was concerned as it seems so low and my high cholesterol is unexplained as I'm fit and eat well.
It's come back fine and I just have an athletic heart rate 🤣
I think lower is better than higher

yellowmaoampinball · 28/11/2020 16:54

Mine is around 55. I exercise a few times a week. When I stopped running for a spell it went up to about 65. My husbands is mid-40s. He's in his early 50s and runs a lot - he had it investigated a year or so ago but they found nothing wrong with his heart, just put it down to him being quite fit.

longcoffeebreak · 28/11/2020 18:15

Mine being 38 has caused a few medics to start looking panicky!! Grin
I was in A and E for another reason and all the alarms JEP going off. They also decided against giving me a general anesthesia because if it. I am sort of fit but when they ask that question I feel like it doesn't explain why it is quite so low Confused
How fit do you have to be to really push it down? I run 2-4 miles maybe 3-4 times a week and swim and cycle once each per week but no long distances etc

I'm 8 stone 12 and 5' 5" (body fat 28%), so definitely not underweight.

I have changed my HRT recently, so I wonder if that's got anything to do with it. I normally get my weight, BP etc. checked every 6 months by the GP, but obviously that hasn't happened this year. I'm due another prescription next month, so I'll mention it when I email the surgery.

I'm 35 and mines usually around 48, it's low from running. I can tell when I have a cold, am a bit run down etc as it goes up by 5-7bpm.

Skittlebug · 07/12/2020 17:33

@OverTheRainbow88 mine is around the same, when I was in labour it was 140 for the duration.

PurplePinapple · 07/12/2020 17:53

Mines usually around 120-140
I have tachycardia. Once at the gym it got to 201 Bpm.

Tyke2 · 09/12/2020 09:10

I'm 52 and my rate is about 48ish. Measured in a clinic , which is a bit lower than my Garmin says at 52 ish. But I run about 35 miles per week.
The doctor said if I was not as fit as I am the low rate would be a concern.

picklemewalnuts · 09/12/2020 09:19

@PurplePinapple mine's high, too. About 120.

Low blood pressure though, and GPs never been concerned.
