Winter Running

I was just wondering if anyone had tried this jacket from decathlon www.decathlon.co.uk/p/run-warm-night-women-s-jacket-black/_/R-p-307360
and could tell me how warm it is??
This will be my first winter running where I will have less flexibility with times so will be going in the darker/colder parts of the day. I managed from January until the warmer weather in just leggings and a long sleeved (although quite thick) top but I was only going during the day. I'm generally a cold person, but I get quite hot once I'm running so I find it really difficult to judge my layers at the best of times! Yesterday, on a 'easy run' during the day was the coldest I've felt so far, although it was okay once I'd been going 10mins or so. I don't want to buy lots of unnecessary kit, but I also want to keep up going regularly so can't decide what to buy! Thanks

I find winter running jackets far too warm, so I stick to one or two close fitting layers on the body, plus hat, gloves and face/neck buff, absolutely essential. It's your extremities that get cold, not your body, I find. I would only wear a jacket about once a year, but I'm usually running in in the city, so its not that cold.

TheOrigRights · 08/11/2020 10:10

My tip is to make sure you are warm before you leave the house, and wear layers that can be tied around your middle.
A hat, gloves and neck buff go a long way to keeping you warm and can easily be removed (and stuffed down your top/bottoms).

AuntieStella · 08/11/2020 10:19

I don't know that jacket, so can't help on the specifics

I have a jacket to wear when it is rainy or very windy. But otherwise I find that if my hands and ears are warm, then I'm OK. I like separate sleeves too.

I'm usually running where it's not too cold though (non extreme part of England). If in more challenging place, then I think a jacket is a really good idea. You can tie it round your waist if you get too hot, but it's there is you need to slow down and want to avoid chill at that point.

sarahc336 · 08/11/2020 10:20

Personally I'd only wear a jacket for rain purposes and I'd keep this lightweight and breathable, once you start running jackets are generally too hot.
In the winter I tend to wear gloves and sone kind of ear protection, I wear one of those stretchy neck bands as a head band and pull over my ears as your extremities will get cold and I wear full length trousers and a slightly thicker full arm top. This seems to work well, otherwise wearing anything else after 5 mins you'll just be too hot. Also I'd invest in sone good lights to wear on your arms or trainers so cars can see you. X

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 08/11/2020 13:35

Thanks everyone! The general consensus seems to be brave it and I'll be fine, and after another sweltering run this morning, I think you're probably right! Gloves and lights added to my list! I've got a headband thingy to keep my ears warm. I'll see how I go!

It's really warm here today (Essex/Suffolk border). Short and t.shirt weather!

MarshaBradyo · 08/11/2020 15:14

I don’t know about jackets but I’m still in shorts and tshirt

It’s very mild but also I get really hot and rarely wear much more than above even when 4 degrees (favourite temp)

Delatron · 08/11/2020 17:55

I just don’t get on with running jackets. I feel a bit ‘boil in the bag’. I always get too hot.

If it’s cold I wear a thermal layer and gloves but if it rains I just get wet. Still in a vest today!

emummy · 08/11/2020 18:16

I like a gilet and arm warmers in the winter, but more flexible.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 08/11/2020 19:29

So basically I just need to toughen up and brave it??😂 I suppose it might make me run faster to warm up, and I do get really hot really easily, but only when running - I'm normally feeling the cold and wearing 3 jumpers so it's kinda hard to switch that part of my brain off!

christinarossetti19 · 08/11/2020 19:34

I'm also a 'cold' person who gets hot when running, especially now that I'm close to menopause.

I agree with people who say it's about keeping your extremities warm - wrist warmers, gloves, hat etc rather than your core.

It does depend on how long you run for and how fast (for you). If you're planning to do long, slow runs double layers eg base layer then running top might be good.

EmpressPenguin · 08/11/2020 19:38

Agree you need to warm up first - even then you'll probably be a bit cold at the start but ten minutes in, it's a different story. I personally don't like running with jackets flapping round my waist, I'd rather go out semi-warm. I read somewhere that you need to add 10 degrees to the weather forecast (celsius) when planning what to wear, and I've found that to be a good guideline, but I'm only in the north of England, not the Arctic

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 08/11/2020 19:42

My DH runs in super cold weather (we’re in Canada). He really likes Craft clothing and runs in a pair of their x-country skiing pants during the winter. They make running tights as well craftsportswear.co.uk/collections/running/products/advance-essence-warm-tights-women

Delatron · 08/11/2020 19:43

Yes I read that too about dressing for +10 degrees than it actually is. It works well. So today it was about 12 degrees. I went out with a vest and long sleeved t-shirt over it but had ditched that after the first mile.

See how you go though. Everyone is different. I see people running in tracksuits when I’m in a vest and shorts!

letsgoroundagainbaby · 08/11/2020 19:43

Like others I only wear a jacket for rain.

I like a layer that I can take off and tie round my waste. Last time I was in decathlon I was looking for a bright yellow high vis long sleeved top to wear running.

The only things they had in the woman's section were £££ for some reason.

I figured I look like crap when I run anyway so bought a (small) men's long sleeve high vis for less than a tenner.

It's brilliant because the arms are much longer than on the women's stuff I have so it's really easy to pull off and tie round my waist without stopping when I (inevitably) get too hot.

I saw so many 'new' runners in the hot lockdown weather in April and May running in full length joggers and hoodies.

I just wanted to shout at them firstly well done! And secondly running isn't anywhere near as hard as those clothes will be making them think it is!

letsgoroundagainbaby · 08/11/2020 19:47

This is the one I got

www.decathlon.co.uk/p/run-warm-men-s-long-sleeved-running-t-shirt/_/R-p-145903

islockdownoveryet · 08/11/2020 19:53

Well I'll tell you when mine arrives .
I ordered this week I'm hoping it arrives tomorrow as got a text to say dispatched .
I tend to wear layers though in case I get warm so vest / t shirt with a running jacket over top and if I get warm I take it off and tie round my waist .
I've a couple of long sleeve running tops but thought I'd get a new jacket .

Delatron · 08/11/2020 20:27

Ha yes @letsgoroundagainbaby this was in the hot lockdown weather!

megletthesecond · 08/11/2020 21:50

I'm a cold person too but don't need a running jacket in the winter. Gloves, hat and necker do the job. I have a long sleeved base layer and stick a running t-shirt over it. Longer socks are nice too, so I don't get chilly ankles.

In fact I remember new years day parkrun and it was quite chilly. For some daft reason I'd forgotten my hat and gloves and only had a zip up and I was bitterly cold. Extremities are the vital parts.

emmathedilemma · 09/11/2020 10:06

I've got the leggings that go with that jacket and they are warm!!

EspressoX10 · 09/11/2020 10:09

I run in a very cold part of Scotland and rarely (if ever) wear a jacket.

I wear lovely base layers and long sleeve tops, gloves, hats and really lovely fleecy lined leggings. When it's absolutely freezing, the best this is a light but super warm merino top.

TheOrigRights · 09/11/2020 11:20

I have nothing merino, but I really want one.
Maybe it can be my lockdown treat. I deserve that, right?

ChasedByFox · 09/11/2020 12:08

I run in a Merino top- when it's about 6°.
It's just an ordinary mountain warehouse baselayer, with a quarter length zip, but it keeps me warm when cold, and lets me cool when I get warm. Just that over my bra.

Washes/dries easily, doesn't get smelly.

ScrapThatThen · 09/11/2020 12:40

I like a long sleeve top and a gilet. Add hat and gloves as necessary. But I don't get that hot the speed I go.
