Peloton - is it worth it?

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 13:31

Keep finding myself in the peloton page as now getting lots of targeted ads! As my gym has reduced capacity on spinning classes and the equipment is quite dated, I’m increasingly interested in peloton.

Can any users tell me about their experience - is it worth the money and does the novelty wear off?

lookatmememe · 06/09/2020 13:34

Nope .

lookatmememe · 06/09/2020 13:35

Sorry sneezed ! Waste if money when you can buy a spin bike a do free classes via you tube .

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/09/2020 13:40

I have had my peloton for about 4 weeks. I’m loving it so far.

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 13:41

Lol @ sneeze interruption!! Bless you!

I am a bit of a geek and get motivated by seeing my stats at the gym classes (and frustrated when the old equipment doesn’t work) - rpm, watts, distance, cals etc.

Plus the competition element - these are the things I think peloton will have vs a standalone spin bike

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/09/2020 13:43

Well there are tons of statistics that’s for sure. I’m still too new to it to know what they all do yet.

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 13:47

@ThroughThickAndThin01 how often are you using it? And have you used any of the other (non cycling) classes on the app?

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/09/2020 13:53

I am totally new to any sort of cycling so just do the beginners classes (20 mins, recorded) right now. I think I’ll move on to advanced beginners next week.

I’m using it 4 times a week and that’s the frequency I mean to use it going forward. Apparently the yoga classes are really good but I’m yet to explore that aspect.

andadietcoke · 06/09/2020 14:03

I love mine, I've had it for a year and aM obsessed. I've never stuck to any kind of exercise before and was really clear from the outset that if I didn't do it I'd return it within the trial period. Hadn't done any kind of spin class before so it was a complete gamble.

It's a bit of a minefield in terms of what you need. Happy to answer any questions and if you decide to buy I have a referral code that gets you £100 off accessories bought with the bike.

123sunshine · 06/09/2020 14:06

I got one back in February. It is a great bit of kit and the classes are great lots of different instructors to suit your preferences. However I haven’t used mine now for the last 6 weeks, I need to get remotivated! My husband and teenage daughter also use the bike and enjoy it. If you can afford it and will use it then the answer is yes it is worth it.

nicknamehelp · 06/09/2020 14:10

love mine when I get the chance to use it. Kids (older teens use it) and dh. love that there are lots of different classes. Yes not cheap but split between 4 of us cheaper than gym memberships.

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 15:34

Ooh thanks re the referral code, I’ll PM you if I’m getting close......

We are contracted to health club memberships at the moment (which don’t come cheap either). However, I’ve struggled with depression and although I’m improving, sometimes the thought of getting out to the club is too much. Plus I’m often not able to get onto the classes I want (but when I’ve managed to get onto spinning I’ve loved it and can feel the difference it’s making)

Erring towards yes.....

Those with a bike - how long was the delivery period?

I don't have one, but DH is a triathlete and says they're very over hyped. He has a turbo trainer that he can mount his own bike to and used Zwift, which he has a monthly membership for. Think the trainer was around £1200, so not cheap, but there are apparently lots of cheaper options available l.

My friend ordered recently and it was about 10 days I think. We were about that this time last year so I'd say back to normal.

I have to say that it's helped most with my mental health, especially during lockdown. It's a heady mix of data so you can results, plus community (the uk ladies peloton group on fb is brilliant) and the ease of working out from home. It really feels like you're with other people and weirdly I feel accountability - no one would know if you didn't ride in the ranges or didn't finish the ride, but that doesn't seem to matter. I literally have zero excuses not to do 20 mins at some point in the day and always feel better for it. There's something for everyone too. DH often does the scenic rides, 60s, or 90s rock. I LOVE an instructor called Christine D'Ercole, and then the cheesy pop of Cody Rigsby. There are four UK instructors too. Oh god, I sound like I'm in a cult so will stop, but it really has been life changing.

Ineedflour · 06/09/2020 19:07

I love mine. Had it a week and am using it every day (am v v unfit). Also do the walk classes and will gradually try the yoga, stretches and meditation. If I ever get fit enough to run, I'll try those too.

It's expensive but will be worth its weight in gold if it continues to build my family's fitness motivation.

Batshittery · 06/09/2020 19:13

There are cheaper options but they don't compare to the Peloton. I love mine. I got it mid May and have ridden everyday just about. I have also done some of the yoga and strength classes off the bike. There is something for everyone and the community is great.
Th best bit for me is that I can hop on whenever I like. No need to do my hair first, or get properly dressed. DH wasn't interested when I ordered it, but he also uses it regularly.

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 20:51

The b@stards at Klarna who provide the financing declined me!!! Wtf??! We did take out new car finance recently so I’m wondering if my credit file has been impacted.

So now looking like an outright purchase if I go ahead, which is doable, just needs a bit more consideration.

You can buy a normal spin bike and use the peloton app for £12 a month. You don't need the branded peloton bike however you won't get all the stats u get with the bike.

EmmaStone · 07/09/2020 00:27

We've got a spinning bike, and during lockdown my insurance provided 120 days of the Peloton app for free, and I've really enjoyed it. I've not done any live lessons, as a I like to choose when to work out, and then choose instructor or type of workout etc. I'm a big fan of Leanne, who is a UK instructor (the one from the Peloton advert), and am trying out a few others. It's good fun, a good workout. I've done some strength, which I've found harder than the cycling, and some running which was good. Not tempted by the bike, although am considering keeping the app subscription on (£12.99 a month I think).

Lumene · 07/09/2020 00:39

Love mine! Have had it a month and been on it nearly every day. I can’t think of any other exercise I’ve done this frequently. Plus I feel amazing afterwards and can always squeeze in a 15 min ride even on busy days.

Ramblingwords · 13/09/2020 17:54

I got one in July.

I absolutely love it.

Yes, there are convoluted set ups you can create with different apps and bikes that will be cheaper, but with peloton you have something which is actually all inclusive, oven ready (sorry Boris) and just...slick.

It is probably one of my most expensive purchases ever; I don’t really do handbags or expensive clothing/beauty. But you really feel it; it feels like a sturdy well made bike. If you’ve ever used a rickety spin bike at the gym you’ll know that you are on a different level bike.

I like the app, the training program, the ability to personalise your training with the power zone program, the range of classes and music genres, and the community who you can connect with through Facebook (and arrange to meet on rides).

The new bike comes with a much larger screen, better speakers, and the screen swivels around so you can do non bike workouts through the app away from the bike. It’s a really good alternative to gym membership.

If anyone does decide to get one, come find UK Ladies Peloton on Facebook. Or come along before getting one to hear more about it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/09/2020 17:55

Yes!! Saved our sanity during lockdown and I knowing we’ve got it in winter in case another lockdown is reassuring.

Aspergallus · 13/09/2020 17:57

Referral code for £100 off: MGJJ63

But if you are NHS/Emergency services and have a Blue Light Card there might be better offers. Word of warning, when I bought mine the NHS discount code didn’t work -use the chat function on the website and they will sort it out. I think we got a free accessories pack at that time.

Lumene · 13/09/2020 18:14

Still using mine, have started power zone training now.

nbee84 · 13/09/2020 18:20

@Ramblingwords You mentioned the speakers, but I like my music loud - others in my house not so much Grin Can you connect Bluetooth headphones as well?

PaddyF0dder · 13/09/2020 18:23

Hope so.

Just ordered one. Getting delivered in 3 weeks...
