Winter Running

I was just wondering if anyone had tried this jacket from decathlon www.decathlon.co.uk/p/run-warm-night-women-s-jacket-black/_/R-p-307360
and could tell me how warm it is??
This will be my first winter running where I will have less flexibility with times so will be going in the darker/colder parts of the day. I managed from January until the warmer weather in just leggings and a long sleeved (although quite thick) top but I was only going during the day. I'm generally a cold person, but I get quite hot once I'm running so I find it really difficult to judge my layers at the best of times! Yesterday, on a 'easy run' during the day was the coldest I've felt so far, although it was okay once I'd been going 10mins or so. I don't want to buy lots of unnecessary kit, but I also want to keep up going regularly so can't decide what to buy! Thanks

I saw so many 'new' runners in the hot lockdown weather in April and May running in full length joggers and hoodies

Yes! Full winter gear on anything warmer than minus 10 is a sure sign of a new runner*. See also arm straps for phones, and carrying a water bottle in your hand.

Not meaning fo be at all snarky - I did exactly the same! - it just takes a while to get to the stage where you're running hard and long enough to realise those things are very uncomfortable.

Like most others on this thread, I'm a vest and shorts runner, even in winter. I'll add gloves when it's very cold, and a light long-sleeved base layer if I'm going to be out for a long time/going up on the fells/it's freezing. Inov8 are my favourite (only in the sale mind), or Ronhill.

*other exceptions to the "wrapped up" rule include:

  1. ultra runners. You'd be nuts to do the Bob Graham without full kit. And if you did, you may end up dead
  2. proper runners wanting to send a sign they're "not racing today." If you usually run a 20 min parkrun, for example, but want your competitors to know you're taking it as a training run, it is acceptable to put on tracky bottoms and a jacket and jog round in 25 mins Grin

Agreed, I always get hot whilst running. It's been ok so far this year even tho we have had frosts first thing. I'm happy to just Chuck a long sleeve top layer on that I can tie round my waist when I start over heating. It does amaze me when I see people running in full on Wooly bobble Hats. I'm
In a part of the uk that is never extreme temps

Yes to shorts, t.shirt and GLOVES!!
It's a good look. As I've got older I get what some call a touch of Raynaud's but it's only after I've stopped after a cold run. Corpse fingers I call it.
Maybe I need a merino base layer AND better gloves.

Thanks for all the tips! It seems fairly unanimous! I'm in the north west England so wet and windy, can be cold but not the coldest. Think I'll try and see how I go with just layering what I have and getting gloves. I don't like things tied around my waist if I can help it. I'm definitely that person who always seems to pick the wrong kit - I just don't seem to believe I'll be as hot as I will. And it did take me until well into the heatwave to cave and put shorts on (I hate shorts and didn't want to be seen out in them!) but I can't see me doing that again....how I didn't get heat stroke is anyone's guess!

My top from decathlon arrived , I haven't worn it yet as it's quite mild where I am today for running it's for a cold day definitely.

SayrraT · 20/12/2020 09:18

I find this quite interesting as I'm a cold person (even though I've got at least 3 stone of extra padding) and there is no way I'd be comfortable running in as little as some people do.

I ran 5km (in 32 mins) the other day and had thermal leggings and decathlon winter leggings on the bottom half and a vest, long sleeved top, short sleeved t-shirt and light zipper hoodie on the top plus hat and gloves! I wear a running jacket if it's raining instead of the hoodie.

I think if you feel fine in lots of clothes then just go for it!

I'd like to know if anyone can recommend properly thick warm running tights? Yesterday I ran in my fleece lined waterproof riding tights but I'd like something similar for running.

pinkbalconyrailing · 20/12/2020 09:23

I wear just a t-shirt down to 15 degree, a fleece (which looks a lot like the jacket you linked) over it below 15.
below 5 I don't run outside.

pinkbalconyrailing · 20/12/2020 09:29

the great thing about the jacket is that you can open the zip if you get too hot.

PatchworkElmer · 20/12/2020 09:36

@SayrraT, Sturdy Bu Design do winter leggings which have a thin layer of fleece inside.

I've run in all weathers for more than 10 years and I've never owned a running jacket.

I wear a double layer of ordinary running tops and in the very coldest weather (maybe 5 days a year) a fleece jumper.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/12/2020 10:07

I am a bit nesh and I can't go out if I don't start off warm in the winter, but I strip off as I go.

On coldest days, I wear full length running bottoms, a long sleeved top with thumb loops, jacket, gloves, and chute/headband thing or a hat.

As I warm up I take off my gloves, maybe the hat, and probably zip off the sleeves of my jacket and maybe unzip it a bit. The zip off sleeves are the best bit and there's a deep zipped pocket in the back of my jacket to put them in. I like having All The Pockets, which is another plus point for jackets, though I have got a flip belt for my phone when I go out without it.

Oh and I've been running on and off about 25 years and I always carry a water bottle, but one with a handle. I hate the thought of being miles from home and uncomfortable.

SayrraT · 20/12/2020 10:10

Thanks patchworkelmer I'll have a look, just find it hard to judge the thickness when we have to buy online! I'm terrible at returning stuff!
