Peloton - is it worth it?

Youngatheart00 · 06/09/2020 13:31

Keep finding myself in the peloton page as now getting lots of targeted ads! As my gym has reduced capacity on spinning classes and the equipment is quite dated, I’m increasingly interested in peloton.

Can any users tell me about their experience - is it worth the money and does the novelty wear off?

From what I can tell the minimum package for a bike is £1,750 and then you pay for classes on top. You could buy both a half decent road bike and a mountain bike for the amount Peloton will cost. Unless I lived deep inside a city I would stick to real bikes.

Batshittery · 13/09/2020 19:12

@nbee84 yes you can connect bluetooth headphones. I use Powerbeats Pro with mine

Ramblingwords · 13/09/2020 21:31

@Dawnlassie
I have a mountain bike too and ride outdoors regularly. It really isn’t the same. Instructors and classes, metrics to monitor and strive toward, training programs etc and a full range of strength, yoga, meditation and bootcamp classes too...I can get on it when the kids are in bed in the morning or night without childcare concerns. Straight in the shower before work.

@nbee84
I always use headphones...with those on the bike is damn near silent, which means I don’t wake anyone up in the morning. People who have the new bike tell me the new speakers are loud and have that surround, immersive class experience...I’m not too bothered as I’d always use in-ear headphones.

This is true. For me I don’t have the chance/time to go cycling outdoors, but have been on the Peloton most days. I do live deep inside a city though so that might explain it Grin

We were so grateful for ours during lockdown. I use the yoga as much as the cycling, and I love that I can do it whenever I want and I can choose the length/type of classes. We remain members of our local swimming pool but I can't see us going to a gym for any other reason again.

YES

JetBlackSteed · 13/09/2020 22:08

You could get a real road bike and a turbo trainer and use Zwift, instead.
Maybe a consideration for you?

£1750, not including classes! That’s a truckload of money.

Duvetdweller · 13/09/2020 22:24

I am utterly obsessed with mine - So much more than just a spin bike, literally the best money I’ve ever spent

Lumene · 15/09/2020 12:59

Yes it is. I am sharing mine with another house mate, so it works out at about £50 a month over 3 years, including the subscription, for each of us.

I’ve already used it far more than any gym membership. If I keep it up, it’s worth it. If not it won’t be!

PlugUgly1980 · 16/09/2020 09:46

It's been mentioned a couple of times, but a road bike on a smart turbo trainer linked to Zwift is also an option...rides, training sessions, etc. absolutely love it...but generally for all the same reasons as above, in that I can ride everyday at home, without any childcare issues and can do as much as or little as I want to. Using the training sessions on Zwift has definitely given me a focus rathe than just peddling for an hour.

Have finally caved in and ordered. I’d deliberated for quite some time but I fear gyms could end up closing again during the winter and the ready made set up and classes offered by Peloton swayed it over the turbo / app suggestions.

I have a 9 week wait time though - pissed off as it said 3-5 weeks was typical and then AFTER I paid It offered me dates toward the end of November. Very cheeky.

Does anyone know how I get access to the app in the meantime?

@Youngatheart00

I’m awaiting delivery too. Getting mine in 2 weeks.

Yes, you can use the app from as soon as you place your order. They should send you a login. The app is excellent. We’re been using the strength workouts and the outdoor runs.

Batshittery · 22/09/2020 17:52

@Youngatheart00 You can download it from the App Store onto your phone. I think you get a 30 free trial. Also, I have seen others who were given a long wait time, but rang up and managed to get an earlier delivery. I don't think you'll regret your purchase. I love mine and do more exercise now than I have done for years.

Youngatheart00 · 22/09/2020 18:22

Thanks - going to download it and take the free trial and then contact them and see if they’ll extend it - having paid them £2600 I certainly don’t expect to have to pay for an app while I wait for them to deliver what I’ve paid for!

OP posts:
Ramblingwords · 22/09/2020 19:40

We were told 9 weeks but actually got it in 4, so fingers crossed @Youngatheart00

Youngatheart00 · 22/09/2020 20:03

Oh really @Ramblingwords that’s positive - had you actually booked a delivery date and they got in touch to offer sooner?

OP posts:
Ramblingwords · 22/09/2020 20:18

We had a provisional date via email immediately after the purchase, then out of the blue another email saying it was arriving that week. Getting it early seems common, from reading the UK Ladies Peloton fb page...

But definitely get on the app meantime! I tried out some Barre today. Ouch.

icedancerlenny · 22/09/2020 20:21

Turbo trainer and Zwift is a better option as you can then take your bike out on the road. Wouldn’t get peloton.

ouch321 · 22/09/2020 20:30

I ordered it the weekend just gone, and delivery is scheduled this coming Monday.

But I'm in London which may make the wait time lower and I opted for the original bike as I'm not fussed about being able to turn the screen round and the new bike they dropped the price by a few hundred pounds and also I didn't want to wait 5 weeks and I figured with new lockdown possibly being announced I thought I'd best get it here as soon as possible.

Youngatheart00 · 22/09/2020 20:47

I’m in London too - one of the reasons I don’t want a road bike as I wouldn’t feel safe on the roads.

OP posts:
PaddyF0dder · 22/09/2020 20:51

@icedancerlenny

To each their own.

Road bike and turbo trainer would take up a lot of space. Peloton is smaller.

Either is an excellent workout.
