What's your resting heart rate?

ilovecardigans · 27/11/2020 00:00

I do a fair bit of exercise and have done for quite some time. I had no idea what my resting heart rate was until I bought a fitness tracker recently and was somewhat surprised to find that it was pretty low - 44 to 45 beats per minute. I'm in my mid 50s.

Apparently, I'm either an elite athlete (bahahaha!) or suffering from bradycardia (which is a bit scary) or I'm an elephant. I feel absolutely fine and my blood pressure is always bang on when it's checked by my GP. She has never commented on my heart rate, so I assume there's no cause for concern.

I'm interested to know what other posters' resting heart rates are and whether I'm an anomaly! TIA. 😁

Mines fluctuates with hormones! So at the beginning of my cycle it's around 57-58 and then mid cycle until I get my period (I'm assuming after ovulation) it's goes up to around 62-63. Then the day my period comes it goes back down to 57-58.
I'm pretty active and ages 31 xx

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/11/2020 20:19

Mine is 88!!!!

I only realised as tried to get fitter so
Wore my OHs Fitbit for a day to track stuff and it said my RHB is 88!!

Should I call my GP

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 27/11/2020 20:24

46 for me - age 41 , slightly overweight but I exercise 6 days a week.

A week off of exercise or on the booze (on holiday) will get it up to 60ish

I've had heart scans and ecg because gp was concerned due to family history but all fine. The only time it's been an issue is after general anaesthetic when it goes under 40 and that sets the alarms off

doctorhamster · 27/11/2020 20:26

64 according to my Fitbit. I don't think that's too bad considering I'm about 6 stone overweight. I'm pretty active though.

wintertime6 · 27/11/2020 20:28

Mine was about mid 70's. I stopped drinking alcohol about 10 days ago it has steadily decreased and today it's 59.

BecomeStronger · 27/11/2020 20:30

34, I'm 50. I don't know whether to be impressed with myself or scared it might stop!

Mandalalorianna · 27/11/2020 20:30
  1. Overweight, unfit, 50yo. Always had a low resting hr, that's a bit higher than usual. Usually about 50. BP slightly on the low side, extremely low when pregnant. Resp rate always low too. Once wasn't allowed to leave hospital after an op until I started breathing quicker 🤣
InTheLongGrass · 27/11/2020 20:34

@OverTheRainbow88 88 is a perfectly normal resting heart rate.
Adults typically have heart rates between 60 and 100 bmp.

AlternativePerspective · 27/11/2020 20:36

My heart rate is between 46 and 51, but I have a serious heart condition, am on ace inhibitors etc etc which mean that even when I exercise my heart rate is incapable of going above around 80 BPM, this means that the callory usage doesn’t update accurately either

My BP is around 89/65 which is normal for me and I don’t feel ill because of it.

However I do have an ICD and it paces at 40 BPM because if your heart drops below that it can drop very quickly (voice of experience of cardiac arrest.)

I do agree the wrist monitors aren’t incredibly accurate though, but if people have heart rates of below 40 I would definitely have them checked out.

PS: I do just pretend I’m an elite athlete 😂

AlternativePerspective · 27/11/2020 20:40

PS: if you want a more accurate heart rate, set a timer for fifteen seconds and take your pulse during that time, then multiply by 4.

iMatter · 27/11/2020 20:40

Mine is 51 - 54.

It's always been low.

No health problems.

I exercise a lot.

AlternativePerspective · 27/11/2020 20:42

@ BecomeStronger I would go and see a GP with a heart rate that low. That means your heart is only beating just over once every two seconds. That really shouldn’t be the case, and heart monitors in hospitals go off for below 40 and most people have pacemakers which pace at 40 for very good reasons.

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/11/2020 20:44

@InTheLongGrass

Thanks you! I had a google after I
Read all these!!

birchtree23 · 27/11/2020 20:49

I have a congenital heart problem and when I went for an ultrasound my heart ready was 42-44.
I am active so think that's what keeps it low.
I then had to have a heart monitor for 72 hours but haven't heard anything back so presume no news is good news.
Must be cool as a cucumber 😂 (NOT) as got a toddler to run after 🤦‍♀️

ZenNudist · 27/11/2020 20:51

My RHS is 55bpm. I'm 42 dont exercise as much as I'd like. Usually swim 3 times a week but because of lockdown just get out for 1 or 2 long walks a week and my diet is awful.

AlternativePerspective · 27/11/2020 20:51

Ok just did a comparison - did my own pulse check and heart rate was at 52 BPM, then looked at my heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch and BPM is currently 57 BPM.

Heart rates on the monitors are generally slightly higher than actual heart rates...

Before being pregnant my heart rate ranged between 45-50. Now I'm pregnant it's around 60!

LubaLuca · 27/11/2020 21:25

The average here is remarkably low, isn't it?! I'm a definite outlier at 70 Blush

LindaEllen · 27/11/2020 21:26

Mine's 63, which I'm happy with.

I think fitter people are more likely to use fitness trackers, so it's only an average of those who are likely to have lower RHR in the first place. So don't worry about it :).
LubaLuca · 27/11/2020 21:31

Good point, I only know mine from having it checked periodically by medics. They've never thought it worth commenting on, so presumably I'm not on the brink of heart failure Grin

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 27/11/2020 21:31

Mine's about 70-75.

HamishDent · 27/11/2020 21:33

Mine is around 50 when sitting, less on waking. I run around 20k per week (not fast) and weights a couple of days. I’m a few pounds overweight also.

pinkearedcow · 27/11/2020 21:35

Mine is about 62, which seems normal
